Our Strangelovian National Security Class

This sobering reflection on nuclear warfare on the Policy Tensor Substack has been making the rounds. Strongly urge you to read it. Excerpts:

Whether or not the annexed territories shall be considered Russian territory is not the important question. At this stage in the conflict, the important question is not even whether Russian elites believe that preventing Ukraine from becoming a Western bulwark is a vital Russian interest; although as CIA Director Burns wrote, it is indeed “the reddest of red lines” for Russian elites. Rather, as often happens in military conflict, the stakes have risen dramatically for Russia. Russia’s entire world position is now at stake. For if Russia cannot avoid military humiliation in Ukraine, it will not survive as a great power.

Hockey Canada executives need to leave before they ‘burn’ the organization ‘to the ground,’ minister says

Not your Grandmother’s hockey team. On 2nd thought it probably was.

The federal sport minister is ramping up her criticism of those leading Hockey Canada — an organization accused of mishandling allegations of gang rapes — by urging them to vacate their positions before the sports body is damaged beyond repair.

“I hope they understand the message and leave before they burn it to the ground,” Pascale St-Onge said Thursday after a cabinet meeting on Parliament Hill.

Her comments are just the latest salvo aimed at the national ice hockey body.

I can’t wait for Canada’s National Transgender Hockey team.

US reportedly believes Ukraine authorised Moscow car bomb

The Kremlin has welcomed a news report that US intelligence believes a bomb attack that killed a Russian commentator and journalist outside Moscow in August was authorised by Ukrainian government officials.

The report in the New York Times about the car bomb attack on Darya Dugina has not been confirmed and has been denied by Kyiv. The report said “parts” of the Ukrainian government were involved in the 20 August blast outside Moscow and that the US had no prior knowledge, provided no intelligence or other assistance, would have opposed it and “admonished” Ukrainian officials about it afterwards.

Poilievre pressured to explain misogynist tag used in his YouTube videos

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is under pressure to explain how a hidden misogynistic phrase was used to promote his YouTube videos over the last four years.

Global News revealed Thursday that 50 of Poilievre’s most recent YouTube videos included a hidden tag — #mgtow, which stands for “Men Going Their Own Way” — linked to misogynistic, mostly online communities. The tag helped promote Poilievre’s videos — such as his recent tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, videos from his leadership rallies and his messages on inflation and affordability — but was not visible to viewers.

Sabotage, ignorance or incompetence from within his team? I suspect a little of 2 & 3.

Federal agents see chargeable tax, gun-purchase case against Hunter Biden

Federal agents investigating President Biden’s son Hunter have gathered what they believe is sufficient evidence to charge him with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase, according to people familiar with the case. The next step is for the U.S. Attorney in Delaware, a Trump administration holdover, to decide on whether to file such charges, these people said.

The investigation into Hunter Biden began years ago, and became a central focus for then-president Donald Trump during his unsuccessful 2020 reelection effort. Initially, the investigation centered around Hunter Biden’s finances related to overseas business ties and consulting work. Over time, investigators with multiple agencies focused closely on whether he did not report all of his income, and whether he lied on gun purchase paperwork in 2018, according to the people familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing case.

Qatar uses gas to export Islam to Europe

The price of gas from the Middle East is high – in the long term.

“Gas as a holy war. Gas as a new fantasy of revenge on the West. It is the ‘gift of Allah’. There is a desire for conquest “. So writes with irony Kamel Daoud, the celebrated Algerian writer, in the French weekly Le Point.

Saudi Arabia (which is also financing the first mosque in Cuba at the moment) was the first stop on a recent tour of the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz which included the Emirates and Qatar.

Proposed Handgun Freeze Backed by Limited Data, Public Safety Committee Hears

The Liberal government’s plan to tighten firearms legislation by putting a freeze on handguns is backed by limited data on the potential impact this measure will have on reducing crime, the Commons public safety committee heard on Oct. 4.

“I can’t tell you exactly what impact it will have,” Assistant Deputy Minister of Public Safety Talal Dakalbab told the committee.

Dakalbab was responding to a question from Conservative MP Dane Lloyd.

The Myth of Clean

“Clean”, like “smart”, has become the prerequisite for all technology. Both are myths.

Smart technology is surveillance technology. It is not smarter because of its inherent qualities, but because it sends and receives data that allows it to be “smarter” in manipulating users. The smart part of smart technology comes from human beings. So does the stupid part when people sacrifice their privacy and independence for the benefits of technology being shaped to them.

Clean energy is even more of a myth. The Inflation Increase Act doles out another stream of billions toward the inefficient forms of energy generation that the government has been subsidizing for over 50 years because some Madison Avenue ad agency branded them “clean”.

Vile MSNBC: Pro-Lifers Want to Control Women, Have Sex With Minors

Joy Reid is so hateful that she spent an entire segment Wednesday night on her MSNBC show The ReidOut smearing pro-life conservatives and accusing them of really just wanting to control women. She even used a decades-old out-of-context soundbite from Daily Wire host Matt Walsh to claim conservatives want to get young girls pregnant so they don’t go to college and compete with men in the workplace.
