Patrice Dutil: Canadians refuse to let Sir John A. Macdonald be cancelled

The vandalism carried out in the summer of 2021 against statues of Sir John A. Macdonald, Queen Victoria and Egerton Ryerson was supported by only a small fringe of Canadians. And a new Leger-Postmedia poll makes the case that Macdonald’s reputation has only improved with every attack — every time his name has been removed from a building and every time a monument to him has been taken down.

Canada’s National Debt $1.1 Trillion, Growing By Nearly $400 Million Daily

“It’s hard for most of us to imagine a trillion-dollar debt, but we know what it’s like to watch a bill going up in real time, and that’s exactly what the Debt Clock shows Canadians,” said Franco Terrazzano, federal director of the Canadian Taxpayer’s Federation.

Canada’s Hospital Capacity Crisis Will Remain Long After The Pandemic Is Over

To solve the country’s capacity problem, experts say, leaders need to finally confront the deeper flaws in how Canadian health care is structured.

Canadian Interest Rates Forecast To Double In 2 Weeks, Timeline Accelerated: RBC

Canada’s largest bank is accelerating its forecast for higher interest rates. RBC sees the Bank of Canada (BoC) doubling the overnight rate at the April meeting. The bank is also accelerating its forecast, seeing a sharp and fast tightening cycle. By year end, they expect the overnight rate to hit the highest level in over a decade.

New Covid Mutant ‘XE’ Found In UK, More Transmissible Than Omicron Sub-Variant: WHO

“Early-day estimates indicate a community growth rate advantage of ~10 per cent as compared to BA.2, however this finding requires further confirmation. XE belongs to the Omicron variant until significant differences in transmission and disease characteristics, including severity, may be reported,” it added.

Hillary Clinton: Americans Don’t Want to Be Governed by ‘Extreme’ GOP Not Living in Reality

Clinton said, “I always thought the best politics is doing the best job you can do, and there are a lot that Democrats can talk about in the upcoming midterms. I’m aware that midterms are always difficult for the party in power, but we’ve got to start there and do a better job of telling it. For those who say it hasn’t gone far enough, that’s always the chorus in Democratic party politics. But I would add that in Republican party politics, you have an even greater disconnect. Unfortunately, most of that party has now gone to the extreme and are saying and doing things that have no basis in reality. So we’ve got a good case to make if we get our focus in the right place.”

Socialism: Is it Making a Comeback in the US?

I’m not sure I can answer why socialism is experiencing a comeback because as somebody who thinks about economic systems a lot, it’s very bizarre to me from an efficacy standpoint. In other words, it doesn’t have a lot of capabilities.

Here’s what I think. I have come to this conclusion: it sounds good on paper. I have a list of a lot of things, and I always say, “This sounds good on paper.” It sounds really good to say there are some people who are really rich. Bill Gates has a bunch of billions of dollars, right. We could take a billion from him and he would barely notice. That may be true — doesn’t mean it’s right — but it may be true that we could take a billion or two from him, George Soros, and all these rich guys, and give it to poor people. It sounds good on paper! But it’s not addressing the underlying issues of why people are poor.

Why Will Smith’s resignation from the Academy is a hollow gesture

I was surprised, and I will admit I was relieved, to read about Will Smith’s resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. I had been sure that Smith would follow in the footsteps of Jussie Smollett and Alec Baldwin, two criminals who cried large crocodile tears and blamed everybody else for their wrongdoings. True, Smith did start out with exercising his tear ducts and he did apologize to everyone but his victim, Chris Rock, until public outrage forced an empty apology to Rock, but with his Academy resignation, I believed he had finally come to his senses. That’s because I assumed that, by resigning from the Academy, Smith was making a genuine gesture of contrition.

Why an ISIS Propagandist Abandoned Islam

On February 7, 2016, Musa Cerantonio told a friend that his fame as Australia’s best-known ISIS supporter had become a burden. Fellow ISIS supporters felt mysteriously compelled to email or call him before committing crimes. “Why,” Cerantonio lamented, “does everyone, before they do stupid shit, get in contact with me?” In this case, the doer of stupid shit was Alo-Bridget Namoa, the “Bonnie” half of the terror couple she herself had dubbed “the jihadi Bonnie and Clyde.” She and Clyde, a.k.a. Sameh Bayda, were both later convicted of terror offenses. Namoa had contacted Cerantonio, the Australian authorities tapping his phone later revealed, because she needed to know where to get an ISIS flag in Sydney. ISIS supporters were treating him like a jihadist help desk. If you see her, Cerantonio told his friend, “slap her for me.” Later that year, Cerantonio was arrested for trying to travel by boat from Australia to ISIS territory in the southern Philippines. He has been in prison ever since, and he has 13 months left on his sentence.

A convert who is now deradicalized? We’ll see.

Putin’s invasion scrambles the West

How has the Ukraine crisis affected political life in the West? Deeply but contradictorily. Vladimir Putin’s invasion wakened sleeping populations to eternal power realities, exacerbated leftist de-platforming, and bizarrely enhanced his appeal on the Right.

Power realities: A century-long peace following the Napoleonic wars left Europeans mentally unprepared for the carnage of World War I; similarly, the 77-year peace after World War II bred a faulty European assumption that trade and diplomacy could solve the continent’s problems. Military strength was seen as anachronistic as slavery. Slogans such as “There is no military solution” and “War never solved anything” prevailed.

Meanwhile, the non-West remains focused on the timeless verities of military might.

These Are Some of the Monsters Ketanji Brown Jackson Protected

Senate Republicans mishandled the Ketanji Brown Jackson hearings in the familiar way that politicians do. There were too many efforts by individual politicians to play to their social media audiences. And the hearings went ahead without the full release or availability of materials on her caseload.

While some conservatives opposed making the hearings about her work in child abuse cases, the material that is emerging continues to be horrifying.

Jon Stewart vs Andrew Sullivan on the problem with white people

Jon Stewart has a show on Apple TV called “The Problem with Jon Stewart.” It’s basically just “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” minus the accent and with the addition of some guests. Each week, Stewart sets up a new problem which he’s going to tackle. So far this season he’s looked at COVID restrictions, gun control, climate change, the media and this week’s topic: The Problem with White People.

Stewart was always an ass.

The Overton window for Christian beliefs is narrowing

In Finland, two people were tried simply for quoting the Bible

In 17th Century Europe, you’d have swung for blaspheming against the dominant church of the day. In 2022, you can now be criminalised for professing the scripture of that same faith.

A Bishop and a parliamentarian have been tried for ‘hate speech’ in Finland, in this case for merely quoting and affirming biblical views. In 2019 MP Päivi Räsänen, grandmother of seven, had sent a tweet, accompanied by a Bible verse, criticising her church for co-sponsoring the Helsinki Pride parade.

Democrats: Party Of Child Mutilators & Kidnappers

Yeah, yeah, squall about it all you want, but that’s exactly what the Democratic Party is, if you take seriously the Biden Administration’s newly released guidelines on health care for trans youth. Take a look:

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Affairs released a document Thursday titled “Gender Affirming Care and Young People.” The same day, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Child Traumatic Stress Network – another subset of the HHS – released a parallel document titled, “Gender-Affirming Care Is Trauma-Informed Care.”
