Permanent refuge for some Ukrainians who fled to Canada may be politically fraught

As Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine from the north and south of the country last year and rockets rained down across the county, hundreds of thousands of people made for the borders to escape.

Many had just hours of notice and left with a handful of belongings as they boarded crowded trains or joined massive convoys of citizens headed for safety.

Few likely expected to be away from their homes for more than a year, but some are now considering the prospect of putting down roots elsewhere.

Cops are ‘keeping an open mind’ over motive as they guard house near to where man and woman were stabbed to death by knifeman – before killer ‘murdered’ another victim and mowed down three with van

Counter terror police have raided two properties in Nottingham today after three people died and three others were injured in a ‘knife’ and van rampage – with cops saying they are keeping an ‘open mind’ over the motive for the attack.

The raid took place this afternoon around Ilkeston Road in a student area of the city, where a witness saw a young man and a young woman being stabbed by a black-clad attacker with a rucksack at 4am.

After the first attack, a third body was found on Magdala Street. Police were then called to another incident on Milton Street, where a van ran into three people who are now being treated in hospital.

Barbara Kay: NB Premier’s Stance Supporting Parental Rights a Promising Sign

New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs has called for a review of LGBTQ policies in schools. Henceforth, parents of children under 16 will have the right to be informed of any changes of names or pronouns at school. “For it purposefully to be hidden from the parents, that’s a problem,” said Higgs. “To suggest that it’s OK that parents don’t need to know — just stop and think about that question for a moment.”

Toronto’s next mayor will inherit large budget shortfalls and no clear way to plug them

Toronto’s next mayor will inherit an expected budget shortfall of nearly $50-billion over the next decade – and no clear way to fix it.

The city is already expected to be short $1-billion in its operating budget this year, as it continues to contend with pandemic-related losses, largely owing to a drop in transit revenues. To balance its books, Toronto has been putting off maintenance and infrastructure spending, dipping into reserve funds and relying on higher levels of government to bail it out.

The vast majority of Americans do not support transgender athletes competing on the team of their choice, instead believing they should contest against those with the same birth gender, according to a new Gallup survey.

Similarly, just 26 percent of Americans endorse the idea of transgender athletes playing on teams that match their current gender identity – down significantly from 34 percent two years ago.
