Canada preparing retaliatory tariffs to unveil as soon as Trump’s inauguration day

The Trudeau government is planning a first round of counter-tariffs that could be unveiled as soon as incoming U.S. president Donald Trump is sworn in on Monday, Radio-Canada has confirmed.

The counter-tariffs would apply to $37 billion in goods that would be less harmful to the Canadian economy.

Trump has threatened to levy a 25 per cent across-the-board tariff on Canadian goods. Experts and lawmakers have warned such a move would be devastating for the Canadian economy.

The Canadian government is also preparing additional retaliatory tariffs that would cover up to $110 billion, depending on the Trump administration’s actions. Those could potentially be more damaging to the Canadian economy.

Food for thought … Good thread

Opinion: The Liberals may never recover from Justin Trudeau

After the 2011 debacle under Ignatieff, the Liberals abandoned rebuilding a party in disarray for the easy path: Trudeau’s shallow appeal.

The Liberal Party of Canada’s decision to rebuild itself after its historic defeat in the 2011 election by relying on Justin Trudeau was a serious miscalculation. Rather than undertaking the hard work of political renewal – addressing voter apathy, reconnecting with its grassroots, and modernizing its infrastructure – the party chose a shortcut. Banking on Trudeau’s charisma, family name, and media appeal, the Liberals prioritized short-term electoral gains over rebuilding a party in disarray.

While this approach delivered a temporary victory, it left the party vulnerable, with growing questions about its long-term viability as a political force.

Air Force veteran saw alien, ‘nonhuman’ egg-shaped aircraft while working for secret UFO retrieval program: report

A US Air Force veteran claims he witnessed an alien and “nonhuman” egg-shaped aircraft while working for a secret government UFO retrieval program — a jaw-dropping claim that’s reportedly backed up by video footage and testimony from three other vets.

Jake Barber was contracted by the military branch to work as a helicopter pilot flying to the sites of downed UFOs, he said in an interview with NewsNation.

During his assignments, some of the aircraft he spotted were “top secret” and explainable — while others were of “alien” origin, the outlet reported.

Can Trump Make America Safe Again?

Upon being nominated in 2021 to head Joe Biden’s Justice Department, Merrick Garland announced that the DOJ’s top priorities would be “ensuring racial equity” and “meeting the evolving threat of violent extremism.”

The U.S. had just lived through race riots, mass looting, and the largest annual homicide increase in the country’s history. Americans were getting robbed at gunpoint while eating in restaurants; thieves were smashing trucks and SUVs into storefronts to make off with merchandise, cash registers, and ATMs.

It Wasn’t a Deal – It Was a Crime

The decision by the Israeli government to make significant concessions to the Hamas kidnappers should never be called a “deal.” It was an extortion. Would you call it a deal if somebody kidnapped your child and you “agreed” to pay ransom to get her back? Of course not. The kidnapping was a crime. And the extortionate demand was an additional crime.

So the proper description of what occurred is that Israel, pressured by the United States, capitulated to the unlawful and extortionate demands of Hamas as the only way of saving the lives of kidnapped babies, mothers and other innocent, mostly civilian, hostages.

Terence Corcoran: Get ready Canada for ‘Justin Carney’

While he claims to be a Liberal ‘outsider,’ Mark Carney has been a backer of Justin Trudeau’s policies

Mark Carney has been on the Canadian political leadership radar for more than a decade, bleeping away well before Justin Trudeau’s Liberals were elected in 2015. He continued to feed his political ambitions over the years, including his time as a central banker hectoring corporations for hoarding “dead money.” Then he moved on to his guiding ideological theme, which is that if humans are allowed to pursue their own interests in a free-market economy, they will destroy life on Earth.

She immigrated to Canada nearly five years ago with a master’s degree. Why can’t she find full-time work?

Nearly five years after moving to Canada, Mani Bhandari still hasn’t secured a full-time job.

Despite holding a master’s degree in business management from India, Bhandari isn’t hearing back from the countless employers to whom she’s applied for work — both within her field and outside of it.

Maybe the Star should ask themselves why she is here in the first place and why she should take precedence over native born Canadians?

Moss Landing California fire: One of the world’s largest lithium battery factories ablaze

More than 1,000 people are being evacuated after a blaze broke out in one of the largest battery storage facilities in the world on Thursday night prompting a full scale mobilization of firefighters across several counties in Northern California, according to local authorities.

Towering flames were visible from afar as a large black column of smoke rose from the Moss Landing power plant, with the fire showing no signs of easing in the early hours of Friday. It was first reported around 3pm local time.

The fire is located in the northern part of the sate some 300 miles (500 km) north of the wildfires in Los Angeles. The plant contains tens of thousands of lithium batteries, which can be extremely difficult to put out if they go up in flames.

‘Ridiculous’: Legal fight over Ontario town’s refusal to mark Pride month ongoing

When Douglas Judson asked the Township of Emo to declare June as Pride month and display a rainbow flag for a week in 2020, he never imagined the request would turn into a years-long legal dispute that still has no end in sight.

“This is generally a non-controversial thing to ask for,” said Judson, the co-chair of Borderland Pride. “There’s often flag raisings that are done, proclamations are made for various dates or other causes in the community.”
