The belief in the right to self-defence – and the legal limits of a reasonable response

In 2011, on the federal election campaign trial, Stephen Harper’s Conservatives promised Canadians “the right to defend their property.” The next year, after his party won a majority government, Mr. Harper rewrote Canada’s law on self-defence.

The previous version, dating back to the Liberals in 2003, stated that anyone who is unlawfully assaulted, without provocation, was “justified in repelling force by force” – but no more than necessary. The response also could not be intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm.

Mr. Harper’s version, in the current Criminal Code, is more permissive: If a person reasonably believes force is being used against them or another person, or if they believe there’s the threat of force, their response is legal as long as it is “reasonable in the circumstances.”

Despite boycott, Canadians poured record $50B into US securities at height of trade war

Canadians might be boycotting American products over the trade war and avoiding travel to the US — but their investment portfolios are snapping up red, white and blue stocks at an “unprecedented rate.”

They poured an eye-popping $50 billion into US securities at the height of the 2025 trade war — the most since at least 1990.

“Canadian investors have opted to load up on US financial assets since President Trump was sworn in,” Warren Lovely, managing director of National Bank Financial in Toronto, wrote in a recent report, noting the pace has been “unprecedented.”

Are Progressives Headed Toward Demographic Oblivion?

Would anyone be surprised if they were? After all, progressives have spent decades championing abortion at all phases of pregnancy right up to birth — and sometimes immediately after. Over the last decade, they have taken up the Queer Movement’s transgender campaign and demanded pediatric sex-change therapies that leave adolescents neutered for life. Their climate-change agenda emphasizes the need for population reversal and rails over the insult to Gaia that human procreation creates.

They’re not exactly kid-friendly, in other words. But don’t just rely on instincts and political posturing on this question, because actual data shows that progressives practice what they preach.  Financial Times analyst John Burn-Murdoch reviews the results of a study on declining birth rates in the developed world, including the US, and the impact of political ideology on procreation. While those rates are declining in all categories, they are collapsing among progressives.

In the Wake of Another Public Shooting

Now big media wants to identify a transgender person by their birth gender.

WASHINGTON — In the wake of the public shootings of strangers, especially when innocent children are the victims, there are lies that we tell ourselves and true things some dare not say.

Two children were killed, and 18 other people were injured in the Wednesday mass shooting at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. A Minnesota Star Tribune headline got it right: “This is evil.”

I’ll tell you the phrase that no longer works: “We have to do something so that this never happens again.” It is the chant most often heard after these senseless slaughters. It does not and cannot ward off the evil in this world. It only serves to showcase how helpless adults feel in the aftermath.

Civil rights groups alarmed over Quebec’s move to ban ̷p̷r̷a̷y̷e̷r̷ Islamist intimidation tactics in public

Quebec says it will ban prayer in public, a move that civil rights groups described as an “alarming measure” that targets religious minority groups and would infringe on “basic democratic freedoms”.

The province’s secularism minister, Jean-François Roberge, said the move had been prompted by the “proliferation of street prayer” which he described as “a serious and sensitive issue” adding that the government had watched with “unease”. Roberge said the government would introduce legislation in the fall.

The announcement follows public statements from Quebec’s premier, François Legault, who expressed mounting frustration over public prayers in the province’s largest city, Montreal.

Why do people fall for Islamist BS? They are complicit useful idiots that’s why.

Why Iran’s Ideology and Missiles Endanger the West: If Hitler Had Nuclear Weapons, Do You Think He Would Not Have Used Them?

Death To Israel Missile Iran

Recent remarks by a senior Iranian official, Amir Hayat-Moqaddam, a member of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, once again confirmed what many in the West have feared: the Islamic Republic of Iran’s grand strategy has always included targeting not only Israel and its neighbors but also Europe and the United States.

In his latest statement, Hayat-Moqaddam openly declared that Iran is capable of striking all of Europe and even US cities such as Washington and New York with missiles launched from offshore Iranian ships.

Attempt to partner African countries with Japanese cities triggers xenophobic backlash

An attempt to promote friendship between Japan and countries in Africa has transformed into a xenophobic row about migration after inaccurate media reports suggested the scheme would lead to a “flood of immigrants”.

The controversy erupted after the Japan International Cooperation Agency, or JICA, said this month it had designated four Japanese cities as “Africa hometowns” for partner countries in Africa: Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana and Tanzania.

The programme, announced at the end of an international conference on African development in Yokohama, will involve personnel exchanges and events to foster closer ties between the four regional Japanese cities – Imabari, Kisarazu, Sanjo and Nagai – and the African nations.

Canada’s largest private landlord often dramatically increases eviction applications after acquiring buildings, study finds

Mosqueteria Land -Thorncliffe Park Toronto

A 57-unit apartment building in Scarborough had only seen two eviction applications over the course of nine years under the ownership of one landlord.

Then in 2018, Starlight Investments purchased the building and, in just over a year, filed 29 eviction applications — increasing the rate of filings more than 10,000 per cent, a recent study revealed.

Starlight Investments “is, in some ways, leading the charge” in transforming multi-family housing stock, said Martine August, a professor of planning in Waterloo’s faculty of environment and the co-author of a recent study on Toronto landlords’ behaviour around eviction.

Would this be getting the same attention if the land of the Mosqueteria was not affected?

Guy wonders if NDP too crazy to be elected …

Former NDP staffer Cam Holmstrom says New Democrats need a moderate leader who can ‘counterbalance’ the further-left bent of the party and speak to Canadians’ everyday issues.

A defeated NDP means labour, progressive movements have to ‘fill that void,’ says CUPE head Hancock

In the wake of a weakened NDP, progressive groups and labour movements need to be louder in their push back against Prime Minister Mark Carney, says Canadian Union of Public Employees national president Mark Hancock, and one national progressive movement is taking up the call, protesting what one organizer is calling the “very dangerous expansion of Trump-like policies in Canada.”

The Transgender Movement is a Violent Cult

Robert Westman. Otherwise known as “Robin.” Does that name ring a bell? He was the hate-filled, anti-Christian transgendered coward who murdered three children and three adults at the Covenant School in Nashville. For years, Nashville law enforcement and the court system conspired to keep the shooter’s 100-plus pages of writings under lock and key, until the FBI released them earlier this year.
