House adjourns with no speaker after Kevin McCarthy falls short

WASHINGTON — Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy failed to attain the required votes to become House speaker on the first three ballots Tuesday — leaving millions of Americans wondering how long the power struggle will last.

McCarthy (R-Calif.) could only lose four Republican votes in his bid to replace former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), but watched as 19 GOPers balked on the first and second ballots and were joined by a 20th defector on the third.

The House adjourned Tuesday evening without a resolution, scheduling a fourth round of voting to begin around noon Wednesday.

According to the United Nations, the deportation of a convicted Palestinian-French terrorist from Israel constitutes a “war crime.”

This is the same UN whose officials hold meetings on a regular basis with leaders of Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist group designated as a terrorist organization by the US, Canada, the European Union, Japan, Australia, Israel and the United Kingdom.

This is also the same UN whose representatives have failed to condemn Hamas for building tunnels beneath schools run by the United Nations Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip.

‘We’re in a space race’: Nasa sounds alarm at Chinese designs on moon

The US is locked in a space race with China and the country needs to “watch out” that its rival does not gain a foothold and try to dominate lunar resources, Nasa’s top official has warned.

The assessment came from the Nasa administrator, Bill Nelson, a former astronaut and Florida senator, who went on to warn that China could eventually claim to “own” the moon’s resource-rich areas.

The contest between the US and China, he added, was intensifying and the next two years could determine which country achieves an advantage.

A recently proposed federal mandate that would require all vehicles sold in Canada to be electric by the year 2035 will cost at least $99 billion, according to new government figures.

“The proposed amendments are expected to lead to a loss of consumer choice as the non-zero emission vehicles which are preferred by some will eventually be phased out of the light duty vehicle market,” wrote Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault’s department in a regulatory notice on Dec. 31, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.

Mayor John Tory plans $48.3-million increase in Toronto police budget

Mayor John Tory announced Tuesday that he plans to increase the police budget by almost $50 million this year, a move he said was necessary to keep communities safe, but which immediately sparked opposition from critics who say more officers aren’t the answer.

At a press conference at city hall, Tory said the additional $48.3 million in police funding would represent a 4.3 per cent increase compared to the force’s 2022 budget.

The money will go toward initiatives like expanding the Toronto Police Neighbourhood Community Officer program, and hiring 200 officers, the mayor said.

“On Monday morning an explosion happened in an apartment building in Vällingby, in western Stockholm. According to SVT sources, a well-known rap artist is among the four arrested for the bombing. Another explosion happened early in the morning in Bagarmossen in southern Stockholm. In all, five people have been arrested.”

Sam Bankman-Fried pleads not guilty in sprawling crypto fraud case

Accused cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried entered a not-guilty plea at his arraignment in Manhattan federal court Tuesday.

Judge Lewis Kaplan set a tentative trial date of Oct. 2, 2023, for the 30-year-old fallen wunderkind.

It was Bankman-Fried’s second appearance in Manhattan federal court since his extradition from the Bahamas.

He’s got about 10 months to ponder his non-existent defense.

The federal government settled 431,645 new permanent residents in 2022, blowing past the previous all-time record set in 2021.

It’s one signal that the federal government appears on track to carry out its immigration plan. Next year, the government hopes to bring in another 485,000 new permanent residents.

“Newcomers play an essential role in filling labour shortages, bringing new perspectives and talents to our communities, and enriching our society as a whole,” said Sean Fraser, the minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship, in a news release Tuesday.

BULLSHIT. Unless of course you happen to like virulent anti-Semitism, honor killings and Sikh-Hindu sectarian violence spilling out on our streets or the poison of identity politics.

The Bank of Canada loves it too, they told the Corporate class to keep wages down as it was their intent to fight inflation on the backs of working people.

Immigration policy in Canada is designed to meet the needs of the corporate class, it should be designed to benefit citizens FULL STOP.

While the department publicly encouraged “every person in Canada” to participate in a survey about what this plan should include, email records show that people were screened out if they believed that an anti-hate plan wasn’t needed at all.

Homeless woman says living in Portland is ‘a piece of cake’

A homeless woman in Portland revealed how easy the Oregon city makes it to subsist in that lifestyle.

A woman identified only as Wendy told an interviewer from the nonprofit We Heart Seattle, “It’s a piece of cake, really; that’s probably why you’ve got so many out here.”

She mentioned that certain organizations will provide free food to the city’s homeless residents, letting the homeless do what they want in between those meals.

Over the past year, he has led the way towards making authoritarianism great again, forcing thousands of Canadians to live as second-class citizens, while vilifying those who remain fond of their rights as dangerous bigots who should be cut off from society.

Former US Marine held in Australia received more than $100,000 to train Chinese pilots, indictment alleges

The US government has accused the former marine pilot Daniel Duggan of receiving more than $100,000 to teach Chinese aviators how to land on aircraft carriers.

An unsealed indictment, filed in the US District of Colombia, alleges the naturalised Australian received 12 payments of either $9,900 or $9,500, with receipts often citing “personal development training”.

It says the payments were made by an unnamed China-based business that, according to the US government, “acquired military equipment and technical data for the PRC government and military”.
