The Crown broke a promise to First Nations. It could now owe billions.

Criminal colonizer cis-gendered white males

Patricia Tangie’s ancestors thought they had a deal.

More than 170 years ago, before Canada confederated in 1867, Indigenous people in what’s now Northern Ontario signed treaties, ceding a vast territory north of Lake Superior and Lake Huron to the Crown in exchange for a promise: that the wealth flowing from the land would be shared with them.

“The distinction between Hamas and “ordinary” Palestinians is largely spurious.”

The west’s lethal error in the war against Israel

In the current war in the Middle East, it’s a given that a distinction must be drawn between Hamas and the “ordinary” Palestinian Arab residents of Gaza.

This distinction, however, is largely spurious.

An article in The Washington Free Beacon that drew upon interviews given to Israeli TV by freed hostages has confirmed that ordinary Gazans were deeply involved in the Oct. 7 pogrom and subjected the hostages to cruelty, abuse and starvation.

Here’s where some Trudeau Liberals say they’ve gone wrong — and how the party can turn it around

OTTAWA — Apparently, being Liberal isn’t as fun as it used to be.

Sean Casey, the long-serving MP for Charlottetown, will admit that. And how could he deny it? One glance at the polls would make any Grit cringe. Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives — whom many Liberals disdain as their ideological opposites — are threatening to unseat them. And Casey has picked up on public fatigue with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which he sees as the predictable result of grievances accumulated through eight years in power.

Even so, to Liberals like Casey, it is too early for defeatism.

Squad member Jamaal Bowman says he wants all 42 million black Americans to get $333,000 in slave reparations

A New York lawmaker is calling for every black person in the US to receive $333,000 as reparations for slavery.

Jamaal Bowman is among nine backers of federal bill H.R. 414, which states there is a ‘moral and legal obligation’ to make restitution to the descendants of slaves.

The legislation would force the government to distribute $14 trillion between almost 42 million black Americans.

Douglas Todd: Ottawa insider warns about immigrant-investor schemes

“The strange story of Vancouver” is the name of an internal immigration department memo that reveals the many things wrong with Canada’s earlier business-investor programs. That hasn’t stopped Ottawa from expanding a related scheme.

An adviser within Canada’s immigration department is warning about the dangers of entry programs that favour entrepreneurs, given the failure of earlier initiatives.

The internal cautions come at the same time the immigration department, which has been under fire from top bank economists for damaging the economy by bringing in a record 1.25 million permanent and temporary residents in a year, is expanding another program that gives preference to would-be entrepreneurs.

Hamas Friendly Liberal and NDP MPs returned from the West Bank with a message for Justin Trudeau

OTTAWA — When the Israel-Hamas war hit the 100-day mark, a group of Canadian MPs and organizations had just embarked on a trip to Jordan and the West Bank with one goal in mind: to bear witness to the ripples of the conflict, and to tell Ottawa what they had seen.

Now, five MPs — two Liberals and three New Democrats — are wrapping up a weeklong visit to the Middle East that included meetings with Palestinians in refugee camps and Israeli settlements, Canadian diplomatic representatives, United Nations agencies and progressive Israeli organizations.

UK: School that barred student from displaying Palestinian flag may be forced to close after receiving ‘arson and bomb threats’

Primary school engulfed in Palestine flag row may be forced to close

A primary school in east London may have to close its doors and switch to online learning after receiving “arson and bomb threats” during a row over a Palestinian flag.

A video shared on TikTok last year claimed that an eight-year-old pupil at Barclay Primary School in Leyton was bullied by teachers for wearing a badge showing the Palestinian flag on his coat.

The school said it was forced to close early for Christmas because of “escalating threats against staff” after rumours spread online that teachers had “traumatised” the boy.

Randall Denley: Olivia Chow has the Trudeau Liberals in a tight corner — for now

The city of Toronto’s proposed 2024 budget is both outrageous and a master class in political manoeuvring. At a time when people are struggling financially, who would suggest a 10.5-per-cent tax increase, then threaten to boost it by an additional six per cent if the federal government doesn’t pony up more money?

BUT …

Gripped by Toronto’s annual budget panic? Just wait for the surplus

… As regularly as it panics over its budgets, Toronto runs big surpluses. Spending rises, no surprise there. But so does revenue. Year after year, more than one in every 10 dollars of Toronto’s revenue has flowed through to a surplus on the bottom line. The city’s accumulated surplus – the measure of net worth that represents its ability to deliver services – stood at $32.3-billion at the end of 2022.

Anyone who knows this history would bet that Toronto ran another healthy surplus in 2023. Notwithstanding the peaking budget panic, I’ll stake my soon-to-jump property tax bill that Toronto will run yet another one this year.

“You’re Big Brother:” EU Parliament Votes To Make Hate Speech an EU Crime

Sparking intense criticism from conservatives, the left-leaning majority of the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the extension of the EU crime list to include hate speech and hate crimes, which would allow the European Commission to introduce binding minimum penalties for all member states.

The vote, that took place on Thursday, January 18th, passed with 397 for and 121 against, with only 26 abstentions—the latter mainly coming from a handful of dissident leftists concerned that the law may be used to silence anti-Israel voices. As always, only the two conservative blocs, ECR and ID, voted against it while all leftist parties and the center-right EPP supported the report.
