Trudeau announces new measures to deal with housing, grocery prices

Faced with increasing pressure to respond to widespread concerns about the cost of living and questions about his leadership, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a series of new measures Thursday meant to deal with rising housing and grocery prices.

Trudeau’s announcement came at the conclusion of a Liberal caucus meeting in London, Ont. that included what one minister called a “robust” discussion of the government’s challenges and sagging political fortunes.

Poilievre releases housing plan he says would ‘build homes, not bureaucracy’

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre released Thursday a housing plan he said would fast-track the construction of new homes in Canada as the country grapples with an acute shortage of affordable places to live.

Poilievre said that after eight years in government, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals have failed to stimulate the construction of enough homes to meet demand — a situation that has made young people increasingly disillusioned about their financial futures.

Interesting – both are getting hammered in the comments.

Why won’t Greenpeace admit that wind turbines may be killing whales?

Who cares about whales? Whales might be dying because of sonar surveying, but Greenpeace simply ignores the science that doesn’t suit it.

So far last year, 71 whales have washed up dead on the shores of New England and neighbouring states. The rate seems to have risen in recent years along with a growth in the number of offshore wind turbines. A small group of concerned citizens have started to campaign against the turbines on behalf of the whales, and the journalist Michael Shellenberger has made a short film about their efforts called Thrown to the Wind.

Is Canada a Tyranny? Aristotle on Justin Trudeau

The word “tyranny,” originally τυραννία (tyrannia) in the Greek, seems to have become part of the current lexicon. The term derives from τύραννος (tyrannos), which translates as “lord, master, sovereign” but eventually acquired more sinister connotations in the classical period of Greek history under the cruel and oppressive rule of various demagogues like, among others, Polycrates of Samos and, more famously, the grasping Dionysius of Syracuse.

In the present historical moment in most Western nations, tyrants or wannabe tyrants have begun to proliferate — in France, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, the European Union as a whole, the United States, and my own country, Canada. Especially Canada, where Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, “an effete pseudo-intellectual,” as Matt Taibbi describes him, seems to have become the poster boy for the resurgence of the modern tyrant.

LETTER TO U.S. CONGRESS REGARDING CANADA, 9/14/23.

… As Americans we have a duty and obligation to provide our lawmakers with information that may reveal emerging threats and any unlawful activities, both domestic and foreign, against the U.S. government.

Our overall concern is that it appears the Canadian government is enacting policies that are slowing chipping away at the freedoms, liberties, and individual rights of its citizens and therefore can have profound negative impact on our relations with that government.

It is no secret that the Chinese Communist party is making its mark both here in the United States and Canada. But, more-so in Canada because the people of that nation do not have the Constitutional protections, we in America have.

7 years not enough to build the millions of homes needed to fix affordability, warns economist

Canada has no chance of building the additional millions of homes Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. projects would be needed to restore housing affordability over the next seven years, according to the chief economist of Desjardins Group.

Speaking at a panel on the current housing market crisis hosted by the Economic Club of Canada in Toronto on Sept. 12, Desjardins’ Jimmy Jean said it took “not seven years, not 10 years, not 15 years, but 30 years” to build the last 5.8 million homes in Canada.

This issue alone should kill Trudeau but Canada is a pretty messed up Banana republic.

I doubt his base will abandon Junior and all he needs is a good showing by the NDP to remain in power.

The “Affordability issue” may be tamped down if home owner equity is protected by the ongoing shortage. This will be especially true of eastern urban centres, traditional LPC strongholds. People vote with their wallets.

Do not expect significantly lowered immigration targets, the emerging narrative is to caution against blaming “immigrants” when a made in Canada “housing crisis” is really to blame.

The narrative implies that criticism of an extraordinarily callous mass immigration policy that stresses all of Canada’s infrastructure to the breaking point is criticism of immigrants and of course that’s racist.

In short the same old same old – Canadian citizens are labeled racist whenever they attempt to stand up for their own best interests against the UNIPARTY and their corporate cronies.

The Return of Urban Retail Deserts

Stores fleeing from rising theft will leave residents in cities like New York with fewer places to shop, less merchandise to buy, and higher prices to pay.

The rising social disorder and crime of the 1970s and 1980s drove out not only hundreds of thousands of residents from New York City, but also many businesses. Within a few years, entire communities lacked basic amenities like supermarkets and drugstores; empty storefronts littered shopping districts. That started to change only when crime began falling in the 1990s and neighborhoods rebounded—first in New York and then in other big cities—prompting national retailers to begin setting up shop in places that they had once avoided. Thousands of stores and tens of thousands of jobs blossomed in New York alone thanks to this retail revival. But those gains are vanishing before our eyes as rising retail theft is driving a new era of closings.

Lithium battery fires will cause a tragedy

Scooter Lithium Battery Fire

Lithium batteries in electric vehicles are going to cause a major disaster – it’s only a matter of time.

I say this as my fingertips hover a quarter-inch from the Lithium battery in this laptop. The risk from phones, vape pens, and laptops is reasonably well-known and manageable, given their small size. However, we should mention that cheap mass production in China has seen a lowering of standards and a sharp rise in accidents…

Ignoring Russian History Is Costly

A large nation does not engage in the same pattern of behavior for centuries for no reason.

Russia has changed little over the past 400 years. Yes, Russians now drive cars instead of oxcarts, but from a political, cultural, military, and geopolitical standpoint, Russia and how it behaves has changed remarkably little. In fact, the run-up to and trajectory of the war in Ukraine is very much a repeat of Russian history. Yet Western governments have completely ignored this, and their obliviousness is proving costly.

The Taliban Have a New Drug of Choice

After cornering the market on heroin, they’ve pivoted to a quicker and more profitable alternative.

As if Coca-Cola gave up making soft drinks, the Taliban announced to great fanfare last year that they were getting out of the drug business. The group that rode big opium profits to a takeover of Afghanistan in the summer of 2021 suddenly, seemingly, swore off the stuff. Poppy planting was banned and drugs were off the menu. Or that, at least, is what they want the world to believe.

China Taking Over While Europe Sleeps

Europe is in “complete denial” as China proceeds to spread its influence on the continent. At least that is the urgent, unequivocal view of Ivana Karásková, a Czech foreign influence specialist and a special adviser to European Commission Vice President Věra Jourová.

“In some countries, awareness of [Chinese influence operations] is high because they have a history of Russian-backed action. Elsewhere, it’s complete denial,” she told Politico. “It’s very uneven in terms of awareness. There are some countries where the discussion isn’t happening at all.”

Workplace accident kills 5 in Gaza

Palestinians protest against Israel because Palestinians blew themselves up

Powerful explosion kills 5 Palestinians in Gaza. Israel says the blast was caused by mishandled bomb

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — At least five Palestinians were killed and over 20 others were wounded Wednesday in an explosion next to the separation fence along the Israeli frontier with Gaza, Palestinian health officials said.

The cause of the blast was not immediately known.

The explosion took place during a demonstration along the border marking the anniversary of Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005. The event on Gaza’s eastern border was organized by Hamas, the Islamic militant group that has governed the coastal territory since 2007.
