‘Black-mandated’ homeless shelter on way, City Hall confirms

Toronto officials are taking applications until Friday for city council’s new “Black-mandated” shelter, where everyone from employees to the homeless could be excluded on the basis of race.

City Hall has also decreed that experience in running a shelter is not a requirement for those submitting applications.

What a shithole.

Trump Tariffs Ruled Illegal by Federal Judicial Panel

The U.S. Court of International Trade said the president had overstepped his authority in imposing his “reciprocal” tariffs globally, as well as levies on Canada and Mexico.

A panel of federal judges on Wednesday blocked President Trump from imposing some of his steepest tariffs on China and other U.S. trading partners, finding that federal law did not grant him “unbounded authority” to tax imports from nearly every country around the world.

The ruling, by the U.S. Court of International Trade, delivered an early yet significant setback to Mr. Trump, undercutting his primary leverage as he looks to pressure other nations into striking trade deals more beneficial to the United States.

Appeals are being filed, Judges are not elected President.

King Charles’s visit to Canada was a show of weakness, not strength

Ever since Donald Trump began issuing threats about absorbing Canada, Canadians have been unusually rattled and resolute. In our hour of peril, we thought leaders from around the world would stand up for our country – and especially, King Charles III.

Why Charles? It’s not only because he is Canada’s sovereign, which has certain obligations. It’s that Mr. Trump admires him. Had Charles uttered something definitive in response to Mr. Trump’s rhetoric, that might have deterred the President. The King did not.

WARMINGTON: A near pro-Hamas riot at Casa Loma results in charges

When Jewish Torontonians are forced to face Nazi salutes and antisemitic taunts, the city takes on the appearance of having fallen prey to Hamas sympathizers.

What happened outside of Casa Loma, at Davenport and Spadina Rds., Tuesday night was ugly and leaves a stench on Toronto.

Douglas Murray Is Too Worried About Decorum To Say What Needs To Be Said

I remember a couple of decades ago encountering an assessment of Ann Coulter by a prominent conservative pundit who summed up her contribution to the conservative movement at that time as a net loss. This opinion apparently stemmed from a distaste for Coulter’s style, which quite a few on the right found sufficiently abrasive as to consider it damaging to the cause.

I suppose a person who takes on problems with a sledgehammer is a bit of an irritant to those who’d prefer a softer approach. A blunt, no-holds-barred style of public discourse, when combined with a keen intelligence and massive amounts of research, does increase the unfortunate likelihood of change to the status quo.

A Poilievre insider on the Conservative message

Here’s Ben Woodfinden, who had a senior role in the extraordinarily successful Conservative campaign. Wait a minute — successful? Sure, depending on how you count it. The Conservatives increased their seat count by 24, more than any other party (easy enough since only the Liberals also increased their seat count.) They won their largest share of the popular vote since Brian Mulroney’s 1988 Progressive Conservatives, the largest vote share since the founding of the current, post-2003 Conservative Party of Canada, and a larger popular-vote share than Stephen Harper or Justin Trudeau ever won in three election victories each, including their majority governments.

Dr. Doolittle world: Democrats spend $20 million to learn to ‘grunt and squeak and squawk’ to ordinary American voters

Democrats used to be the party of ordinary American voters, the working class, and the blue-collar crowd. Now, though, as Democrat policies become an increasingly unhinged amalgam of economic and social Marxism, normal Americans are so mysterious to them that Democrats are investing big bucks to learn how to talk to Americans…just as an anthropologist might learn how to use sign language to speak with an ape.

Four in 10 British Pakistanis think first-cousin marriage should be legal

Almost one in 10 Britons believe marriage between first cousins should be legal, according to new polling. The figures, published today by YouGov, show that while 9% of adults nationwide think cousin marriage should remain legal, this proportion rises to 39% within the British Pakistani and British Bangladeshi communities.

While marriage between first cousins is currently legal in the UK, in December Conservative MP Richard Holden called for the practice to be banned. Parliament is currently reviewing his proposed legislation, with the bill’s second reading planned for July. Holden has argued that the offspring produced by first-cousin marriages are roughly twice as susceptible to birth defects, and that a ban should be enforced for the sake of public health and women’s freedom.

O Canada! King Charles visits a realm that ain’t as glorious and free as it used to be.

King Charles’s big day on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, May 27, began with a welcome by four First Nations men in native costume. They sat in a semicircle around a huge drum and banged on it with sticks while wailing loudly. A war chant? Who knows? It did seem to be right out of an old Western — the Indians getting themselves all revved up just before leaping on their horses, tomahawks in hand, to take on the palefaces. Through it all, Charles and Camilla stood there like a couple of chumps, he with a dozen or so shiny medals pinned to his chest, her in a wide-brimmed hat not unlike the one Melania wore to the inauguration.

Are aliens trying to contact Earth? Scientists are BAFFLED by a mysterious cosmic object emitting radio waves AND X-rays

In the dark realms of space, about 14,700 light-years away from our planet, an unusual object is doing something unexpected.

A cosmic entity called ASKAP J1832-0911 is emitting joint pulses of radio waves and X-rays for two minutes every 44 minutes.

This is the first time an object like this, called a long-period transient (LPT), has been detected emitting X-rays.

The Peasants’ War: Why Germany’s Elite Fear the Past

Some historical events possess such enduring power that they continue to haunt our imagination and fears centuries later. The German Peasants’ War, brutally suppressed in May 1525, is one such event. Involving at least a hundred thousand people—probably many more—it was, as British-Australian historian Lyndal Roper observed, “the greatest popular uprising in western Europe before the French Revolution.” The rebellion spread from what is today southern Germany across Austria, Switzerland, France, and Hungary. The peasants’ famous Twelve Articles—formally titled “The Just and Fundamental Articles of All the Peasantry and Tenants of Spiritual and Temporal Powers by Whom They Think Themselves Oppressed”—demanded nothing less than ”Freyheit“ (Freedom).

HANNAFORD: Carney thinks Canada is a country, now he must convince the West

In this much, Mark Carney is different from his predecessor. He thinks Canada is a country with a defining identity.

Regardless of what so many Albertans may feel about independence for Alberta or Saskatchewan today, Justin Trudeau’s cringeworthy New York Times interview ten years ago left us, well… cringing. Canada, he said, was the world’s “first post-national state,” and seemed pleased with the thought. He added for good measure, “There is no core identity, no mainstream in Canada.”

Eric Lombardi: Canada can no longer afford to be governed by luxury beliefs

Canada is no longer the world-leading developed country it once was.

We still talk like one, and identify as one. But when you look at how long it takes to build a subway, what it costs to add a housing unit, or how little economic progress we’ve made per person over the last decade, the truth is obvious: we are in decline. The systems that once delivered rising prosperity no longer function in practice—they now produce delay, contradiction, and paralysis.
