Canadian Population Growth Requires 50k New Jobs Per Month: Stat Can

Canada’s population boom led to a talent windfall, but the country has no idea how to use it. Statistics Canada (Stat Can) data revealed much better-than-expected job gains in August 2023. However, those job gains failed to keep up with the population growth, ultimately softening the labor market. It may get a lot worse soon, with Stat Can estimating Canada needs to add about 50k jobs per month to maintain the strength of the current market. That would imply a near-record needs to be hit every single month.

Electric Vehicles: The (Unwanted) Car-Rental Preview

I have written before about how renting a car can turn into an unwanted preview of the electric-vehicle (EV) experience. Whatever the rental companies may be saying, it seems reasonable to think that car renters are increasingly being “forced” into EVs whether or not they want them because EV manufacturers are finding it more difficult than expected to find enough buyers for their product on the open market. Signing up for a central-planning project can be like that. Spotting a way to get hold of cars at a discount price, the rental companies have stepped up.

New York Times: Eric Adams Is A Democrat So It’s No Longer Hateful To Oppose Uncontrolled Mass Migration

A favorite pastime of mine is watching how quickly the national media discover nuance and complexity in a tragedy once it’s a Democrat who’s at the root of it.

Political violence committed by a Republican? Right-wing, pro-gun, white supremacist inspired by Fox News and Donald Trump’s hateful rhetoric!

Political violence committed by a Democrat? Well, there’s plenty of blame to go around, and both sides need to do their part in bringing down the temperature a little.

More Climate Fairy Tales

What a great summer it’s been for climate activists.

It’s been a good summer for climate activists who are pushing the false narrative of “climate change.”

We had the Canadian wildfires with smoke drifting into other parts of North America. Then there were hotter than usual temperatures in many parts of the country (it’s summertime and I predict temperatures will drop this fall, winter and spring, as usual), followed by a devastating fire in Maui, and then Hurricane Idalia.

America’s Untouchables

In this decade, America’s most effective conservative activist has likely been Chris Rufo, who in 2020 came up with a winning euphemism for all the racist antiwhite hate suffusing our schools, streets, and screens during the racial reckoning: “Critical Race Theory,” Rufo called it.

Personally, I just refer to racist antiwhite hate as “racist antiwhite hate.” But my term is far too self-explanatory to ever catch on. In the 21st century, Americans prefer opaque neologisms like “jump the shark” or “motte and bailey,” which require lectures on Happy Days trivia or feudal fortifications to understand.

“Critical Race Theory” has the advantage of being incomprehensible to those who haven’t been briefed.

The new woke James Bond is beyond parody

The near-universal loathing for Charlie Higson’s new Bond novel has restored my faith in humanity.

Last week on X (formerly known as Twitter), Ed West, journalist and eternal Eeyore of the British right, shared a few pages from the latest James Bond novel. He included no prompts to indicate how we should feel about it, or indeed why he had thought it worth bringing to our attention. But the derision it drew was immediate. The consensus was overwhelming: it was tripe.

Caribbean nations to formally demand slavery reparations from Royal family

Caribbean nations are to formally demand slavery reparations from the Royal family, The Telegraph can reveal.

Lloyds of London and the Church of England are also set to be approached with demands for reparative justice for their role in the slave trade and plantation system.

National reparations commissions in the Caribbean want to bypass the British Government and pursue financial payments directly from British institutions with historical links to slavery.

Harry and Meghan’s Downward Slide Accelerates as Their ‘Heart of Invictus’ Documentary Doesn’t Make Netflix Top 10

Might things be looking rosier for Prince Harry if he were a princess? According to audio tapes unheard until recently, the duke of Sussex’s mother, Princess Diana, said that at Harry’s christening in 1984, the prince of Wales at the time, King Charles, said, “We thought it would be a girl.”

That was not to be — nor, apparently, was Hollywood success a guarantee for the renegade royal despite his marriage to a former actress, Meghan Markle. Now, Harry’s “Heart of Invictus” documentary has failed to crack Netflix’s top 10 in both Britain and America since it was released last week.

Full Authoritarian: New Mexico Governor Suspends Constitutional Gun Rights For Law-Abiding Citizens In Albuquerque

On Friday evening, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) issued an emergency order suspending the right of law-abiding citizens to open and conceal carry firearms in crime-ridden Albuquerque and the surrounding county for at least 30 days, after declaring a public health emergency in response to a spate of recent gun violence.

Top Poilievre adviser says Conservatives are experiencing a ‘rejuvenation’

A key member of the brain trust that surrounds Pierre Poilievre says that the Conservative Party is undergoing a “rejuvenation” under the new leader, partially through outreach to several previously skeptical voting blocs.

“There’s been an evolution in terms of who the Conservative supporter is, who the Conservative voter is. Right now, we’re seeing an entirely new group of people … a new demographic of people that are looking at the Conservative Party and looking at Pierre Poilievre as being the next prime minister very seriously,” Jenni Byrne said in an interview with CBC’s The House airing Saturday.

Marian Shrine

Two years ago today we held Kathy’s funeral service.

I visited her resting place today. A light rain fell as I chatted away about just stuff. It is a lovely spot.

I mentioned The Marian Shrine has made the news. With luck they will declare it a Heritage site protecting it from demolition.

Kathy asked me to take her there on November 8 of 2020.

She wept in such sorrow there can be no way that God did not hear her. I stood numb beside her.

We walked by the river afterward and enjoyed the mild weather.

I both hate and cherish the memory along with many others from that time.

Mostly I just miss her company.

WARMINGTON: Politicians always have lots to say about wildfires, except when arson charges laid

There was no social media post on X from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about this little piece of news.

Same goes from Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault or former Environment Minister Catherine McKenna.

But police in Quebec have charged a man with arson for several allegedly deliberately set fires in northern Quebec in what was a major criminal investigation that could be the stuff of movies.

Conrad Black: Steven Guilbeault’s destructive crusade against Canadian prosperity

Canada’s minister of environment and climate change, Steven Guilbeault, has been an activist all of his conscient life.

He co-founded an organization that rejoiced in the name Action for Solidarity, Equity, Environment and Development. In 2001, when he was in his early 30s, he scaled the CN Tower like Spiderman to an altitude of 340 metres and unfurled a banner proclaiming “Canada and Bush — Climate Killers.”

Burning Man becomes a toxic wasteland

Whatever your idea of fun might be, it cannot possibly include a scenario in which you carry a bucket of your own stools

If any readers are having those September, back-to-work blues perhaps I might offer them a sure-fire palliative? Just go online and watch videos of this year’s Burning Man.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Burning Man is a week-long festival of music and “self-expression” which takes place in the Nevada desert. It is especially popular among libertarians and Silicon Valley types. It is a place where people pay huge sums of money to take drugs and imagine that they have had some unique insight into the world. Often they come away believing that if only all of life could be like this, the world would be cleaner and kindlier. Naturally each year they leave behind a toxic wasteland which requires hundreds of workers to tidy up after them. But I digress.
