Germans on the verge of a nervous breakdown

It’s a sign of the nation’s fraught state of mind that many seriously believe this week’s unlikely plotters could have toppled democracy.

BERLIN — Germany is on edge.

Early Wednesday, thousands of balaclava-clad German police officers fanned out across the country, arresting 25 people and seizing weapons to upend what authorities described as a diabolical plot to overthrow the country’s government and reinstate the monarchy. The group’s “military arm” was surreptitiously building “a new German army,” the lead prosecutor on the case said.

A day later, however, the case looks more like the script of a Monty Python episode than a sequel to the Day of the Jackal.

The alleged ringleader was Prince Heinrich XIII Reuß, the long-haired scion of an 800-year-old aristocratic line, who police said organized conspiratorial meetings at his hilltop Schloss in rural Thuringia.

Wilfrid Laurier University asks court to dismiss Jordan Peterson lawsuit

An Ontario university being sued by controversial psychologist Jordan Peterson has asked the Superior Court of Justice to dismiss the defamation lawsuit, arguing that it would limit free expression.

The controversy dates back to 2017, when Peterson, a best-selling self-help author and clinical psychologist at the University of Toronto, began rocketing to fame over his objections to adding protections for transgender Canadians to the human rights code.

France bans domestic flights in adherence to agenda of global communism

The writing was on the wall as soon as the “experts” declared “two weeks to flatten the curve.” Some of us saw right through the scheme, while the less-astute did not. We recognized the move was one against freedom and prosperity rather than for our welfare, and knew it was not only for two weeks. We knew that if the ruling class was allowed to follow through with their “lockdown” agenda — the forced closure of private businesses, dictating who was “essential” and who was “non-essential” — then greater tyranny would follow.

However, “told ya so” is bittersweet.

RCMP suspends contract with China-linked company

The RCMP has suspended a procurement contract with a company that has links to China.

The office of Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino confirmed to CBC News that the RCMP has suspended a contract with Sinclair Technologies for radio frequency (RF) equipment. Sinclair’s parent company, Norsat International, has been owned by Chinese telecommunications firm Hytera since 2017.

The Chinese government owns around 10 per cent of Hytera through an investment fund.

André Pratte: Confusing Liberal gun ban the result of either incompetence or cynicism

Bill C-21 is the latest and the most ambitious gun control legislation tabled by the Trudeau government. Therefore, it is a hugely controversial measure, with both camps entrenched in their usual uncompromising positions. Unfortunately, the government aggravated the situation by bringing forward at the last minute a series of complex amendments that make the bill difficult to understand even for knowledgeable persons. Whether this manoeuvre is the result of incompetence or of cynicism (as my friend Tasha Kheiriddin has asserted in the Post), the government should be condemned for this attempt to bulldoze Parliament on such an important bill.

Iranian forces shooting at faces and genitals of female protesters, medics say

Iranian security forces are targeting women at anti-regime protests with shotgun fire to their faces, breasts and genitals, according to interviews with medics across the country.

Doctors and nurses – treating demonstrators in secret to avoid arrest – said they first observed the practice after noticing that women often arrived with different wounds to men, who more commonly had shotgun pellets in their legs, buttocks and backs.

Caroline Ellison, math whiz and Newton native, was bound for success. Then she got into crypto.

At an exclusive party in the Bahamas last spring, FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried was perched atop a patio railing, mingling with pop star Katy Perry and actor Orlando Bloom. FTX was one of the hottest cryptocurrency exchanges of the moment, and Bankman-Fried was surrounded by people vying for attention.

Across the patio, keeping to herself, was one of Bankman-Fried’s key lieutenants, Caroline Ellison, who ran the crypto trading firm he founded, Alameda Research. She didn’t appear fazed by the celebrities, and party-goer David Micley found it easy enough to strike up a conversation with her.

“She didn’t seem like a person that took herself too seriously or thought of herself as too important,” said Micley, who works in the crypto industry and described the party scene to the Globe.

She may be playing this smarter than Sammy.

Twitter’s suppression of Hunter Biden’s laptop isn’t a conspiracy theory — it’s a conspiracy

“Conspiracy theorist” is one of the great insults of our day. It was thrown at me onstage the other night by the popular pseudo-guru and full-time intellectual fraud Malcolm Gladwell.

Debating in front of 3,000 people about the trustworthiness (or otherwise) of the mainstream media I brought up the Hunter Biden laptop story as an example of how much of the media cannot be trusted. “Oh my God,” wailed Gladwell, like an Upper East Side teenager, flailing his arms around in horror. His colleague — New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg — almost fell off her chair. Both rocked back and forth with laughter and forced histrionics. Fancy my bringing up such a nothing-burger of a story as that, they hooted. What a lot of “conspiracy theory” I appeared to have fallen into.

The Lying Media Told Me Not To Watch Netflix’s ‘Ancient Apocalypse,’ So I Did

Archeologists and their friends in the media are losing their minds over author and journalist Graham Hancock’s alternative ancient history Netflix series “Ancient Apocalypse.” According to The Guardian, “Ancient Apocalypse is the most dangerous show on Netflix.” It’s “an all out attack on archaeologists,” reads one hit piece on the series. It “promotes a whole lot of bunk,” Slate accuses. “[Graham’s] whole theory is steeped in racism and white supremacy,” alleges another.

The outrage articles don’t seem to have stopped anyone from watching “Ancient Apocalypse,” though. The series reportedly garnered 24.62 million hours of viewing in its first week of release, earning it a spot on Netflix’s “top 10” in 31 countries.

The Ukraine War one year on, Part 2: It’s going to be a long, cold winter

YESTERDAY I outlined the view of Western governments and media that Russia is on the back foot and that this is evident from the retreat at Kherson. In this second article I suggest that there is an alternative which could define what winning and losing might look like. The Russians, as I have already noted, are calling up their large pool of trained manpower. While they do this, they are making a calculated exchange of space in return for the time needed to do this. Why? Because once the wet weather of autumn and early winter is replaced any time now by a hard freeze, a winter offensive is entirely possible once the Ukrainians have lost momentum and used up their resources. The Russian Army is quite capable of this.

Sick in Canada? Just Kill Yourself

How a country’s totalitarian odyssey evolved into a dystopian hellscape.

The Great White North is looking more like a dystopian hellscape these days. Endless stories are streaming out of Canada where disabled, sick, or mentally ill Canucks are being encouraged to take their own life in lieu of medical care.

The most recent example surrounds Christine Gauthier, a 52-year-old veteran and wheelchair bound woman trying to get a wheelchair lift installed in her home to aid with her mobility.

Diversity actually

In our race-obsessed times, even innocent festive flicks are deemed ‘problematic’.

Less than 20 years after its release, Love Actually is already ‘out of date’, according to director Richard Curtis. The cheery 2003 romcom weaves together multiple love stories, all culminating in a festive denouement on Christmas Eve, which proves, as Hugh Grant narrates, that ‘Love actually is all around’. But looking back, it isn’t the corny lines or cheesy plot points that Curtis is cringing at. No, it is Love Actually’s ‘lack of diversity’ that apparently makes him ‘feel uncomfortable and a bit stupid’.

ChatGPT is not politically neutral

Since its launch last Wednesday, the AI language model ChatGPT has attracted more than a million users, scores of opinion pieces, and some very well-founded concerns. The chatbot may be among the most sophisticated of its kind, and was developed by OpenAI, the tech company — which was also behind the exhaustively-memed image generator DALL-E — founded in 2015 by a group including Elon Musk and Sam Altman.

Germany assesses credibility of rightwing coup plot amid further arrests

Without a cool truck your putsch is going nowhere.

Germany is trying to get the measure of how imminent a threat to the state was posed by the rightwing terror ring exposed on Wednesday, as police made further arrests in connection with the coup plot.

In their biggest ever raid targeting rightwing extremists, German authorities arrested 25 people suspected of plotting to overthrow the government, install a shadow regime led by a 71-year-old aristocrat, and seek talks with Russia to renegotiate its post-second world war settlement.

The head of Germany’s federal criminal police, Holger Münch, on Thursday revised the number of suspects upwards to 52, of whom 23 were currently in custody, adding that further raids and arrests were expected in the coming days.
