Slavery Accusations: Dundas Relative on Mission to Clear Name of 18th-Century Statesman

The pushback against renaming Toronto’s Dundas Street gained momentum recently after three former mayors spoke out in opposition to it, and a distant relative of Henry Dundas has renewed hope the proposal will be scrapped.

Jennifer Dundas, a retired crown prosecutor and former CBC reporter, has spent years reading through scholarly articles, books, official records, and journal entries related to the prominent British politician Henry Dundas (1742–1811).

Anthony Furey: Why the Jordan Peterson Ruling Should Concern Us All

A new court ruling in Ontario has set a troubling precedent that could put all professionals in the province at risk of censure for making online political comments completely unrelated to their work.

That’s the implication of an Ontario Superior Court ruling concerning a dispute between popular author and psychologist Jordan Peterson and the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO).

Hollywood homeless crisis escalates

As rampant homelessness continues to plague the streets and neighborhoods of Los Angeles, a new video sheds light on the issue as it impacts LA’s iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The video, taken earlier this summer, shows dozens of homeless people collapsed and prostrated on the streets of Hollywood, laying on public benches, and lining the streets with makeshift tents.

‘Hidden between the glitz and glamor, homelessness has cast a shadow over the streets,’ says the video’s narrator, as he walks around the neighborhood.

William Watson: Of course we have a rental crisis. Who would want to be a landlord?

You must pay the rent! I can’t pay the rent! You must pay the rent! I can’t pay the rent!

The internet tells me this classic confrontation between a greedy landlord and a penniless young damsel dates back at least to an 1867 play called “Under the Gaslight.” (Gaslight, indeed!) We boomers had it embedded in our consciousness by the cartoon series “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” which several subsequent generations have probably seen in re-runs.

Don’t believe the renewables myth. Wind and solar are not cheap

Abandoned wind turbines California

Politicians everywhere are repeating the mantra that renewable energy is cheap, and we need to use it instead of gas (currently expensive in and near Europe) to bring down energy costs for households.

As US President Joe Biden said of clean energy before signing the poetically named Executive Actions on Tackling Climate Change, Creating Jobs, and Restoring Scientific Integrity “it’s affordable; because it’s clean; because, in many cases, it’s cheaper… [clean technologies] will ultimately become cheaper than any other kind of energy, helping us dramatically expand our economy and create more jobs with a cleaner, cleaner environment”.

The Inflation Reduction Act has been designed to make this a reality. Lots of investment in lovely green energy and green jobs. This sounds wonderful.

Unfortunately, renewables are not cheap.

Justin Trudeau should step down before next election, majority of survey respondents say

OTTAWA — Most Canadians — and many past Liberal supporters — think Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should resign instead of leading his party into the next federal election, a new poll suggests.

Fifty-six per cent of respondents to the latest national survey from Abacus Data said Trudeau “should step down” when asked if he should run for office again. That’s compared with 27 per cent who said Trudeau should stay, and 17 per cent who were not sure.

Beware the creeping return of mask mandates

This week a handful of American schools, businesses and healthcare facilities re-imposed mask mandates and other Covid safety policies. This provided an opportunity for lobby groups and our new Covid safety subculture to advocate for the return of the “new normal” media narrative: a “surging” virus is meeting a “complacent” population that will need to be “nudged” to do the “right thing”.

Adam Zivo: Supervised injection sites fuel crime unless accompanied by massive police presence

Canada’s supervised consumption sites aren’t safe for surrounding communities. While they shouldn’t be abolished, significant reforms are urgently needed.

First piloted in Vancouver in 2003, these sites are designed to reduce drug-associated harms by giving visitors clean paraphernalia, such as sterilized needles, along with a safe space to consume their substances. Trained staff are able to test drugs for contaminants, reverse accidental overdoses and provide users with referrals to social services, such as housing assistance and addiction treatment.

Inside ambitious mercenary outfit Redut, the Wagner rival linked to the Russian spy services

A mercenary group controlled by Russian military intelligence is among the most likely successors to Wagner as Yevgeny Prigozhin’s group has been left leaderless.

Wagner occupied a unique position among Russia’s private “security” firms.

Although bankrolled by the Russian state and reliant on the ministry of defence for ammunition, it swelled to an enormous size and achieved a degree of autonomy, notoriety, and battlefield success that few private armies can boast of.
