Victims of killer self-driving Tesla on autopilot get a huge payout after four-year legal battle

A Miami jury has found Tesla was partly responsible for the 2019 crash of a self-driving vehicle that killed a woman and left her boyfriend badly injured to the tune of $240million in damages.

Naibel Benavides Leon, 22, died after a Tesla Model S slammed in to her and boyfriend Dillon Angulo, then 27, in 2019.

The couple had pulled over to look at the stars at the side of a road near Key Largo, Florida, when they were struck by the vehicle after driver George McGee took his eye off the road to reach for his phone.

Is the tradition of giving party leaders a free pass to the House dead?

Political parties won’t be giving Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre a free ride back into the House of Commons — seemingly ignoring a parliamentary tradition that dates back decades.

But the convention of political parties standing aside to allow seatless party leaders an easy path to the House — known as “leadership courtesy” — hasn’t been consistently applied.

Former Alberta MP Damien Kurek vacated his seat in Battle River-Crowfoot to give Poilievre a chance to rejoin the House of Commons after the Conservative leader lost his longtime Carleton riding in April’s general election.

What did we get for 100,000 new federal civil servants?

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) released an analysis this week of just what the Liberal government’s pursuit of government savings might mean for the federal public service — i.e., first and foremost, significant job cuts. The left-wing think tank estimates 57,000 total jobs might be shed by 2028, and focuses in particular on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Employment and Social Development, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Trump to deploy two nuclear submarines after Russian ‘provocations’

President Trump has ordered the deployment of two American nuclear submarines in response to “foolish and inflammatory” threats from a former president of Russia.

The US president accused Dmitry Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, of making “highly provocative statements”.

“I have ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

Five things now pricier in Canada due to tariffs

The trade war between the US and Canada has escalated sharply with President Donald Trump increasing the tariff rate on Canadian imports from 25% to 35%.

Most goods will avoid the increased costs entering the US market because they are currently exempted under an existing North American trade treaty. But some key products are being hit hard.

Earlier this year Canada responded with counter-tariffs of its own on tens of billions of dollars worth of American products, ranging from tomato ketchup to washing machines

Trump didn’t chicken out. So what’s Canada’s next move?

Canada has now learned that the derisive acronym TACO — often slapped on U.S. President Donald Trump — is inaccurate and needs to be tweaked to something more like “Trump (Almost) Always Chickens Out.”

Despite putting decidedly lower tariffs than he’d threatened on dozens of countries around the globe and giving Mexico a 90-day reprieve from his threat to raise its tariff rate, Trump singled out Canada for an increase.

While there’s no way that Canada can characterize what happened as a win, there’s plenty of evidence that it’s not a reason for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government to panic and do something that jeopardizes what really matters for the Canadian economy: tariff-free access to the U.S. for the vast majority of exports.

Not For Andrew Coyne’s Eyes

It’s a good US rant against the Canadian Weasel Class though some claims are dubious such as that made against our exit from the Afghanistan debacle but overall it will resonate.

Doug Ford says things that Mark Carney can’t as Donald Trump’s trade war escalates

Doug Ford says the quiet part out loud.

The loquacious Ontario premier has always been quotable, but rarely more so than when he’s railing against U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade attack on Canada.

Helpfully playing the bad cop to partner Mark Carney‘s good cop, Ford, as a subnational leader, can get away with saying things the prime minister cannot.

The secret Labour plot to silence migrant hotel critics

Emails sent by the Government’s National Security and Online Information Team (NSOIT) during last year’s Southport riots have been obtained by a US congressional committee.

Transgender serial sex offender gets indefinite sentence after TMU attack. Judge ‘alarmed’ by transfer to female jail

A Toronto judge has designated a repeat sex offender as dangerous and handed down an indefinite prison sentence — while expressing concern that the prisoner, who identifies as transgender, was granted a transfer to a women’s detention facility.

In a sentencing decision released last week, Ontario Court Justice Brock Jones said he was “alarmed” to learn that Charles Waddling-Leeson had been moved to a provincial women’s detention facility after starting a gender transition from male to female while in custody.
