Proposed Toronto police budget cut would pose ‘unacceptable risk’ to public safety: Chief Demkiw

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw denounced Mayor Olivia Chow’s plans to cut more than $12 million out of the proposed police budget, saying it would create an “unacceptable risk” to public safety amid increased emergency calls that officers are already struggling to keep pace with.

The Toronto Police Service has put forward what Demkiw called a “modest” 1.7 per cent ($20 million) increase to the police budget, amounting to a total of $1.186 billion.

Israeli envoy joins calls for Canada to clarify its stance on ICJ genocide case

OTTAWA – Israel’s envoy to Canada is joining calls for the federal Liberals to clearly state Ottawa’s position as the International Court of Justice considers an allegation of genocide against Israel.

Iddo Moed says Canada should “leave no room for misinterpretation” on its stance, noting that many of Canada’s allies and peers have stated a clear position on the case.

The highest court of the United Nations held two days of public hearings last week as South Africa argued that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

However, zooming out reveals Canada’s real estate bubble is nothing like any other G7 country. AfD plans to turn Germany into authoritarian state, vice-chancellor warns

The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is planning to transform Germany into an authoritarian state similar to Russia, the country’s vice-chancellor and economics minister, has warned, tacitly backing calls to ban the party.

Speaking a week after it emerged that party members had participated in a meeting to discuss mass deportations, allegedly including German citizens, Robert Habeck said the danger the party posed to democracy had been gravely underestimated.

Feds flagged transactions with keywords ‘MAGA’, ‘Trump’ for financial institutions: House panel

The House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government on Wednesday announced that it had obtained documents showing that federal agencies flagged financial transactions for financial institutions using politically sensitive terms such as “MAGA” and “Trump.”

The panel described an effort by which Americans might see their transactions flagged while making innocuous transactions such as purchasing a Bible or shopping at sporting goods stores.

Doctor is suspended for refusing to use transgender patient’s preferred pronouns – during argument about danger of sex change drugs

A family doctor has been suspended for three months after telling a transgender man they were a ‘biological woman’.

Dr Raymond Brière — who had been practicing for more than four decades in Montreal, Canada — was found by a complaints body to have acted in an ‘inappropriate and disrespectful manner’ after telling a patient that they were genetically female during an argument about the risks of hormone drugs.

During an appointment in mid-2022, the patient asked the Dr Brière for a prescription for testosterone therapy to help them transition into a man.

Useless Immigration Minister urged to crack down on international student ‘no shows’ at colleges

Immigration experts are calling on the government to crack down on the abuse of study permits for international students, including those gaining admission to Canada but who do not attend college or university once they get here.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is also being urged to target people applying from abroad to attend private colleges that report high levels of “no shows.”

The Liberals are doing nothing to mitigate the harm done.
