Western leaders are madder than I thought

They are more willing than I predicted to immiserate their populations

Europe is belatedly grappling with the (entirely foreseeable) consequences of imposing sanctions on Russia. The Nord Stream pipeline has been intermittently closed over the summer, reportedly for “maintenance” (which no one believes). Another closure has just been announced.

As a result, prices are rocketing across the continent, with the ripple effects already being felt by businesses and consumers. “The electricity market is no more a functioning market because there’s one actor — Putin — who’s systematically trying to destroy it”, EU President Ursula von der Leyen said yesterday, as she pledged emergency EU action to mitigate the impact of soaring costs on consumers and businesses.

Ortis Lawyer Conveniently Appointed Judge: Trial of alleged RCMP secret leaker delayed a year

OTTAWA – The trial of an RCMP employee accused of breaching Canada’s secrecy law has been delayed a year after a new defence lawyer took on his case.

An eight-week judge and jury trial for Cameron Jay Ortis had been slated to begin next week.

Ortis was taken into custody Sept. 12, 2019, for allegedly revealing secrets to an unnamed recipient and planning to give additional classified information to an unspecified foreign entity.

… Ortis, 50, had been represented by Ian Carter, but Carter was appointed as an Ontario Superior Court judge earlier this year.

I guess the cover up was taking longer than anticipated.

Critics warn Ottawa’s new ‘luxury tax’ on pricey cars, planes and boats could backfire

Ottawa’s luxury tax on high-priced cars, planes and boats is coming into effect today, despite warnings from some critics that the measure will hurt the economy and turn out to be more trouble than it’s worth.

As of Thursday, luxury cars and personal aircraft with sale prices of over $100,000 and boats for personal use with price tags of more than $250,000 will be slapped with a 10 to 20 per cent tax.

The measure received final approval this past June and is expected to raise $163 million in new revenue per year.

Dozens of Fifth Columnist Communist Chinese “Canadian” groups side with Beijing’s stance on Taiwan

When a group of Canadian parliamentarians recently announced plans to visit Taiwan, Beijing‘s response was swift, with its Ottawa embassy vowing “resolute and forceful measures” against any country interfering in China’s territorial integrity.

Beijing’s Foreign Ministry had earlier summoned Canadian diplomat Jim Nickel over a G7 statement that called on China to peacefully resolve tensions surrounding U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan, telling Nickel the statement was helping “a villain do evil.”

GOLDSTEIN: Pandemic employment recovery almost all gov’t jobs, report says

While Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals boast about Canada’s historically low unemployment rate of 4.9% as a sign of economic recovery from the pandemic, a new study by the Fraser Institute reports almost all of the gains have been in the public sector.

What happens when civil servants get partisan?

Non-partisanship is a principle of Canada’s public service. So when Ottawa civil servants cheered Trudeau’s arrival, they violated a basic principle of government

Trudeau is shoring up the base at our expense.

Centre Ice group gets honest drops ‘Conservative’ from name

An advocacy group started by centrist Conservatives to provide more of a voice to the political middle has dropped the party’s name to expand its base.

The “Centre Ice Conservatives” have become the “Centre Ice Canadians.” What does that say about the state of the federal party and the role of moderate Tories within it?

Moderate as in never was a conservative.

Canadian diplomat tries to hide meeting with Convicted Terrorist after uproar

The Canadian Representative Office to the Palestinian Authority deleted a tweet about its top diplomat’s meeting with Palestinian official Jibril Rajoub,OK describing him as a “friend of Canada,” following an uproar.

Rajoub served time in Israeli prisons for terrorism. As Yasser Arafat’s top security adviser, he used torture to stifle political dissent. In more recent years, he has been the head of the Palestinian Football Association and the Palestinian Olympic Committee.

Still wondering why Laith Marouf was hired? It’s the Ottawa culture.

Female troops saw the highest level of unwanted sexual contact since DOD began collecting data

WASHINGTON – A new Pentagon survey shows women in the military endured the highest level of unwanted sexual contact since the Defense Department began tracking the data sixteen years ago, a startling finding that shows sexual crimes rising steadily despite hundreds of millions spent to curb the problem and vows by senior leaders to tackle itt.

The Pentagon estimates that sexual assaults among women service members surged an estimated 35% from 2018 to 2021. The survey shows that 8.4% of women and 1.5% of men in the active-duty military said they had been the victim of a sex crime, ranging from from groping to rape, according to results of the survey obtained by USA TODAY. In 2018, an estimated 6.2% of women in the armed services were victims of unwanted sexual contact.

Trudeau defends CSIS after over claims agency informant smuggled girls into Syria

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stood behind the country’s top civilian intelligence agency on Wednesday in response to an allegation that one of its contractors helped traffic three British teenage girls to Islamic State extremists seven years ago.

A new book by U.K.-based writer Richard Kerbaj — The Secret History of the Five Eyes — is set to be published on Thursday. It claims that an informant for the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS) smuggled Shamima Begum, 15 at the time, and her school friends Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase — 16 and 15 at the time — into northern Syria, and that the informant told his Canadian handlers.

As New York’s Gun Law Goes Into Effect, Demand for Permits Spikes

By the time the Niagara County Courthouse opened on Wednesday morning, 150 people were lined up to apply for permits that would let them carry concealed handguns. Nearly 100 had camped out overnight, with some staying awake in folding chairs, taking walks at intervals to keep warm.

The permitting office at the county courthouse, located in Lockport, N.Y., has been processing about 150 applications every day this week, officials said, part of a spike in demand before most provisions of New York’s new gun law go into effect on Thursday. Similar lines have formed outside permitting offices around the state ahead of the new rules, which are designed to tightly control firearms after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a century-old law regulating guns that was among the nation’s strongest.

Jesse Kline: Lisa LaFlamme is not necessarily the martyr you may think she is

Having witnessed wave after wave of cost-cutting measures and layoffs in Canadian media, I was not at all surprised to hear that “CTV National News” anchor Lisa LaFlamme had been let go. But unlike the other 13,800 employees who lost their jobs in radio and television broadcasting between 2010 and 2021, the reaction to LaFlamme’s departure was swift, and filled with the type of over-the-top righteous indignation that has now become a staple of Canada’s chattering classes.

Six of the UK’s biggest pub and brewing company leaders called for urgent intervention by the Government in an open letter published yesterday.
