Pierre Poilievre is eating the NDP’s lunch. Here’s how a new leader can save the party from itself

Recent decades in politics have made us cynical. We rarely trust our politicians to wield power effectively or honestly. Our politicians have responded by making their promises smaller and more boutique, or else giving up their power altogether. Our cynicism has made us lazy and unimaginative.

And so the tools of public policy have, increasingly, become targeted tax cuts and public-private partnerships. The results have been worsening government services and a distinct feeling like Canada can’t build anything anymore.

The NDP don’t know how to make their own lunch.

L.A.’s Entertainment Economy Is Looking Like a Disaster Movie

LOS ANGELES—Brian Mainolfi has been drawing since he came to this city in 1994. The Baltimore native started as an assistant to legendary Looney Tunes animator Chuck Jones, worked on Disney’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Mulan,” and spent a decade on the animated sitcom “American Dad.”

The appeal of the work was simple. “People love cartoons,” he said. “And I love making cartoons.”

Since his last show was canceled in 2024, Mainolfi’s artistic output has been limited to dinosaurs and monsters in his sketchbook. Like thousands of people who work in the entertainment industry, he has become collateral damage of a precipitous slowdown in production. The only work he’s found is teaching an animation class at a Cal State campus three hours away, for $350 a week.

Manchester synagogue attack is the price of normalising antisemitism

As I sit in synagogue this Yom Kippur, the holiest day in our calendar, my heart is heavy with fear and sadness. The sanctuary, usually a place of solace and reflection, now feels like a fragile bubble in a world increasingly hostile to Jews. Today, once again, that bubble was violently pierced.

Fears Quebec Starbucks gang shooting could signal shift to brazen tactics

The brazen daylight killing of a prominent Quebec gang leader inside a suburban Starbucks in the outskirts of Montreal this week could signal a new, more chaotic and brash environment when it comes to organised crime, observers say.

The arrests of alleged senior, older members of Montreal’s mafia in June has potentially left a chasm – meaning newer, younger gangs are attempting to gain a foothold.

Police said at a news conference that they were called to a Starbucks in Laval, Quebec, which is a suburb of Montreal, at about 10.30am on Wednesday because of reports of a shooting inside the coffee shop. One man was killed and two others were injured.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sentenced to only 4 years in prison after salacious trial exposed mogul’s reign of terror

Hip-hop icon Sean “Diddy” Combs was sentenced to more than four years in prison Friday — a paltry term compared to the 11 years sought by prosecutors after a blockbuster, stomach-churning sex crimes trial exposed the mogul’s depraved secrets.

The emotional, nearly six-hour sentencing hearing on prostitution charges in Manhattan federal court closed with Judge Arun Subramanian condemning Combs’ horrific abuse of victims Cassie Ventura and an influencer known as “Jane.”

LILLEY: Eglinton Crosstown continues tradition of missing deadlines

Metrolinx reclaimed by nature

Metrolinx is on its way to missing another deadline.

They said they wanted to start full testing this week of the Eglinton Crosstown and as of Thursday afternoon it hadn’t started. The “revenue-service demonstration,” which runs the system at the same level as if passengers were on, takes at least 30 days.

14 Years and it’s still not open.

STUPID: MSNBC’s Ruhle Tries to Spin Comey Prosecution as Free Speech Assault

Comey – Evil man

On Wednesday night, MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle and her 11th Hour guests cobbled the recent prosecution against former FBI Director James Comey into a larger conspiracy President Trump supposedly has against the First Amendment.

The discussion was based on an NBC News article covering a letter signed by over 40 retired state and federal judges condemning Trump for targeting his political enemies. The letter failed to mention that Comey was indicted over lying to and obstructing the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Trump gives Hamas Sunday deadline to accept Gaza peace plan

US President Donald Trump has given Hamas a deadline to accept a US peace plan for Gaza or face “all hell”.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Friday that an agreement must be reached by 18:00 Washington time (22:00 GMT) on Sunday.

The plan proposes an immediate end to fighting and the release within 72 hours of 20 living Israeli hostages held by Hamas – as well as the remains of hostages thought to be dead – in exchange for hundreds of detained Gazans.

WARMINGTON: Pregnant staffer fired by B.C. Cons for ‘truth’ tweet on Truth and Reconciliation Day

Even at 32 weeks pregnant, a woman doesn’t necessarily have free speech in Canada.

Is it worse to post a tweet with one’s opinion on Truth and Reconciliation Day or fire a pregnant staffer for posting it? This is the dilemma the Conservative Party of British Columbia is facing.

It’s like there’s a Doug Fordization of Conservatism in Canada.

Step 1 – Lie about being Conservative.
Step 2 – Get elected at minimum as Party Leader
Step 3 – Come out as a Flaming Liberal Asshat.

My ultra-woke daughter attacked me for my politics despite all I’ve done for her. Now it’s time to reveal a few home truths, says no-nonsense GOP lawmaker

For most of her life, Maddie Block was a daddy’s girl – at least, her dad thought so.

Her childhood was marked by Mediterranean cruises, European vacations and the comfort of a spacious family home in New Mexico.

When the time came for college, her Air Force veteran father, Jay Block, now a Republican state senator, didn’t hesitate to pay the bill, even emptying his military benefits to cover the cost.

Largest Meth Seizure in New Zealand History Arrived in Maple Syrup Bottles From Vancouver

AUCKLAND — Three men were sentenced in Auckland’s High Court this week for their role in receiving the largest methamphetamine seizure ever recorded at New Zealand’s border, which arrived from Vancouver’s port concealed in maple syrup bottles. Customs officers intercepted 713.8 kilograms of the drug in January 2023, enough for roughly 35 million doses and calculated to equate to NZ$800 million in drug harms. The shipment, stacked on 18 pallets and disguised as four-litre syrup jugs, was routed through a global node for Chinese chemical precursor trafficking and synthetic drug production.
