How can Justin Trudeau’s public safety minister keep his job amid so much controversy? What you need to know about Marco Mendicino

OTTAWA—Liberal Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino does not like to lose — or be thought of as a loser.

That much was clear when at the centre of jokes at a dinner last weekend about being shuffled out of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, he mock-charged the stage to defend his honour.

Russian attack helicopters gain upper hand on key southern front, says UK MoD

Longer-range missiles deployed against ground targets to impede Ukrainian hopes of severing land corridor between Crimea and eastern Donetsk

Russia is using attack helicopters equipped with long-range missiles to gain an upper hand on the key southern front of the Ukrainian counter-offensive, according to Britain’s Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Moscow has deployed more than 20 extra helicopters to Berdyansk airport, which lies approximately 100km behind the front line, since Kyiv launched its offensive earlier this month, the ministry said in an intelligence update.

Usual Grifters begin 3-day protest march to Roxham Road

Despite the rain trickling down Saturday morning, about 100 protesters gathered at La Fontaine park in Montreal with plastic rain ponchos, umbrellas, signs and flags to set off on a three-day march toward Roxham Road, in the Montérégie.

Refugee advocacy groups, migrants and supporters will be walking 73 kilometres to protest the recent closure of Quebec’s irregular border crossing to asylum seekers arriving in Canada from the U.S.

Citizen mutiny across Europe raises doubts about net zero

Strict climate laws have riled households and farmers on the continent, while Biden has cushioned the blow with generous incentives. What’s the right mix between carrot and stick?

In the beginning there was fire. Just as cavemen once crouched around the flames, so coal scuttles and mantelpieces became the focus of modern life. “There’s an emotional connection between people and combustible energy sources,” says the environmental historian Melanie Arndt of Albert Ludwig University, Freiburg.

Now coal is on its way out, so are wood burners, and governments in Europe are poking in people’s cellars, telling them to change their living habits in the next few months. That’s how Germans are beginning to see it and it’s no good telling them that they voted for it. As the net zero deadlines gallop closer, as states get tougher in their restrictions, so political tensions are starting to crackle across Europe.

Jamie Sarkonak: Identity politics baked into new Liberal ‘sustainable’ jobs plan

Liberal jobs programs, business investment pools and economic plans all have one thing in common: they are obsessed with the skin colour and sexuality of the workforce.

On Thursday, Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson tabled Bill C-50, or the Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act. The bill provides a legislative backdrop to the feds’ broader sustainable jobs plan, which (if not obvious from the name) is geared at boosting job growth in the low-carbon sector. If passed, Bill C-50 would require the Minister of Natural Resources to make five-year jobs plans, adhere to various reporting requirements and assemble an advisory council to guide the execution of the plan.

Give robots AI brains to be more human but beware misuse, say scientists

Combining physical robots with artificial intelligence (AI) could enable machines to develop human-like thinking, a scientist has warned.

Current AI models, such as ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, have no physical embodiment and use pre-existing datasets to answer questions and solve problems.

Experts say that this type of disembodied technology is never going to develop true sentience or complex, human-like thoughts. But embedding this technology into a physical location, such as in a robot, could enable this to happen.

GOLDSTEIN: Ex-spy chief warned of China’s interference in 2010 — he was almost fired

Thirteen years ago, the then newly-appointed director of the Canadian Security and Intelligence Service warned Canadians about the growing threat of interference by China.

It almost ended Richard Fadden’s career. It’s also why he would be an excellent choice to head a public inquiry into foreign interference today.

Activist who forced compulsory-nude female-only spa to admit trans women with penises is branded a ‘malignant’ LIAR over claims she visited in person to complain, two months before she had sex-change op

A trans activist who forced a female-only, compulsory-nude spa to admit transgender women with penises was branded ‘malignant’ and a liar by a lawyer for the spa over claims she lied about visiting the facility before complaining.

Haven Wilvich has been accused of lying that she visited the Olympus Spa in early 2020 to ask whether trans women with penises could be admitted.

She now claims to have made the enquiry over the phone instead. Wilvich complained to Washington State’s Human Rights Commission after being told only trans women who’d had gender reassignment surgery would be admitted.

Canadian Military’s COVID Vaccine Mandate Violated Charter Rights, Grievance Review Committee Finds

A military administrative tribunal has found the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) COVID-19 vaccine mandate violated the charter rights of members who refused vaccination and said the policy was “arbitrary” in some aspects and “overly broad.”

“I conclude that the limitation of the grievors’ right to liberty and security of the person by the CAF vaccination policy is not in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice because the policy, in some aspects, is arbitrary, overly broad and disproportionate,” wrote Nina Frid of the Military Grievances External Review Committee (MGERC) in a May 30 decision.

J6 Pipe Bomber Story Goes Boom

The FBI conducted a halfhearted inquiry, at best. Now we know why.

It remains the greatest unsolved mystery related to the events of January 6: Who placed pipe bombs near the headquarters of both the Democratic National Committee and Republican National Committee the night before?

Shortly before the joint session of Congress convened at 1 p.m. to debate the results of the 2020 Electoral College vote, a woman on her way to do some laundry looked down and spotted a device in an alley adjacent to the RNC building. Karlin Younger ran to notify security guards, who then called police. Law enforcement conducted a search of the area and located another device outside the DNC building.

Twenty-four reasons why Net Zero must be abandoned

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and all other so-called climate science organisations including the Met Office, the International Energy Agency and the Grantham Institute use selective data, spurious data, falsified data (outright lies) and garbage-in-garbage-out computer models to scare gullible politicians and the public about a non-existent impending climate catastrophe. They also, wickedly, prevent any sceptical or dissenting views, or empirical data which demolishes their claims, from being published or aired.

For DEI Supporters, Perpetuation of Racism Is Good Business

The apparent goal of contemporary anti-racism activism — which is not the activism of the civil-rights era — is not to end racism but to perpetuate it.

At a former university where I taught and served as a diversity officer (yes, that happened), I had a meeting with the school’s black-student union. Toward the end of the meeting, I asked something to the effect of “Is your goal to be obsolete in the near future?”
