Outcry over South Africa’s multiple husbands proposal
A proposal by the South African government to legalise polyandry – when a woman has more than one husband at the same time – has led to howls of protest from conservative quarters.
This does not surprise Professor Collis Machoko, a renowned academic on the topic.
The objections are “about control,” he told the BBC. “African societies are not ready for true equality. We don’t know what to do with women we cannot control.”

Boy, 11, referred to Prevent counter-radicalisation programme for wanting to give ‘alms to the oppressed’
An 11-year-old primary school pupil was referred to the government’s controversial counter-radicalisation Prevent programme after a teacher mistook the word “alms” for “arms” during a classroom discussion.
The boy’s teacher asked what pupils would do if they found themselves in possession of a lot of money. According to a legal challenge against the school lodged by the boy’s parents, he said he would “give alms to the oppressed”. The teacher interpreted this as “give arms to the oppressed” and made the Prevent referral.
When police received the referral they said there was no substance to it, no sign of radicalisation, extremist views or any threat to national security and closed the case.

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole speculated that he could be the only person running to be prime minister who is proud of Canada – though he says he still wants the country to do “better.”
His comment comes amid multiple communities cancelling their Canada Day celebrations in the wake of an estimated 751 unmarked graves being found at a former Saskatchewan residential school site.
European Parliament Votes to Make EU Climate Neutral by 2050
The European Parliament has formally set a goal to make the entire European Union carbon neutral by 2050.
Members of the European Parliament passed the Climate Act on Thursday in a vote of 442 for, 203 against, and 51 abstentions. The Act also increased the EU’s goal to reduce carbon emissions from 44 per cent of 1990 levels to 55 per cent by 2030.

Before Surfside building collapse, $9 million in repairs needed
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Nearly three years before an oceanfront building collapsed near Miami, an engineering firm estimated that major repairs the building needed would cost more than $9 million, according to newly released emails.
The email from the firm of Morabito Consultants was among a series of documents released by the city of Surfside as rescue efforts continued at the site of the collapsed building, where more than 150 people remained unaccounted for. At least five people were killed in the collapse.
‘They need to be charged’: Federal minister on residential school perpetrators
OTTAWA — Canada’s minister of northern affairs says the religious leaders who operated the residential school system in Canada should be held accountable for any crimes committed.
“Of course they need to be charged. This is the sort of thing you read about in another country, you don’t read about this in Canada, but if people are still alive, then we need to do all things necessary to achieve justice, of course we need to bring charges forward,” said Dan Vandal in an interview on CTV’s Question Period airing Sunday.

Ontario reports 287 new COVID-19 cases; majority are now Delta variant
Ontario reported 287 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, along with 12 new deaths, as the province’s burden of known active cases hit its lowest point since last September.
Ontario reported 346 new cases on Saturday and 256 on Friday.
The seven-day rolling average of new cases now stands at 286, down slightly from 291 yesterday.
U.K. records highest daily COVID-19 cases in months amid Delta Indian variant surge
The U.K. on Saturday recorded its most new coronavirus infections since early February as the National Health Service ran a “grab a jab” initiative to further drive up vaccination rates.
Government figures showed that another 18,270 people tested positive for the virus across the U.K, the highest daily number since February 5. Over the past week, nearly 100,000 have tested positive, around 50% increase up on the week before. That has raised questions over whether lockdown restrictions will end as planned.
So… I got my 2nd shot yesterday at the local mass jab joint.
Had I known better I would have ignored my scheduled appointment and showed up much earlier as they were letting anyone in who showed up.
They only had Moderna on offer. So far so good, I ‘ve experienced none of the expected reactions I had with the Pfizer jab. Not feverish or achy etc.
And my heart hasn’t exploded.
Not yet at any rate. I’m told that’s a good sign.
I am so looking forward to that haircut.
NYPD opens hate crime investigation into vandalism of George Floyd statue at de Blasio’s orders
The police say they are investigating spray paint found on the statue of George Floyd in Brooklyn as a hate crime, according to NBC News. Police say the statue was defaced with the website of “Patriot Front” spray painted in black across its face.
Patriot Front has been labeled by groups like the Southern Poverty Law Centre as “a white nationalist hate group” due to its connections to the Charlottetown “Unite the Right” rally and other incidents.
Air Canada Mobile App Will Soon Allow Travelers To Submit COVID-19 Test Results
Air Canada will soon begin testing a new feature through its mobile app that will allow travelers to digitally manage their COVID-19 test results.
In a press release, the company says its app will allow users to “safely scan, upload and verify” COVID-19 test results so they can more conveniently validate compliance with government health regulations.

Cyber Attacks on Huawei Devices in Canada Spiked After CFO Arrest: Report
According to The Tyee, a 2019 government report found that there was a documented spike in sophisticated cyber attacks originating from Huawei devices on Canadian soil following the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver.
The report in question was commissioned by Public Safety Canada from Clairvoyance Cyber Corp, and was recently acquired by the Institute of Investigative Journalism at Concordia via a freedom of information request.
