Britain’s anti-asylum seeker hotel protests escalated today as an unauthorised “antifascist” demonstration led to clashes with police. The original protest, organised by opponents of migrant housing at the Thistle City Barbican Hotel, remained peaceful. But tensions flared when a masked group in black suddenly flooded the road outside, clashing with police and prompting multiple arrests.

By 11am, locals were already gathering for the 1:30pm anti-migrant protest. A group of older women sitting at a table told me they were attending “because it’s not safe anymore”. Gesturing toward the hotel windows, where asylum seekers peered down at the scene below, one woman recalled, “Four years ago there was no problem when it was one to a room. Now there are too many.”

Freeland tells MPs she was ‘dismayed’ by BC Ferries’ Chinese ship deal

Transport Minister Chrystia Freeland told MPs Friday she was “dismayed” by BC Ferries’ decision to purchase four new electric-diesel ships from a Chinese shipbuilder using a $1 billion federal loan — but did not call for the loan’s cancellation.

The House of Commons transport committee launched a study of the Canada Infrastructure Bank loan on Friday.

At the meeting, committee members voted in favour of a motion calling on the Canada Infrastructure Bank, BC Ferries and the federal government to show the committee several documents — including the complete bond purchase agreement and records of all options for the acquisition of the new vessels — by the end of August.

Don’t be surprised if Canadians never find out someone was getting their palms greased.

Ukraine uncovers drone procurement corruption scheme

Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies uncovered a major graft scheme in the procurement of military drones and electronic warfare equipment, two days after their independence was restored in a humiliating U-turn for Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Ukrainian president had pushed through a controversial bill that removed the autonomy of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (Nabu) and the Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (Sapo), placing them under the control of the General Prosecutor’s Office, which is led by Zelensky loyalists and mistrusted by many Ukrainians.

Carney’s shift on Palestinian statehood would not have happened as quickly under Trudeau, insiders say

The files of data it holds on most of the world’s population — even those without Facebook accounts — underlie the personalised advertising which is Meta’s main source of income. And this is key to the “personal” bit of Personal Superintelligence.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that his decision is unequivocally appalling to any defenders of democracy, human rights, and The Good, Carney’s recent comments are not at all surprising or even unexpected.
