US withdrawal triggered catastrophic defeat of Afghan forces, damning watchdog report finds

Afghan armed forces collapsed last year because they had been made dependent on US support that was abruptly withdrawn in the face of a Taliban offensive, according to a scathing assessment by a US government watchdog.

A report by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (Sigar) on the catastrophic defeat that led to the fall of Kabul on 15 August, blamed the administrations of Donald Trump and Joe Biden as well as the Afghan government of Ashraf Ghani.

“Sigar found that the single most important factor in the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces’ (ANDSF) collapse in August 2021 was the decision by two US presidents to withdraw US military and contractors from Afghanistan, while Afghan forces remained unable to sustain themselves,” said the congressionally mandated report, which was released on Wednesday.

Cheezus you have 20 years of lies to blame though personally I place the entire responsibility on the shoulders of Malala.

He Was a World-Renowned Cancer Researcher. Now He’s Collecting Unemployment.

Behind the fall of David Sabatini, ‘one of the greatest scientists’ of his generation.

In 2018, David Sabatini was a world-renowned molecular biologist. He was a tenured professor at MIT. He ran a major lab at the Whitehead Institute, overseeing a team of 39 researchers, postdocs and technicians. Their job was to disentangle the mystery of the mTOR signaling pathway, a protein Sabatini had discovered while still in medical school, at Johns Hopkins. The mTOR signaling pathway plays a critical role in tumor development. Figuring out how it works would go a long way toward saving countless lives.

This was why Sabatini was predicted to win the Nobel Prize. It was how he reeled in between three and four million dollars every year for his lab from the National Institutes of Health, the Pentagon and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, among others. It is why his colleagues have described him to me with words like “genius,” “one of the best scientists alive,” and “a pillar.”

If the American Empire Falls, Will the Republic Rise?

Victor Davis Hanson, eminent classicist, provides this warning to Americans in the lead of his most recent article at Epoch Times, updated May 16:

Americans are now entering uncharted, revolutionary territory.  They may witness things over the next five months that once would have seemed unimaginable.

It may prove in this momentous decade that the American Empire falls.  But take heart, because the fall of the empire — aren’t all empires finally a bundle of conceits destined to collapse? — may lead to the revival of the American Republic

Facebook’s slide into dystopia

Zuckerberg’s metaverse strategy isn’t working

It has been ten years since Facebook’s IPO. Superficially, the experience is the same: news feed, friends network, third-party apps. Yet the feel of the site has completely changed. Whether it was the parade of casual game notifications, the injection of endless clickbait and memes, or the slow ossification of discourse into like-minded and frequently vicious agreement, Facebook doesn’t feel antisocial these days so much as alien: a parade of voices each occupying a small, hermetic sphere, mostly oblivious to each other. (Of course, the alternative of having these spheres interact, as on Twitter, is far worse.)

“Banging Beyond Binaries” – The School District of Philadelphia encouraged teachers to attend a conference on “kink,” “BDSM,” “trans sex,” and “masturbation sleeves.”

Last year, the School District of Philadelphia encouraged teachers to attend a conference on “kink,” “BDSM,” “trans sex,” and “banging beyond binaries.”

In early July 2021, the district’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion sent invitations to the Philadelphia Trans Wellness Conference to teachers and staff on the SDP Connect mailing list, promoting the conference as a way to “learn more about the issues facing the trans community.” The conference was organized by the Mazzoni Center, an LGBTQ activist organization that has worked with the district on sexual-education programs. (When reached for comment, the School District of Philadelphia described its promotion of the conference as part of its commitment to “creating equitable and inclusive environments,” and said it did “not have any information” on the number of teachers who attended the event.

Russia’s laser weapon claim derided as propaganda

Russia claims to have used laser weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine, although the US says it has seen no evidence of this and Ukraine has derided it as propaganda. What are laser weapons and how effective could they be in the conflict?

Yury Borisov, the deputy prime minister in charge of military development, told Russian TV that a laser prototype called Zadira was being deployed in Ukraine and had burned up a Ukrainian drone within five seconds at a distance of 5km (three miles).

Spare us Prince Harry’s woke holidays

‘Sustainable’ tourism patronises locals and travellers alike.

The jet-setting Prince Harry has a lot to say about how other people should live. So it is no surprise that his woke gaze has now turned to tourism – ‘sustainable’ tourism, naturally.

Travalyst is a new venture led by the Duke of Sussex, in partnership with big travel firms like Booking.com, Expedia, Google, Skyscanner, Trip.com, Tripadvisor and Visa. Its aim is to develop a ‘sustainability’ scoring system, which can bring about ‘the systemic changes needed in order for sustainable travel to be taken out of the niche and into the mainstream’. So far, it succeeds only in patronising locals and tourists alike.

‘A clear case of wacktivism’: Elon Musk AGAIN lashes out at ‘scam’ S&P 500 ESG Index after Tesla was removed

Elon Musk lashed out on Twitter after Tesla was removed from a widely-followed sustainability index on Wednesday over concerns about the company’s lack of low carbon strategy, allegations of workplace racism and Autopilot deaths.

Tweeting into the wee hours of Thursday, Musk responded to well-known tech investor Cathie Wood, who called Tesla’s removal from the S&P 500 ESG Index ‘ridiculous’, adding: ‘Not worthy of any other response.’

‘Yup,’ responded Musk, ‘A clear case of wacktivism.’

Imams speak out amid furor over Western University LGBTQ poster

… Thursday, the London Council of Imams issued a statement looking to calm any conflict, saying they are “saddened” by the “increasing polarization in our society.”

“We do not want to contribute to that trend,” the imams’ statement read. “We want to do our part to promote understanding and harmony among the diverse people who live on these lands and who share many common goals and values, even as we differ on many issues.

“We unequivocally reject any hateful statement made towards any individual or group based on their religion, culture, ethnicity and/or sexual orientation.”

Conservative Party investigating racist email sent to Brown campaign

The Conservative Party of Canada says it’s investigating a complaint from the Patrick Brown campaign about a racist email which expressed support for Adolf Hitler and Nazism.

Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner, co-chair of Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown’s campaign for the Conservative leadership, posted the text of the email Wednesday on her Twitter account.

This stinks from the head down.

Jason Kenney is latest conservative leader to be pushed out for not being ‘extreme enough,’ federal tourism minister says

As conservatives across Canada reacted to the fall of Jason Kenney, a defining voice in their political movement, a Liberal from the Tory heartland offered an outsider’s diagnosis into the state of conservatism in the country.

“Mr. Kenney was pushed out of his party because he wasn’t extreme enough,” Tourism Minister Randy Boissonnault, an Edmonton MP, declared Thursday.

“It’s time for the moderates in conservative movements in this country to step up and ask themselves: Where is this train going?”

Huh? O’Toole was a case of false advertising and Kenney won the confidence vote but decided to push himself out. Certainly in the CPC’s case not one of the current leadership candidates will be able to alter the party’s leftward tilt.

‘This can’t be real’: Grubhub promotion turns New York City restaurants into a ‘war zone’

What were they thinking?

That’s what customers, restaurants and delivery workers want to know after a surprise promotion by the food delivery platform Grubhub went badly awry – and proved there’s really no such thing as a free lunch.

Grubhub’s plan was ambitious: to feed everyone in New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area for free, during lunch hours on Tuesday. The platform cited a survey it had conducted that found that 69% of working New Yorkers said they had skipped lunch.
