As Meta news block takes its toll, local media not unified on a path forward

Though Meta’s block of news availability on the social media giant’s platforms is already taking its toll on web traffic to news sites, local media outlets aren’t united on a path forward.

Just over two weeks ago, Meta — which owns Facebook and Instagram — began ending the availability of news on those sites in Canada in response to the passage of Bill C-18, the Online News Act, which takes effect by the end of this year.

Paul MacNeill of Island Press Limited, which publishes several weekly community papers in Prince Edward Island, and Jeff Elgie, whose company Village Media publishes around 21 community news websites in Ontario, both spoke on CBC’s The House, which aired Saturday.

Nude ‘Tour de France’ banned for public indecency on several of its stages

Seven stages of the so-called “nude Tour de France” were banned for public indecency in restrictions which climate activists said was “state intimidation”.

The cyclists are taking part in the World Naked Bike Ride, an annual event launched in 2004 in London and which last year crossed the capital without raising eyebrows. However, since the tour kicked off in Nantes, western France, on Aug 8, local authorities have prohibited seven stages by decree.

Dogs flown in to search for unmarked graves in Cree territory

After George E. Pachano left residential school, he swore he would never return.

But decades later, the 62-year-old, who was forced to spend four years of his childhood at St. Philip’s Indian Residential School (Anglican) of Fort George Island, is now helping co-ordinate the search for unmarked graves in the Cree Nation of Chisasibi.

In July, Pachano was on site as two dogs — trained to sniff out historic human remains — and their handlers from the Ottawa Valley Search and Rescue Dog Association searched the grounds.

Ford CEO Admits ‘Reality Check’ When He Took Electric F-150 Truck on Road Trip

Ford CEO Jim Farley admitted he underwent a “reality check” when he tried to make a cross-country road trip in the Ford electric F-150.

“Charging has been pretty challenging,” Mr. Farley said in a video on X, formerly known as Twitter. “It was a really good reality check of the challenges of what our customers go through and the importance of fast charging and what we’re going to have to do to improve the charging experience.”

Cows for the Climate? Canada Breeds ‘Emission-Friendly’ Bovines

Canada’s dairy farms are set to go whole hog on specially-bred cows whose burps would emit less methane—a world first.

By using a rigorous process of genetic selection, Semex, the company providing semen from ‘low-methane-emitting’ bulls, claims emissions by Canada’s dairy industry could drop 20-30% by 2050.

Researchers from the University of Guelph and the University of Alberta examined methane-emission data from the Holstein Friesian breed of cattle on 6,000 farms— about 60% of all Canada’s dairy farms.

Trudeau vs. Poilievre: redefining the Family Man

Mrs. Doubtfire, a character immortalized by the late Robin Williams, once said, “There are all sorts of different families … But if there’s love, dear … those are the ties that bind, and you’ll have a family in your heart, forever.”

This sentiment, emanating from the 1993 film where a father dresses as a woman to remain connected to his children, deeply resonated. Since then, our societal perception of family has evolved.

Not sure but I think this article is testing the waters for Junior’s coming out.

Detransitioners Seek Justice in Court

Innocent ‘detransitioners’ misled into procedures that have harmed them are beginning to speak out and demand justice.

In 2007, Boston Children’s Hospital opened the first pediatric gender clinic in the United States. Known as the Gender Multispecialty Service (GeMS), the hospital describes it as “the first major program in the U.S. to focus on gender-diverse and transgender adolescents.” And the hospital touts the fact that, since founding GeMS, “we have expanded our program to welcome patients from ages 3 to 25.”

How Putin uses the Russian Orthodox Church in his war on Ukraine

At the Army 2023 expo of Russian military technology last week, it was not the vast Yars intercontinental missile or the captured western armoured vehicles that stole the show but an inflatable church.

The mobile chapel, or military field temple, is meant to serve the spiritual needs of Russian soldiers in the red zone at the front in Ukraine. It includes hanging space for icons, the sacred pictures used for devotional purposes in the Orthodox tradition.

The death of the great American city

The flight of office workers to the hinterlands will have profound effects on society.

The King of Wall Street has spoken, but the peasants are not listening. Ever since the end of the lockdowns, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, like many of his elite counterparts in cities from New York to Seattle, has been calling for the workers to return to their cubicles and daily commutes. The business elites have been cheered on by big-city corporate media, like The Economist. Even the White House, despite its green posturing, is pushing to get most Americans back on the road, often for long, mind-numbing, energy-consuming commutes.

German Catholic Group Considers Banning AfD Members From Lay Positions

The head of one of Germany’s major Roman Catholic associations has called for banning members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) from lay positions within the Roman Catholic Church, arguing their conservative values are in contradiction to the faith.

Irme Stetter-Karp, President of the Central Committee of German Catholics (ZdK), stated that she did not believe that members of the AfD and their values were compatible with Christianity, and called their recent surge in the polls “dangerous.”

Canada’s Climate Goals ‘Likely Not Possible’ Without Triple Non-Carbon Electricity Output, Says Report to Senate

Canada must double or triple its non-carbon electricity output to meet its 2050 net-zero emission targets, says a Newfoundland and Labrador submission to the Senate energy committee. The submission says meeting the targets is “likely not possible” without more federal subsidies.

“To achieve its goal of a net zero electricity sector by 2035 Canada will need 121 terawatt hours of new supply to replace carbon sources,” Energy NL wrote in the submission, as reported by Blacklock’s Reporter. It says this amount of electricity generation is equivalent to that of “four Churchill Falls.”
