Are we the worthy successors of the D-Day generation?

MY grandfather was not prone to sentimentality. Overt demonstrations of feigned emotion would usually be met with a short rebuke along the lines of ‘what a load of b*****ks’.

Much of this, no doubt, was just who he was. Some of it, however, must have been born from his experiences.

On June 6, 1944, at the tender age of 18, he parachuted into Ranville, Normandy. The next few months saw him fight across France and Germany, suffering life-threatening wounds along the way and losing his closest friends, particularly his mate Frenchie, which stayed with him till his dying days some 77 years later.

Is Biden all that immune to the challenge of antivaxer Robert F Kennedy Jr ?

Standing in a reconstruction of Bobby Kennedy’s office from his time as attorney-general, visitors scoff at the idea that his son can become the latest member of America’s most celebrated political family to challenge for the White House.

Like the room at the JFK Presidential Library in Boston, Robert F Kennedy Jr does not quite resemble the original.

I think he will do much better than is projected.

Reparations Are No More Than a Dream of Privilege

Black Americans tragically turned our focus from rights and laws to identity politics and victimization.

If simple logic were the only measure of truth in matters of race, reparations for black Americans would make perfect sense. We have endured four centuries of an especially mean and degrading persecution. Slavery, and the regime of segregation that followed it, was dawn-to-dusk, cradle-to-grave oppression. The only argument against reparations would be that no contemporary offer of reparation could ever be sufficient compensation.

But since the 1960s, we blacks have been all but overwhelmed with social programs and policies that seek to reparate us. Didn’t the 1964 Civil Rights Act launch an era of reparation in America?

How the identity cult captured America

Equity was born in an ideological graveyard

We live in a time of ideological exhaustion. Our doctrines and ideals lie broken in pieces all around us and never fit into a whole. Jagged bits of Marxism and anarchism, nationalism and liberalism, clutter the landscape, tear at our feet and impede our way as we stagger onward in search of some promised land. Yet there can be no promised land, no future, no past, in such a psychotic jumble of first principles. All we can muster is rage at the structures around us, so inexplicably shattered, and the urge not to repair but to obliterate them totally — to negate them into dust.

Abandoned stores, streets overtaken by the homeless and drug-addled, theft so rampant that CANDY is locked away: Welcome to San Francisco’s ghost town downtown

A photo plastered on the empty windows shows it as it used to be: a colorful branch of Gap surrounded by crowds of cheerful tourists and not a drug addict or scrap of litter in sight.

Today, San Francisco’s once bustling Union Square and downtown area is a shadow of its former self: rows of empty stores, sparse crowds even on peak weekend shopping days and nearby hotels – including a huge Hilton – unable to cover their mortgage payments.

The historic Flood Building, a survivor of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, stands largely empty: Gap has gone along with nearly every other business in the property with the exception of a tired branch of Dr. Martens and an Urban Outfitters store offering 70 per cent discounts.

Who will win the war in Ukraine?

The 4 counteroffensive scenarios

Ukraine’s much-heralded counteroffensive has only just begun but already the politics are boiling over. Last week politicians and analysts close to President Putin threatened nuclear Armageddon once more and said Moscow might disrupt Europe’s internet by slicing underwater cables.

Nato is also sabre-rattling. Its secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, has repeatedly declared that Ukraine’s future lies in the military alliance. Flights across Europe are being rerouted because of the military alliance’s biggest air manoeuvres, conducted this month over Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Man charged with setting massive Yosemite park fire initially blamed on climate change

A 71-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly starting a devastating massive forest fire in Yosemite National Park that was previously thought to have been caused by climate change.

Edward Fredrick Wackerman of Mariposa, Calif., was busted Friday on suspicion of arson for allegedly igniting the Oak Fire, which destroyed 127 homes, caused thousands of people to evacuate and ravaged nearly 20,000 acres of vegetation in July 2022.

$160K apocalypse Super Trucks, $2M doomsday bunkers and a $3B emergency food industry … Prepping the Preppers

When venture capitalist John Ramey popped open his trunk in front of a fellow Silicon Valley executive, he revealed an embarrassing secret: he was a bonafide ‘prepper’.

It was 2010 and nearly a decade before Collins dictionary would declare ‘permacrisis,’ defined as ‘an extended period of instability and insecurity, especially one resulting from a series of catastrophic events,’ as the ‘word of the year.’

Inside Ramey’s car was his ‘Get Home Bag,’ packed with a first aid kit, radio, map, compass, and calorie-dense food rations.

It’s like porn;)

Conservatives have to moderate to win the next election, O’Toole says in exit interview

Former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole maintains the party will have to moderate if it wants to win a majority government in the next general election, and he “disagrees” with his caucus colleagues who say otherwise.

With just days to go before the Durham, Ont. MP resigns his seat in the House of Commons, O’Toole sat down with CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos, in an interview airing Sunday, to discuss why he’s leaving, his thoughts on the future of the party, conspiracy theories, and allegations of Chinese interference in Canada’s elections.

CBC explains why you’re a racist: Blaming immigration for the country’s housing crisis disguises the real problem, usual suspects say

It’s an argument that comes up time after time whenever there is a discussion about the housing crisis that plagues Metro Vancouver or anywhere else in Canada.

If Canada can’t house the people who already live here, we should stop letting more people into the country.

On Friday, the country’s population hit 40 million, with nearly all of last year’s growth due to immigration. The federal government has signed on to allow up to 500,000 newcomers into Canada annually by 2025.

This should have been headlined CBC Explains Why You’re A Racist For Objecting To Trudeau’s Mass Immigration Policy That Will Destroy Your Social & Financial Security.

The usual garbage “analysis” is thrown up i.e. immigrants are necessary for economic growth.

They fail to mention that immigrants themselves age and thus are not a fix for Canada’s aging demographic or that Canada no longer attracts the “younger immigrant” that can give as much as they take over the course of their working lives.

Our immigration policy is so sick that most granted permanent resident status can’t even be bothered to take out Canadian citizenship any longer because we’re just a waystation on the route to greener pastures to them:  In 2021, of the permanent residents who had come to Canada within the last 10 years, just 45.7 per cent had become citizens. In 2001, that figure was 75.1 per cent.

The cost of family reunification with grandma and grandpa to Canada? Not mentioned.

They lie about a non-existent labour shortage and make no mention of how mass immigration depresses wages.

The impact of Automation and AI on employment? Not a factor in CBC land!

But they do let you know that you’re a racist for daring to defend your own best interests.

A different take on Mass Immigration …

Douglas Todd: Five things the West can do for the ‘left behind’

Oxford University economist Paul Collier told a North American says there are better ways than immigration to help the world’s poorest, whose ongoing plight will eventually destabilize the globe.

Today’s right to asylum is the road to barbarism in Europe

Retrace the philosophical evolution of the right of asylum to understand how much it has become a weapon aimed at the European peoples.

Éric Zemmour: “Today in France there are between 120 and 140 knife attacks a day! Per day! Look at the stats: in the 1960s there were 3 or 4 stabbings every two years. This is a change of population”.

French Senator Valérie Boyer reported 44,000 knife attacks in two years.

And now even Emmanuel Macron evokes “decivilization”.

A few days ago in Annecy, a wandering and disoriented man from Syria terrorized a park by stabbing several children. An asylum seeker who was first received as such in Sweden ten years ago, and claimed the right to protection in Europe, where he has committed the worst acts of barbarism.

The Reparations Success Story That Isn’t

The decline in the urban black community is due to institutional white guilt, not institutional white racism.

On June 7, I was one of five panelists, two of us white, to participate in an American Public Square discussion on the subject of reparations for African Americans. The discussion will air multiple times on the Kansas City PBS station KCPT.

The producers chose me because I have a book coming out on a related subject, Untenable: The True Story of White Ethnic Flight From America’s Cities. They figured my self-interest would overcome my sense of self-preservation. Finding a second panelist to challenge reparations in an era as fraught as our own took a good deal more effort.
