Poilievre’s getting traction with his focus on food prices

OTTAWA—Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is good at retail politics. Other parties may decry his slogans and three-word mantras, but a note of caution needs to be sounded.

KISS is the basic mantra of any successful politician. It may sound a little condescending because in long form, it reads ‘keep it simple, stupid’. For marketing reasons, the last ‘s’ needs to be replaced because voters are definitely not stupid.

But a simple message is one that resonates. When Poilievre coined the phrase “Axe the Tax” in relation to carbon pricing, it mattered little that the fiscal instrument was supposed to be a price on pollution.

Trump is the Middle East’s best chance of peace

Negotiators from Hamas, the Israeli government and the United States today arrived in Cairo to thrash out the final details of a peace plan. After many false dawns, an agreement here could bring two years of bloodshed to an end.

According to reports in Israel, a breakthrough came when Trump realised that his one-man fixer Steve Witkoff was out of his depth, and added Jared Kushner to the negotiating team. It might be surprising that Kushner, whose great success in life is marrying Ivanka Trump, could have made the difference in such an intractable situation. Yet he has a greater familiarity with Benjamin Netanyahu, not to mention longstanding business contacts in the Arab world.

Canada Not Seeking Exit From F-35 Deal With US, Defence Procurement Chief Say

Secretary of State for Defence Procurement Stephen Fuhr says it’s unlikely Ottawa will withdraw from its contract with the United States to purchase 16 F-35 fighter jets, because the aircraft are currently under production.

Fuhr told CBC’s Rosemary Barton Live that he doesn’t think Prime Minister Mark Carney will try to get out of the contract for the American-made jets despite comments from former Defence Minister Bill Blair in March that Canada was reconsidering the purchase amid trade tensions with the United States.

MORGAN: The Sixties Scoop saved indigenous children’s lives

The Sixties Scoop refers to a period of a couple decades when the government through social services agencies took thousands of indigenous children from their households and put them into foster care. Many of those children were permanently adopted. As has been the trend lately, every past government action has been retroactively declared to be genocidal and compensation has been demanded. Kids taken in the Sixties Scoop are now referred to as survivors. Those kids are indeed survivors, but not of the government’s action. They are survivors thanks to the government’s action.

‘Nudge’ Has a New Evil Twin: ‘Stochastic Terror’

Antisemitism has grown unchecked in the UK, stoked by a Labour Party trying to retain its relevance with the Muslim vote in British cities. Given the prevailing atmosphere is anyone surprised that a man, euphemistically described as ‘of Syrian descent’, attacked and killed Jews in Manchester on Thursday?

Deputy PM David Lammy accused Nigel Farage of flirting with the Hitler Youth. Sir Keir Starmer accused the Reform leader of racism. From September 1st, it was reported by Reform’s Zia Yusuf, that Farage had had his state-funded personal protection scaled back by 75%.

MAID in Canada: Euthanasia Organ Harvesting ‘Surges’

An American man in late-stage heart failure received a donor heart from a 38-year-old Canadian man with ALS killed earlier this year under that country’s decade-old euthanasia law. It’s the first-ever heart transplant from a Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) donor.

“The case involved a 59-year-old man with rapidly worsening heart failure who wasn’t expected to survive more than a month,” Canada’s National Post reported, and “the time from retrieval to transplant was five hours and 28 minutes.”

The ADL and its “Glossary of Extremism and Hate.”

I Got Sprung

Upon finding out on Tuesday that the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) had deleted its entire “Glossary of Extremism and Hate,” I felt like a convict who has given up all hope of ever getting out of prison suddenly noticing that the door to his cell is unlocked and the guards are gone. For while popular indignation against the far-left defamation group for listing Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA (TPUSA) as an extremist group led the hatemongers to realize that they had gone too far, TPUSA was not the only unjust and unwarranted entry in the “Glossary.” I, for one, was on it, too.

Germany is being terrorised

As Germany commemorates the 35th anniversary of reunification, the contrast with 1990 could not be more stark. Back then, jubilant crowds gathered spontaneously at Brandenburg Gate and atop the crumbling Berlin Wall. Last week’s celebrations still drew many people, but the atmosphere was tainted by fear. In Germany today, one question looms over every public gathering: will we be safe?

How quickly (and dramatically) Canadians lost faith with immigration

For months now, a consistent sentiment has emerged in Canadian opinion polls on immigration: The country has too much of it and it’s causing active harm to the economy. Canadians are even beginning to tell pollsters that they are increasingly distrustful of newcomers.

The country’s turn against immigration comes in the wake of one of the most dramatic reorderings of the immigration system in our history. Over just the last five years, migration into Canada has not only been spiked to all-time highs, but the influx is increasingly composed of newcomers that are young and low-skilled – a noted departure from a system that used to primarily prioritize skills and economic potential.

‘Dirty hippies’ lose 25-year battle to save their homes after their community was deemed a 12-acre bio-hazard

A California commune filled with ‘dirty hippies’ is closing down after losing a 25-year battle with its local government.

The so-called ‘Yee Haw’ commune is a 12-acre makeshift settlement in Trinidad, California, a remote seaside town with a population of about 300 residents.

Its supporters said the commune’s longtime owner Charles Garth provided a makeshift option to combat Trinidad’s steep housing costs. About ten people currently live at the commune.

Reactionary, Neo-Confederate Portland

Portland’s left-wing mobs and officials are waging a neo-Confederate-style rebellion—defying federal law, protecting illegal aliens, and turning the city into a sanctuary for anarchy.

In blue cities across America—Portland, Oregon, especially—often violent protesters now seek to surround ICE facilities to stop federal officers from fulfilling their assigned and legal duties of arresting illegal aliens.

Some 10 million or more illegal aliens were allowed to enter the U.S. during the Biden years—illegally and thus without criminal or health checks.

Conservatives warn bill could let Liberals cut off Canadians’ internet

Conservative MPs are sounding the alarm over a new federal cybersecurity bill, warning it could give cabinet sweeping powers to target ordinary Canadians online without due process.

Blacklock’s Reporter says Bill C-8, An Act Respecting Cybersecurity, would allow cabinet to order telecom providers to cut services to individuals it deems a threat to Canada’s telecommunications system — with orders kept secret and no court oversight.

Federal government will release budgets in the fall instead of the spring: officials

In a break with tradition, federal budgets will now be released in the fall instead of the spring starting this year.

The fall fiscal update, meanwhile, will now be tabled in the spring.

It’s a change that comes less than two weeks after the parliamentary budget officer estimated a sharp increase in the deficit to $68.5 billion.

The federal government has not released a budget since April 2024 under former prime minister Justin Trudeau.
