Germany’s draft revival prompts surge in conscientious objectors

When the recruiting sergeants came to mobilise Odysseus for the siege of Troy, the guileful king of Ithaca feigned madness, driving his plough back and forth across a beach and seeding it with grains of salt.

In decades gone by, Germany’s draft dodgers and conscientious objectors resorted to an array of similarly inventive ruses, from faking chronic illness to devising long autobiographical texts on the roots of their pacifism.

Now, as the government prepares to bring back a small-scale form of national service, the old boxes of tricks are being dusted off.

Pierre Poilievre’s call to scrap the temporary foreign worker program marks new, tougher stance for Conservatives

OTTAWA—Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on Mark Carney’s Liberals to ditch the federal government’s decades-old temporary foreign worker program, taking a harder stance against a program he’s previously said should be reduced, not axed outright.

The reason why, Poilievre said Wednesday, is because of worsening youth unemployment, rather than a Liberal-induced “immigration crisis” he has claimed has weakened both the economy and security of the country.

“The individual temporary foreign workers, the workers themselves, they are not bad people. They are not the problem. They are being taken advantage of by Liberal corporate leaders who want to use them to drive down wages,” Poilievre said at a news conference in Mississauga.

Abbey – Abbeynormal

Deranged transgender Minnesota shooter Robin Westman had recently dumped his longtime girlfriend, who was reportedly a “furry” — describing the ex as the “root of my suffering” in a twisted manifesto.

The 23-year-old maniac, who slaughtered two children and injured 18 other people at a Minneapolis Catholic school, had only recently called it quits with his partner of several years before last week’s bloodshed, his dad previously revealed.

Migrant crisis: How Europe went from Merkel’s ‘We can do it’ to pulling up the drawbridge

The day they appeared he could hardly believe his eyes. Small boat after small boat bearing in from the Turkish side. “I have so many memories that are coming back to me now,” says Paris Louamis, 50, a hotelier on the Greek island of Lesbos. “There were people from Syria, Afghanistan, many countries.”

This was August 2015 and Europe was witnessing the greatest movement in population since the end of the Second World War. More than a million people would arrive in the EU over the next few months driven by violence in Syria, as well as Afghanistan and Iraq and elsewhere.

I witnessed the arrivals on Lesbos and met Paris Laoumis as he was busy helping exhausted asylum seekers near his hotel. “I am proud of what we did back then,” he tells me. Along with international volunteers he provided food and clothing to those arriving.

With rare exceptions such as Hungary and Poland the elites across Europe should be tried for what amounted to a sinister act of treason.

African Velvet Touch Refugee

An “African Ancestral Acknowledgement” in city staff email signatures? They are now included as part of the opening statement before meetings at City Hall and one plays on a loop at Yonge-Dundas Square, the place city officials want us to call Sankofa Square.

Daniel Tate of Integrity TO, a City Hall watchdog group recently raised the alarm about the email practice.

This is just the latest effort by City Hall to express it’s contempt for White Canadians.

‘Out of control’: Witnesses describe fatal Lisbon funicular crash

It was just after 18:00 on Wednesday when a carriage on Lisbon’s famous Gloria funicular careened around the bend of a steep cobblestoned street, crashed into a building, and crumpled, eyewitnesses said.

The carriage “lost control”, descending at full speed and crashing on its side, Helen Chow, who was at the base of the hill, told the BBC.

It sounded like a bomb, she said, followed by “complete scary silence… There was pitch black smoke. Once it dissipated, you saw exactly what happened.”
