Beijing’s alleged intimidation of MP Chong is a familiar story for Chinese diaspora

Lawmakers in Ottawa were shocked this month to learn Chinese intelligence had allegedly targeted the Hong Kong-based family of Michael Chong MP, after he criticized Beijing’s human rights record. But for many Chinese, Hong Kong, Uyghur and Tibetan activists in the diaspora, the news came as no surprise.

Chinese security services have long pressured family members of dissidents living overseas. In some cases, the relatives of diaspora or exile activists have been imprisoned in apparent relation for their work.

The nonsense of the Global Disinformation Index – which you help pay for

IN A previous article, I described how raison d’État – the doctrine by which the State acts in its own interests and ignores constraints of law or natural right – frequently comes in a benevolent guise. Segments of the population are conceived of as vulnerable, and the State exerts a ‘power of care’ to improve their well-being. This ultimately serves the purpose of securing their loyalty in the absence of a theological justification for ruling.

Playing with Fire

The activist Left’s indulgent reaction to Jordan Neely’s death is courting populist frustration with tolerance for violent criminality.

Jordan Neely, a homeless man reportedly exhibiting outward signs of mental illness and menacing passengers, should not have been on the F train on Monday afternoon. The Marine veteran who subdued him with the assistance of his fellow passengers shouldn’t have been in that position. The application of force that resulted in Neely’s death shouldn’t have had to occur. But it did.

EU Militarisation: ‘Dangerous Fantasy’ Becomes Reality

Before the 2016 EU referendum, leading Remainers insisted that we Brexiteers were ‘dangerous fantasists’ when we warned about the rise of a European Union army. But as the EU accelerates its drive towards a militarised supra-state, we are surely entitled to ask: who are the dangerous fantasists now?

When European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called for a Europe-wide security force in 2015, Leave campaigners led by then-UKIP leader Nigel Farage MEP seized upon it as proof that they had been right all along. Top Brussels bureaucrats openly wanted an EU military machine that could command the forces of member states.

The New Ugly Americans

How odd that those on the Left who in the past decried “American imperialism” are now proving the greatest imperialists of all.

The old cultural imperialism was supposedly greedy corporatism like Disneyland, McDonald’s, and Starbucks sprouting up worldwide to supplant local competitors.

But these businesses spread because they appealed to free-will consumer demand abroad. They were not imposed top down.

The U.S. presence in Afghanistan collapsed in August 2021 amid the greatest American military humiliation in modern history. A billion-dollar new embassy was abandoned. Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of new infrastructure at the huge Bagram Airbase was dumped.

Why should lesbians sleep with men?

Sexual preference is now a moral crusade

If you are a late millennial or early Gen Z-er, life is probably quite hard right now. Chances are that you can’t afford to buy your own home, or even go out socialising that much. Perhaps you can’t avoid feeling guilty either: for eating meat, failing to recycle, having immoral ancestors, using the wrong words. And you almost definitely can’t get off your phone. It’s not all bad news, though. No matter what your material or biological circumstances, there is at least one thing you definitely can do. You can become a lesbian.

The threat of civil war in Bavaria

From The Times, May 5, 1923

The Burgomaster of Nuremberg has informed the City Council that the local police recently discovered at the headquarters of the National Socialists a quantity of arms and munitions, including two machine-guns. Arrogant Lying Pissant Trudeau refuses to clear up confusion over communication of China interference allegations

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he shared the “best information” he had when he told Canadians a report about a Chinese government plot to target MPs was never shared outside of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service — despite information to the contrary.

But in a news conference Friday, the prime minister refused to answer questions about the source of the communication disconnect in his government.

“I get a briefings regularly from various sources. I’m not going to go into details on that,” he said. “I shared the best information I had at the time both to [Conservative MP Michael] Chong and to Canadians.”
