Ukraine war: US to provide long-range missiles in latest aid package

The US says additional military aid to Ukraine worth $2.2bn (£1.83bn) will include long-range missiles capable of doubling its attack range.

It brings the total amount of military aid given to Ukraine to more than $29.3bn (£24.31bn) since February 2022.

The package includes ground-launched small-diameter bombs (GLSDB) which can hit targets 150km (93 miles) away.

But officials refused to be drawn on speculation that the munitions could be used to attack parts of annexed Crimea.

Loblaw’s lifting of No Name price freeze shows discount grocery in Canada is an illusion

Loblaw’s suspension of its price freeze this week on No Name products should prompt us to reflect on a bigger issue: The company’s No Frills chain, which heavily stocks these house-brand items, is not a real discount grocer.

This may come as a surprise for some Canadians, but our country doesn’t really have any true discount grocery chain. With higher food prices and a growing number of consumers seeking refuge from record-setting food inflation at the grocery store, real discount grocery stores would really come in handy. But the option is simply not there.

André Pratte: Did no one vet anti-Islamophobia rep’s past?

We were told by the Prime Minister’s Office that Amira Elghawaby was appointed as Canada’s first Special Representative on Combatting Islamophobia “following an open, transparent, and merit-based selection process.” It is beyond my comprehension how such a process would not have involved a simple web search to see whether Elghawaby had said or written something that could be embarrassing for the government or her, or both. For instance, writings that would have revealed a simplistic view of Islamophobia in Québec?

Anger as woke firm refuses to print stickers defining women as ‘adult human females’ due to staff’s trans rights backlash

A printing firm is in a women’s rights row after declaring it would no longer make stickers defining them as ‘Adult human females’ for a prominent campaigner.

Helloprint – which has a UK branch but is headquartered in Rotterdam – has suddenly refused to supply them to Kellie-Jay Keen, who is the founder of Standing for Women.

Her now well-known dictionary-style design shows the word ‘Woman’ above a definition which reads ‘adult human female’ and has been printed by them some 80,000 times.

The Rising Cost of Electric Vehicles

For a new (or, more accurately, updated) technology that some people are clamoring to buy — there’s a lengthy waiting list — electric vehicles (EVs) are receiving a remarkable amount of taxpayer support. There are federal tax credits for the purchase of qualified EVs and, for that matter, EV chargers. A number of states also provide incentives for the purchase of EVs. Not only that, the Biden administration has committed to allocating $5 billion to the states to set up a “national charging network” of 500,000 public chargers by 2030. It won’t be enough money, and the target date may not be realistic, but central planning is like that. Another $2.5 billion will be available to help fund various worthy EV-related causes, including supporting “community and corridor charging.”

The Ukraine repair shop: where Russian tanks go to change sides

The first task is to wipe off or cover up the Z, says Anatoly, 44, of the call sign infamously daubed on Russian hardware involved in the war in Ukraine. “We don’t want friendly fire later on.” Then the mechanics get to work.

In a secret location in Ukraine, within a vast warehouse that could be mistaken for a tank graveyard, what was once Russian – Soviet, in many cases – is being turned Ukrainian.

All the headlines have recently been made by the decision of Germany and a host of others to supply Ukraine with western heavy armour: Leopard 2s, Challengers and Abrams.

Japanese pacifism is dead

The Ukraine war has been a powerful catalyst

Japan is on manoeuvres. The country for so long tethered — or protected, according to your point of view — by the “pacifist” constitution imposed upon it by the occupying Americans after the Second World War may be about to break free of its bonds. Last December, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida announced a doubling of the defence budget over the next five years and the acquisition of counter-strike capability to deal with the perceived threat from China, principally, and North Korea to a lesser extent. It is a policy shift which can only be described as seismic.

It sure looks like CNN is greasing the skids under Don Lemon, preparing to dump him

One of the unsavory aspects of our current era is that firing a member of a “protected class” — racial and sexual minorities, plus women of any race — almost inevitably leads to cries of racism, sexism, homophobia, etc.  When a person is a “twofer” ticking two boxes indicating presumptively oppressed status, you need a bulletproof list of offenses to charge the target with.

Government of Pakistan Charges Jihad Watch with Blasphemy over Muhammad Cartoon Post

Devout Pakistani Muslim and future Canadian Immigration Minister calls for death of Asia Bibi.

At least the government of Pakistan is more honest than the government of Britain.

The post in question is here. It’s an announcement that that the Muhammad Art Exhibit and Cartoon Contest that Pamela Geller and I organized in Garland Texas in May 2015 was sold out, and an excerpt from a Breitbart article about the event. Why has Pakistan been so slow on the uptake here? The post has been out there for over seven and a half years. It could be, of course, because issues of “blasphemy” and the freedom of speech are once again in the news because of the Qur’an-burning in Sweden.

The Spanish Samuel Paty

What would it take for Spain—or any society, for that matter—to reassess the scale at which it welcomes immigrants from Muslim-majority countries? Not that such a reassessment would necessarily make a practical difference, since most such immigrants (primarily from neighboring Morocco in Spain’s case) file asylum claims underwritten by EU protocols over which the member states have entirely given up their sovereignty. Though such claims are often long shots, the mere act of filing one immediately shields the applicant from deportation pending a judge’s ruling on whether to grant or deny it. Those immigrants who come in a plainly illegal manner, meanwhile, or those who overstay the denial of their claim, are admittedly a population which, if public opinion supported such a move, the state could more swiftly deport than it currently is.

‘Honour’ killing of YouTube star sparks outrage in Iraq

The death of a young YouTube star at the hands of her father has sparked outrage in Iraq, as so-called “honour” killings continue in the conservative country.

Tiba al-Ali, 22, was killed by her father on 31 January in the southern province of Diwaniya, interior ministry spokesperson Saad Maan said on Twitter on Friday.

Police had attempted to mediate between Ali – who lived in Turkey and was visiting Iraq – and her relatives to “resolve the family dispute in a definitive manner”, Maan said.
