Continental Breakfast (Open Thread)

Sorry I haven’t been doing too many of these lately. What’s happened is that I have basically run out of ideas. Suggestions are appreciated.

Here is the Harpy Eagle. I’ve just learned these things exist. Good grief.

No this isn’t some Italian weirdo at an art show in Venice. It’s a flipping bird. It’s got a big beak and it’s judging me and it’s not impressed.

Its kid is judging me too.

It also comes in bright red

I have never had an allergy but I’ve long had a vague feeling that something in the South American jungle would eventually get me once I inevitably ran into it. (“Now who’s not allergic to anything?”) But I was thinking maybe a spore or a lizard. All yours in the comments.

The Misuses of a Colorado Atrocity Redefining decency

Redefining decency.

When the news broke that an armed man had entered Club Q, an “LGBTQ” nightclub in Colorado Springs, at about midnight on Saturday, on the eve of something called the “Transgender Day of Remembrance,” and had proceeded to kill five people and wound at least twenty-five, one thing seemed all but certain. It was too early to know what had motivated the perpetrator, Anderson Lee Aldrich (who apparently was arrested last year, after a “brief standoff with law enforcement,” for making a bomb threat against his mother). But it seemed a safe enough prediction that the usual “LGBTQ” activists and their allies in the media would soon be spinning this atrocity to their advantage.

That Art is Ours — Let’s Act Like It

On April 25, 1976, the Chicago Cubs were playing the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium.  Halfway through the game, an unemployed protester and his 11-year-old son jumped onto the field and attempted to light an American flag on fire.  Cubs centerfielder Rick Monday saw what they were doing, ran over, and grabbed the flag away from them before they were able to burn it.  The crowd gave Monday a standing ovation and spontaneously sang “God Bless America.”

Mendicino says Lucki warned him of ‘urgent’ threat of violence in Alberta before Emergencies Act was invoked

Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says the head of the RCMP shared with him sensitive police information the day before the government decided to invoke the Emergencies Act — and warned him that some protesters in Alberta were “willing to go down with the cause.”

“This was a threshold moment for me. There is no doubt about it,” Mendicino told the Public Order Emergency Commission Tuesday.

The minister said he spoke with Commissioner Brenda Lucki on Feb. 13. During that conversation, he said, Lucki updated him on plans to execute a police operation at the blockade near Coutts, Alta.

The question remains … How many RCMP informants were part of this band of revolutionaries?

These evil crimes are why we should lock ’em up

IN September, when commenting on the evil killing of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel at bedtime in her own home, I said, ‘A final word to the “lock ’em up brigade”. The thing about locking criminals up for a long time (the serious ones, the nasty ones) is that then they are not free to burst into the homes of little girls at bedtime to continue their gangland feud. If you lock up dangerous criminals they can sort out all their feuding in prison, where they should have plenty of time on their hands. Only then can the children have a peaceful bedtime story instead of being fatally shot in their own homes.’

We should all remember this when some bleeding-heart liberal tells you the prison population is ‘too high’.

Racism cannot explain away youth violence

We must not make excuses for violent perpetrators.

Youth violence is intrinsically tragic. It is a catastrophe that so many young men and boys, due to a complex matrix of moral, social, economic and cultural reasons, make decisions and take actions that will likely lead to the permanent and vicious disfiguring of their lives and those of others. There is no silver-bullet solution or public-policy programme that will completely resolve this issue. One thing we must not do, however, is hand the young men caught up in youth violence an excuse – a narrative about deprivation or racism that can be used to excuse or explain away their behaviour.

GUNTER: Trudeau’s denial on China’s interference simply ludicrous

Just who does Prime Minister Justin Trudeau imagine is going to believe him?

On Sunday, during a stop in Tunisia to attend the Francophonie summit, our prime minister insisted to Global News that he had no idea who the 11 candidates were who received money and support from China’s Communist government during the 2019 federal election.

40 people on FBI terror watchlist apprehended at US borders in October – 25 at the US-Canadian border

At least 40 individuals on the US terrorist watch list have been nabbed while trying to enter the country in the last month, according to US Customs and Border Protection.

In October, nine people whose names are flagged on the terror watch list tried to sneak over the US border illegally, circumventing border walls or crossing at a point between official points of entry and later being detained by the US Border Patrol.

An additional 31 suspected terrorists were stopped at usual ports of entry by customs agents — 25 at the US-Canadian border and the six at the southern border.

WTF?  Just who is in charge of immigration in Canada?

Mendicino’s Spokesperson Was ‘Encouraging’ Journalists to Find Dirt on Convoy Protesters, Text Messages Reveal

According to text message exchanges summitted to the Emergencies Act inquiry, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino’s communications director was “encouraging” journalists to investigate who the convoy protesters were before their arrival and where their crowd-sourced funds came from, apparently without knowing if there were any particular concerns to be unearthed.

The delicious fall of Sam Bankman-Fried

The FTX founder is the sort of sanctimonious fraud our species knows well

Dame Edna Everage says one of life’s most precious gifts is the ability to laugh at the misfortunes of others. You may lament this instinct, yet we all harbor it. New Yorkers are especially prone when it comes to property envy. Every couple of years, it feels like, a skyscraper goes up in the city that is significantly taller than the previous very tall new skyscraper. Each time one does, the only thing that goes higher than the tower’s residences is the cost of purchasing them. So with what rapture do New Yorkers read about the misfortunes these buildings go through. Oh, the thrill of learning that they sway in the wind, that people get seasick in the penthouses, that when owners put their garbage in the trash chutes the noise on the lower floors is like a tactical nuke.

Will there be Madoff or Holmes like jail time for Sammy?

Unlikely given his parents Dem party standing.

Disgraced FTX boss Sam Bankman-Fried looks distressed as he hunkers down with Mommy & Daddy at his $40M penthouse hideaway in the Bahamas

Diversity Up, Public Safety Down

London’s new police commissioner touts increased female representation on the force, but crime in the city is rising.

Last month, London mayor Sadiq Khan accompanied the Metropolitan Police Service’s new commissioner, Mark Rowley, on a walkabout through Stratford, East London. A series of high-profile scandals have rocked the force in recent months, and the mayor and commissioner hoped to inspire public confidence in the police. They also aimed to attract new recruits.

“As I lead reform at the Met,” Rowley told an audience in Stratford Town Centre, “I would encourage you to come along to an outreach event in your area, where you can learn about the opportunities for a great career.”

Why ‘Climate Reparations’ Is Such an Awful Idea

This latest Joe Biden-John Kerry Green New Deal socialist scam that the wealthy Western economies are supposed to sign up for so-called climate reparations to pay poor countries for alleged damage caused by the industrial world’s use of fossil fuels is a terrible idea.

It’s another one of these socialist, central-planning, redistributionist thoughts that plague the Biden administration and unfortunately too many other OECD countries, especially in Europe.
