What if William Howe, the dithering British commander, hadn’t let the American army escape in the Battle of Long Island in 1776? What if he had nipped the whole damn thing in the bud? In that case, as dual Canadian-American citizen Adam Gopnik complains in the New Yorker, ‘We Could Have Been Canada’.

That’s not exactly a hill to die on, but it’s catnip for other dual nationals such as Malcolm Gladwell, who some years back produced an amusing plea for Canadian World Domination in the Washington Post.

Tom Mulcair: Trudeau has to get serious. The time for bluffing and emoting is over.

SAINT-SAUVEUR, QUEBEC — In the waning days of the campaign, Trudeau went all out to convince voters in the Greater Toronto Area that he was a “progressive,” a term that he hardly ever used to describe himself before.

It was a word intentionally chosen to hive off as many NDP votes as possible especially in Canada’s largest cities. It worked. Trudeau ran the table in the GTA.

Now, it’s put up or shut up time in several key files that help define progressive politics in Canada: women’s rights, climate, justice and minority rights.

The conservatives can hope that Trudeau veers so far left they can attract less crazy Liberals assuming such an animal exists.

Thousands of Australian Workers Are Set to Strike in a United Protest Against “No Jab, No Job” Mandates

A united cross-section of Australian industries is set to strike on October 1 over State-sanctioned, and unconstitutional medical conscription.

While the Australian federal government maintains COVID-19 vaccines are NOT mandatory, in an apparent “workaround” section 51 of the Australian constitution, the Morrison government has enabled the states to make COVID-19 vaccinations compulsory.

China: Big spender or loan shark?

China hands out at least twice as much development money as the US and other major powers, new evidence shows, with most of it coming in the form of risky high-interest loans from Chinese state banks.

The sheer amount of Chinese lending is startling. Not too long ago China received foreign aid, but now the tables have turned.

Over an 18-year period, China has granted or loaned money to 13,427 infrastructure projects worth $843bn across 165 countries, according to the AidData research lab at William & Mary, a university in the US state of Virginia.

Much of this money is linked to Chinese President Xi Jinping’s ambitious Belt and Road strategy. Starting in 2013, it leverages China’s expertise in infrastructure projects, and ample foreign currency, to build new global trading routes.

AUKUS Security Alliance Exposes EU’s Fecklessness

Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States have announced a new tripartite strategic alliance aimed at countering China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. The AUKUS defense agreement, under which Australia will acquire American-designed nuclear-powered submarines, is a welcome paradigm shift intended to enhance the projection of Western military power in the region.

AUKUS will supplement the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (also known as “The Quad”), a military partnership between Australia, India, Japan and the United States aimed at protecting freedom of navigation in the broader Asia-Pacific region. It will also strengthen Five Eyes, an intelligence-sharing alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

‘This is Afghanistan!’ one Taliban fighter shouted while on a pirate ship ride at the fairground found in western Kabul, as his armed comrades cackled and whooped onboard the rickety attraction.

Judge throws out historic female genital mutilation case, calls feds ‘vindictive’

A federal judge on Tuesday threw out the nation’s first female genital mutilation case, delivering a major blow to the prosecution and FGM survivors who had hoped the Detroit case would help end a practice that is still performed on millions of girls worldwide.

In dismissing the four-year-old case, U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman concluded the prosecution was vindictive in seeking new charges against the accused, who had previously convinced the judge to declare the federal FGM ban as unconstitutional.

Like a sitcom in its death throes jumping the proverbial shark, the cancel-culture movement is plunging into a humiliating depth of inanity. This weekend, video emerged from a person called Frederick Joseph, a regular practitioner of “man on the street put-up jobs,” showing a confrontation with a white woman named Emma Sarley.

Sarley supposedly told Joseph, who is black, to “go back to [his] hood.” Or at least that’s what he says. She doesn’t say this on the video.

The familiar fracas ensued: Social-media mobs assembled, and quickly Sarley was fired from her job. But what happened next was a little different.

Ontario recommends Pfizer vaccine over Moderna for ages 18 to 24 due to high incidence of cardio issues

According to data released on Wednesday, the risk of the development of the heart condition is 1 in 5,000 for males aged 18 to 24 following a second dose of Moderna. This was based on more than 96,000 second doses between June 1 and August 7, 2021. For women between 18 to 24, the risk is 1 in 17,000.

In comparison, health officials said the risk was 1 in 28,000 after the second dose of Pfizer.

No One Outside Of China Allowed To Attend 2022 Winter Games In Beijing

The International Olympic Committee said on Wednesday that the only people allowed to attend the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, China, are those who live in China.

“Tickets will be sold exclusively to spectators residing in China’s mainland, who meet the requirements of the COVID-19 countermeasures,” the IOC said.

I’m sick of the Olympics anyway.
