This Independence Day, Americans’ minds turn toward those who fought and died for the country and the people in that country they love. These people were, are, filled with hopes and dreams and ideals — ways to live a free life. They dream of a family, a home, a business. They dream of building things and lives for the future. Those dreams only grow in freedom. In tyrannical governments, where graft and bribes and knowing the right person and rigging the system are the way of life, innovations do not grow. Fear is the operative emotion and self-protection is the chief goal. It is difficult to innovate with a government gun to one’s head.

Shireen Abu Aqla: US report on journalist’s death unacceptable, family says

Shireen Abu Aqla’s brother has heavily criticised a US report that concluded unintentional Israeli gunfire was likely to have been responsible for the Palestinian-American reporter’s death.

Tony Abu Aqla told the BBC the findings were “unacceptable” and insisted his sister was targeted by Israeli troops.

The Al Jazeera correspondent was shot in the head while covering an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank in May.

Turkey is a year away from presidential and parliamentary elections. Many Turks are starving. Literally. Their per capita GDP of around $9,500 has crushed many of them under a triple-digit inflation rate and a fast-depreciating national currency, while independent economists warn that this may be only the beginning of worse torment in a country of 84 million people, excluding 9 million refugees and migrants.

Many Turks, although starving, are nevertheless proud that they have a leader who can confront the “infidel West” — including their traditional rival and neighbor, Greece. It is precisely this feeling that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, whose popularity has been plummeting in recent months, sees as a national weakness to stoke. Warmongering, the Islamist strongman evidently calculates, may convince the Turks to support revisionist bullying and ignore their misery.

Putin ‘is recruiting prisoners as cannon fodder’

Russia is recruiting prisoners to fight in Ukraine with the promise of almost £3,000 and their sentences being annulled if they come back alive after six months.

Inmates are being actively recruited in St Petersburg jails, according to independent media outlet IStories.

The convicts are told they will be put on the frontline to hunt down ‘Nazis’ in Ukraine in an arrangement that suggests they will be deployed as cannon fodder.

Crown seeks to revoke bail for ‘Freedom Convoy’ organizer Tamara Lich

OTTAWA – The Crown is seeking to revoke bail for Tamara Lich, a leader of the “Freedom Convoy,” after she appeared alongside a fellow organizer in an alleged breach of her conditions.

Lich was charged in February with mischief, obstructing police, counselling others to commit mischief and intimidation for her role in the massive protest against COVID-19 restrictions that gridlocked downtown Ottawa for more than three weeks.

Majority of Canadians Believe Trudeau Has Fractured Society, Damaged Democracy

In his acceptance speech after winning a third term in office, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sought to downplay the divisions within Canada, saying “that’s not what I see.”

A poll from Maru Public Opinion says he is wrong. A Nanos Research Group poll finds that just 17% of respondents believe Canada should accept more immigrants to our country. Trudeau responded by establishing the highest immigration quotas in history. The Liberal government target stands at 451,000 migrants for 2024.

In the meantime, 77% of survey respondents said Canada feels more fractured than ever. 52% said Canada’s democratic system is broken and “needs a major overhaul.”

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says Canadians should get a COVID booster shot every nine months so that their vaccination status stays “up-to-date.”

“What exactly do we mean by up-to-date vaccination? Let me be very clear: Up-to-date means you’ve received your last dose in the past nine months,” said Duclos in a press conference on June 30.

“If you’ve already received a first booster, that’s great, and please see if you’re eligible for a second or a third booster to remain up-to-date.”

Highland Park Shooter Robert Eugene Crimo planned attack for weeks – Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Covelli

A man suspected of killing six people at a 4 July parade near Chicago planned the attack for weeks, police say.

Law enforcement believe that Robert Crimo III, 21, legally bought the high-powered rifle he used in the attack.

The suspect is believed to have disguised himself in women’s clothing to escape the scene with the fleeing crowd, officials added.

Former Ontario bureaucrats charged in alleged $11M COVID-19 fraud are headed back to court

The Ontario bureaucrats fired after the alleged theft of $11 million in provincial COVID-19 relief funds are headed back to court this week as criminal proceedings continue.

Sanjay and Shalini Madan, a married Toronto couple terminated from the public service in 2020 after the alleged fraud, will be in long trial assignment court on Wednesday.

They were charged last September by the Ontario Provincial Police, but their criminal trial might not begin in earnest until September 2023.
