John Robson: How ‘Rule of the Expert’ Is Displacing Genuine Self-Government in Canada

From sea to shining C-minus, the authorities do not trust Canadians, and we trust them not to. Nova Scotia banned walking in the woods lest we dunces set the place ablaze with incandescent hiking boots, while Vancouver banned teaching your own kid to swim in city pools. Welcome to government of the expert, by the expert, for the expert.

It’s a dangerous convergence of bog-standard public-sector arrogance with a general modern attitude of Machbarkeit, the notion that anything developed through trial-and-error, human or even evolutionary, can be done better by experts using abstract logic and linear algebra. Hence, meat from factories, or the bizarre recent item saying “Scientists Create ‘Living’ Material That Sucks Carbon Dioxide From The Air.”

Inspectors admit Canadians losing jobs to black market in migrant permits

Canadians are losing jobs and wages to a black market in migrant worker permits, federal inspectors have confirmed, admitting abuse is widespread and tied to illegal recruitment schemes.

A June 18 labour department briefing note said permits are being bought and sold while vulnerable foreign workers are exploited for profit. Officials warned the scheme involves “a range of players both domestically and internationally.”

Violence Is The Logical And Desired Outcome Of Leftists’ Trans Victim Narrative

The horrific Annunciation Catholic School shooting in Minneapolis, Minnesota, became the latest act of violence perpetrated by an individual claiming to be transgender. The FBI confirmed the “shooter has been identified as Robin Westman, a male born as Robert Westman.” Victimhood narratives always end in violence, making grievance politics a precursor to atrocities ranging from mass shootings to genocide.

The left sells this oppressor/oppressed narrative to its constituents — including and especially the so-called trans community, but this community stands out for one important reason: they are uniquely prone to irrational behavior as gender dysphoria is a mental disorder.

A European ‘reassurance force’ in Ukraine is a fantasy

Ever since Donald Trump returned to the White House, a key question has been what kind of support the US would continue to provide to Ukraine. Surprisingly for some, the US President has broadly followed Joe Biden’s strategy of giving Kyiv the weapons and ammunition it requests.

Two weeks ago, European leaders claimed that Trump  — reversing his previous stance — promised to contribute to a European “reassurance force” for postwar Ukraine. This week, White House officials told the Financial Times that Washington would provide “US aircraft, logistics and ground-based radar supporting and enabling a European-enforced no-fly zone and air shield for the country”. But will this really materialise?

Farage and migrants – the gentleman IS for turning

THIS week I reported in TCW on Reform UK’s new manifesto for national security and justice, announced on Tuesday. I observed problems in the party’s messaging, even before the mainstream media misrepresented it. I noted contradictions with the party’s prior positions. I noted that Reform was adopting positions already proposed by erstwhile members Rupert Lowe (Restore Britain) and Ben Habib (Advance UK) without admitting it.

Well, as soon as Wednesday, Nigel Farage was backtracking. He had said in a prior interview and at the launch on the Tuesday that immigrant children present a ‘difficult and complicated issue’, but confirmed that all illegals would be deported. Meanwhile Zia Yusuf, the party’s lead for government efficiency, said young men would be prioritised for deportation, while women and children would be deported in the second half of the five-year programme.

Never believe a word Farage says especially concerning Islam and remigration.

The British establishment pushes back against the Scottish lass narrative UPDATED

The story of the Scottish lass arrested for brandishing a knife and axe in the face of a migrant who was apparently threatening and taunting her swept through the West. This bold young woman symbolized the fighting spirit of those who are sick and tired of having their governments flood their countries with hostile Muslim migrants who act like conquerors, entitled to lodging, food, and rape. After a day or so of stunned silence, though, the British establishment has struck back with a story of an innocent Bulgarian couple threatened and taunted by a crazed teen.

The question, then, is where does the truth lie? For those who have seen the British government’s hostility to the Britons, the answer seems clear.

Conrad Black: A fragile federation awaits Carney’s green assault

Prime Minister Mark Carney is enjoying a honeymoon in the polls, as all incoming leaders deserve. Less comprehensible are the celebrations that are quite audibly in progress about all that he is accomplishing. I have even seen adulatory references to his “first hundred days,” and favourable comparisons with the beginning of the administration of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933 when he saved the collapsed financial system and reopened the banks and stock and commodity exchanges and set up the workfare programs that provided public works and conservation jobs for the 30 per cent of the population that was without work and received no federal assistance. Obviously, we do not have a similar state of urgency in Canada today. Nor do we have a government that as far as I can see has actually done anything except announce one or two good personnel appointments and proclaim a readiness in principle to expedite some large unspecified projects.

Dental nurse receives £25,000 payout after co-worker ‘repeatedly’ rolled his eyes at her

Rolling your eyes at a work colleague could amount to bullying and a breach of employment laws, a tribunal has ruled.

A dental nurse has been awarded £25,000 for constructive dismissal after a fellow worker made the gesture whenever she spoke to her.

The panel found that Maureen Howieson was subjected to ‘rude, isolating, bullying and belittling’ behaviour by Jisna Iqbal, which amounted to multiple breaches of her contract.

The Myth of the Racist, Transphobic Toddlers

Are British schools experiencing an epidemic of racism? Are classrooms filled with little budding neo-Nazis? Are four-year-olds unleashing a regime of bigoted terror upon their non-white classmates?

Not quite. Although, this is what the statistics would have you believe. According to official figures, the number of children being sent home from school for racism has more than doubled in the last three years. In 2021, there were 7,400 suspensions for racist behaviour. In 2024, there were over 15,000. Nearly 2,500 of those cases took place within primary schools, where children are no older than 11. Some reports even involve pupils from reception, where children are aged just four or five.

HANNAFORD: Nietzsche’s toxic empathy — Canada’s ruling class loses its grip on reality

‘From shielding violent offenders from deportation to calling mothers “birthing persons,” toxic empathy causes our elites to confuse moral vanity with sound judgment.’

It’s great to be fair.

But it is possible to be so fair-minded that you become an idiot. Unfortunately, in our woke dominion, that kind of idiocy defines our ruling elites.

Take the judge who gave an immigrant a reduced sentence, so that he wouldn’t be deported. That was too much even for another judge. As Calgary Nose Hill MP Michelle Rempel Garner tells the story in the Western Standard, “The B.C. Court of Appeal ruled last week that a lower court judge gave too light a punishment because the attacker risked deportation.”

Canada is strengthening defence ties with Finland and Sweden. What can they teach us?

To find Western Europe’s largest artillery practice range, you have to head north — far north.

Rovajärvi lies just above the Arctic Circle, outside the town of Rovaniemi, in Finnish Lapland. And in late May, as young conscripts complete their final weeks of training on firing artillery cannons, it’s cold enough for the soldiers to bundle up in thick gloves and neck warmers.

Finnish conscript Iivari Luukari has been training for months on these howitzers, which are identical to those currently used in Europe’s bloodiest conflict since the Second World War.

Europe in the Balance?

Europe faces a breaking point as illegal migration, welfare strain, energy crises, and defense demands collide with shrinking populations and stagnant economies.

Almost weekly in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and Germany, a sensational assault committed by an illegal migrant—often enjoying some sort of state support or with prior arrests for the same crime—surfaces.

Until recently, European politicians and the media sought to either ignore such news or accuse those who clamored for tighter borders, more police protection, and stiffer penalties of being “racists” or “xenophobes.”

Until recently, that is.
