Silicon Valley Bank Closed by Regulators

Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. takes control of tech-focused lender following run on deposits

Regulators shut down Silicon Valley Bank Friday after a run on deposits doomed the tech-focused lender’s plans to raise fresh capital.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. said it has taken control of SVB via a new bank it created called the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara. All of the bank’s deposits have been transferred to the new bank, the regulator said.

Insured depositors will have access to their funds by Monday morning, the FDIC said. Depositors with funds exceeding insurance caps will get receivership certificates for their uninsured balances.

China accuses Canada of smearing reputation over alleged secret police stations

China on Friday accused Canada of smearing its reputation over allegations China is secretly operating two overseas police stations in Quebec.

Canada should “stop sensationalizing and hyping the matter and stop attacks and smears on China,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a daily briefing.

“China has been … strictly abiding by international law and respecting all countries’ judicial sovereignty,” Mao said.

RCMP watchdog investigates how B.C. police unit handles resource project protests

OTTAWA – The RCMP watchdog has launched a systemic investigation of the British Columbia unit that polices anti-logging and pipeline protests, just as a proposed class-action lawsuit is filed in court over the actions of those officers.

Michelaine Lahaie, chairperson of the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission, says in a statement that the investigation will look into the activities and operations of the RCMP “E” Division Community-Industry Response Group.

Based on the Coastal GasLink incident my impression is that the RCMP do as little as possible.

A group of mobilised Russian men in a video message said they are refusing to obey commanders’ orders to go into an assault outside Donetsk.

Twitter sucks and Justin Trudeau is a whore

Well today I learned I am suspended by twitter for a week

Calling that whore Justin Trudeau a whore is verboten.

Twitter Canada seems to be operating as Twitter of old, a backwater unnoticed by Musk,

Shadow banning or throttling or whatever they’re calling it now is worse for my account now than even under old Twitter management.

I have twice contacted support to have my old account restored and have yet to hear back.

I suspect that like most of our media Twitter has a Liberal party insider hard at work protecting Junior.

Brian Giesbrecht: Most Canadians Don’t Think Canada Is a ‘Post-National State’

When newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told a bewildered Canada in 2015 that Canada was a “post-national state” not many of us knew what he was talking about.

Doesn’t “post-national” mean that Canada was once a nation, but no longer is one? Was he really saying that Canada was no longer a nation—that it had somehow graduated from nation status to some higher stage?

He didn’t explain, but perhaps what is happening now at Roxham Road can be at least partly explained by Trudeau’s unusual conception of what the country he is governing is all about.

Sir Michael Caine hits out at ‘bull***t’ suggestion his 1964 movie Zulu incites extremism after it was included on list by government’s Prevent scheme for ‘encouraging far-Right sympathies’

Sir Michael Caine has blasted the ‘bull***t’ suggestion his 1964 film Zulu incites the far-Right after it was included on a government list of works that may ‘encourage’ extremism.

The epic war movie, which also starred cinematic greats Richard Burton and Stanley Baker, depicts the 1879 Battle of Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu war, in which 150 British soldiers successfully held off 4,000 Zulu warriors.

While the soldiers were awarded 11 Victoria Crosses for their efforts, the re-telling of their victory – released 59 years ago – has previously come under fire for alleged ‘racist overtones’ and ‘factual inaccuracies’.

How long do people live in Canada? COVID-19 shortened national life expectancy, new health dashboard finds

Despite life spans trending upward for most of the last century, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the largest annual drop in Canadian life expectancy on record, according to a new national health dashboard.

Canada’s chief public health officer Theresa Tam unveiled the new, interactive dashboard Wednesday, writing in a statement the site will be used as an “integral part” of her annual reporting on the health of Canadians.

My bet is covid measures not “covid” shortened the national lifespan.

The Government wants to control what you watch with Bill C-11

If you enjoy watching YouTube videos or prefer on-demand streaming services, like Netflix or Disney, over cable or radio, Bill C-11 will have a big impact on you.

Through this piece of legislation, the government is about to give itself the authority to control what you watch. Instead of giving you more of what you want, YouTube will be instructed to give you more of what the government wants you to watch.
