RCMP boosts contract scrutiny following review of dealings with China-linked firm

OTTAWA – The RCMP says it is updating its procurement practices after an internal review of dealings with a company that has ties to China.

A standing offer with Sinclair Technologies to provide the RCMP with radio-frequency filtering equipment was suspended in December after media coverage focusing on national security implications.

Sinclair’s parent company, Norsat International, has been owned by Chinese telecommunications firm Hytera since 2017, and the Chinese government has a 10 per cent stake in Hytera through an investment fund.

The Government Censored Me and Other Scientists. We Fought Back—and Won.

When I was four, my mother took her first flight and first trip out of her native India to the U.S. with me and my younger brother in tow. We were going to meet my father, an electrical engineer and rocket scientist by training, who had won the U.S. visa lottery in 1970. He had moved to New York a year earlier. By the time we arrived he was working at McDonald’s because engineering jobs had dried up during a recession.

A blunt and chilling (but accurate) appraisal of where our government schools are taking us

When I came across this X thread written by John Hayward of Breitbart (hat tip: Ace of Spades Headquarters), I was deeply impressed by its use of language and the scope of its overview.  Like many conservatives, I have come around to the view that the takeover of government schools by the revolutionary left is dooming out constitutional republic, unless parents rise up, their consciousness raised by the outrageous overreach underway and their view of the indoctrination underway during online classes for the lockdown, primarily but not exclusively related to indoctrination of pliable and confused children into life-altering steps toward transsexual status.

22 Years Later

The freedom that the 9/11 hijackers hated is slipping away from us with terrifying speed.

“Only days after 9/11, Norwegian author Gert Nygårdshaug sneered at the idea that there might soon be an attack on ‘Oslo or Rome or Copenhagen.’ He was far from alone in his mockery. Then came Madrid, London, Bali, Beslan, Mumbai….The Western European elite played down, even denied, any connection among these events. Yet year by year the truth has become increasingly clear: though the U.S. was the target on 9/11, the front line of the war with Islamism is Europe.”

Las Vegas is the future of the West

Neil Postman foresaw our trivial dystopia

Of the very few activities in my life that I count as being unambiguously improving, reading books and visiting authoritarian states probably score highest. Both are generally engaging, educational in some form or other, and force me to confront alternative visions of life. I feel much the same way, whenever I dip into Neil Postman’s Amusing Ourselves to Death (1985), which explores how and why populations might realistically become oppressed or compliant.

How social-justice activists revived anti-Semitism

In Western, leftish circles, Israel is now treated as a uniquely wicked nation. We’re told it is a racist, colonialist, ‘apartheid state’, despite ample evidence to the contrary. Social-justice activists treat this imperfect Middle Eastern democracy with infinitely more contempt than they do brutal dictatorships elsewhere in the region. Meanwhile, anti-Zionism has become all but indistinguishable from anti-Semitism, as ancient prejudices are expressed through a new woke language and cloaked in a phoney anti-imperialism.

Demolition of Marilyn Monroe’s house halted after widespread outrage

The final home of Marilyn Monroe – and the only residence she ever owned independently – will remain standing for now after Los Angeles officials intervened to block the property’s demolition.

The news that the new owners of 12305 Fifth Helena Drive, where Monroe died at age 36, filed for demolition permits had attracted widespread outrage. Los Angeles city councilwoman Traci Park said she received hundreds of calls urging her to save the Spanish colonial-style house in the city’s Brentwood neighborhood.

Why the Left defends Islamic veils

The Left that arrests pastors who define traditional marriage turns the other way when Muslim women are hidden behind veils or killed.

Iranian dissidents accuse the German giant Bosch of manufacturing and selling Iran the cameras used by the ayatollahs to find Iranian women on the streets who do not wear the veil so they can punish them. Can that be the same Bosch that organizes the pro-LGBT “Pride like a Bosch” on the streets of Europe?

The West has become a cartoon of its own self.

Was it an air guitar solo or a charade of public urination?

So ran the debate in the Belgian parliament last Thursday over the alleged bad party behaviour of Belgium’s Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne and his friends, the BBC reports.

Part of the ongoing political fallout saga known in Belgian media as ‘Pipigate,’ Quickenborne, of the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats party, had to answer to his country’s parliament over the events at his 50th birthday party on August 14th.

Tom Mulcair: Take a closer look at what Pierre Poilievre is peddling

Pierre Poilievre delivered an epic stemwinder to the Conservative Party faithful in Quebec City on Friday. He threw in every simplistic solution he’s been touting for years.

Canadians should start paying more attention to his nostrums and begin asking tough questions. Those are the types of questions that Poilievre likes to avoid because, in his view, journalists who ask them are part of a conspiracy against him.

I had the opportunity to work across the aisle from Poilievre for over a decade. They can lose the glasses, drop the tie, slow the cadence and reduce the Brylcreem. Those of us who got to know his overheated demagoguery firsthand know that nothing will have really changed — and that’s the danger.

Statue of founder of Soviet secret police unveiled in Moscow

A bronze statue of “Iron Felix” Dzerzhinsky, the ruthless founder of the Soviet secret police and architect of the Red Terror that followed the 1917 revolution, has been unveiled at the headquarters of Russia’s foreign spy service.

Dzerzhinsky, a Polish noble turned revolutionary who helped lay the foundations of the repressive system over which Joseph Stalin was to preside, is reviled by dissidents but is a hero to the spies who rule in Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

Pro-choice, gay father, Montrealer wife: Here’s why Conservatives think Pierre Poilievre can break through with Quebec voters

The Conservative party has set its target on the Bloc Québécois and the fight for Quebec votes may get ugly.

The party’s convention was centre stage for leader Pierre Poilievre’s dual strategy this weekend — a charm offensive towards soft nationalists and an aggressive campaign against the Bloc, which holds the seats the Tories may need to form a majority government.

Crown alleges Veltman inspired by white nationalism, planned to kill Muslims

WINDSOR, Ont. – Federal prosecutors are arguing that a man facing murder charges in the deaths of four members of a Muslim family in Ontario was motivated by white nationalist beliefs, branding the attack as an act of terrorism.

Nathaniel Veltman is accused of deliberately hitting five members of the Afzaal family with his truck while they were out for a walk in London, Ont., on the evening of June 6, 2021.

Good timing.
