Canadian energy stocks tumble after U.S. incursion in Venezuela

North American oil prices climbed by more than one per cent on Monday following the upheaval in Venezuela over the weekend, while stock prices of some large Canadian oil and gas companies have fallen.

A barrel of West Texas Intermediate, the North American benchmark, was trading about 1.5 per cent higher by midday, up nearly $1 to just over $58 US. Prices remain relatively cheap and are about $15 lower than compared to one year ago.

Meanwhile, several Canadian oil and gas companies are taking a hit to their stock price. The Toronto Stock Exchange’s energy index was down about 4.5 per cent by midday Monday.

The West Can Protect Itself from Terrorism and Urban Violence

The “good” news about the Islamic terrorism and domestic urban violence that have rocked Western nations in recent months is that the attacks were foreseeable—and thus preventable. The bad news is that the fear of being called “racist” will stymie many governments’ ability to act on that foresight.

The December 14 massacre at Sydney’s Bondi Beach is the latest in a grim series of Islamist attacks across Europe, the U.S., and Australia. An Egyptian immigrant and his son opened fire on beachgoers during an annual Hanukkah celebration, killing 15 and wounding another 39.

JD Vance’s ‘home attacker’: Suspect is transgender daughter of wealthy surgeon Democrat donor

The hammer-wielding suspect accused of smashing four windows at Vice President JD Vance’s Ohio home is a transgender woman who enjoyed a luxurious upbringing filled with privilege.

William D DeFoor, 26, was charged early Monday with one count each of obstructing official business, criminal damaging or endangering, criminal trespass and vandalism after an overnight break-in at Vance’s $1.4 million Cincinnati residence.

DeFoor – who is understood to have gone by Davis while attending an elite $27,000 per year Catholic high school – appears to have transitioned to female and now goes by the name Julia.

Former deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland to resign from Parliament … but the grift goes on

Former longtime cabinet minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland says she will resign from Parliament, just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced he’d appointed her as an advisor on economic development.

In September, Freeland was tapped to be Canada’s special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine. At the time, she stepped down from her cabinet position of transport and internal trade minister to take on the new role, but said she’d stay on as an MP.

In light of Freeland’s appointment I think I understand why the Libs are diddling the Foreign Agents Registry – it’ll provide cover

Guess it’s best if she’s working without Canadian scrutiny … h/t Mauser

Good column from Urback – What’s a Canadian MP doing as an adviser for a foreign government?

Chrystia Freeland became the “minister of everything” in Justin Trudeau’s government because of her ostensible good judgment. This never made much sense to observers of her actual performance, which routinely showcased her poor political instincts against a backdrop of poor policy decisions.

Maybe the Chrystia Freeland that emerged at the end of Mr. Trudeau’s tenure – the one that decried “political gimmicks” and urged fiscal restraint – was there all along, hiding behind an obligatory façade of unyielding partisanship. Or perhaps, and what seems more likely, Ms. Freeland’s instincts actually aren’t that great.

When freedom is more valued in the dictatorial East than in the relativistic West

If on September 11, 2001, someone had told us that one day New York would have a Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated mayor, that he would swear his oath on the Qur’an, that as his first act he would repeal the fight against antisemitism and appoint as his chief counsel the lawyer for al‑Qaeda terrorists (including the brother of one of the hijackers who crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon), who would have believed it?

It is early January, 2026, and the world, in its eternal comedy of misunderstandings, is already offering a spectacle that not even the most cynical observer could invent

Canada has to defend this vital part of its infrastructure from America. Here are three steps Mark Carney can take

Prime Minister Carney says we are at a “hinge moment.” He is right. The question is: will we seize it?

Canada is in a period of geopolitical realignment, trade conflict and AI-driven economic upheaval. These forces operate through digital infrastructure, data, platforms and algorithms — most of which are owned and governed by a small number of gargantuan US technology firms.

This is the missing link in our national debate. Big Tech is not just an economic actor; it is now a central vector of American power.

Paris court finds 10 guilty of harassing Brigitte Macron online

A Paris court has found 10 people guilty of online harassment of the French first lady, Brigitte Macron, by posting or reposting malicious comments on social media that claimed falsely that she was a man.

Eight men and two women, aged 41 to 60, including a school sports teacher, an art gallery owner and a publicist, were on Monday given sentences ranging from a compulsory course in understanding online harassment to an eight-month suspended prison sentence. One man, a property developer, who was absent from the trial hearings, was given a six-month prison sentence.

Some were also suspended from accessing the social media platforms on which they had made or reposted the comments.

‘This changes everything’: Here’s how Canada could be impacted by the U.S.’ abduction of Maduro

After the U.S. abducted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a military-raid, there was simultaneous celebration and global outcry.

While many Venezuelans praised the capture of a man widely considered to be an authoritarian ruler — who is being investigated by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity — protesters around the world also denounced the U.S.’s assault.

Cuba in a Panic

Few people are more upset about Nicolás Maduro’s arrest than the descendants of the Fidel Castro regime in Cuba. (Well, except for maybe the Democrats in Congress and other white leftists in the United States.)

Current Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has come out swinging against the Donald Trump administration’s recent actions both in person and on social media. But while he talks a good game about “imperialism,” his demeanor is anything but tough. The man is obviously terrified, and rightfully so.

The curse of Freeland about to strike Ukraine

In “Walt’s predictions for 2026” (WWW 31/12/25), I predicted that no matter how you slice it, the Ukraine is going to get sliced, diced and screwed in whatever “peace settlement” is negotiated this year. Sadly, I must now double down on that call, as it appears from this ayem’s news that the Ukraine is going to screw itself!

Trans gymgoer caught ‘masturbating’ in women’s bathroom at California Planet Fitness

Not the Tranny

Disturbing viral video shows the moment a transgender gymgoer appears to be masturbating in a stall inside the women’s bathroom at a Planet Fitness in California.

Planet Fitness patron Grace Hutson claims she encountered the ordeal while she was using the female restroom at the gym’s Concord location, just outside San Francisco, last May — but the footage only exploded online over the weekend.

Eric Ham: Canada beware, Trump’s Venezuela invasion is a clear warning shot

WASHINGTON – A surprise pre-dawn raid on a sovereign country was the opening salvo by an American strongman hellbent on bringing the world’s most resource-rich nations under U.S. control.

In 2025, Donald Trump tested the reach of his authority, faced down the system of checks and balances and dared the world to push back. Meeting no resistance, the twice-impeached commander-in-chief orchestrated his fait accompli, stealing the world’s largest oil reserves with nary an outcry from the international community.

I think Canada will split apart frankly and given the way we’ve been abused by the Liberal Government this past decade that’s not really such a bad thing.

So long as Trump deports the migrants I’m good.
