Two men who helped murder American journalist James Foley as part of the Islamic State group’s campaign of terror are facing justice in the US. One of them is being sentenced for murder on 19 August. James’s mother sat face-to-face with the other.

It was a cold morning in Virginia last year when Diane Foley sat opposite the man who kidnapped and helped murder her son, looking him fully in the face as they sat in a nondescript room in the courthouse where he would later be sentenced to life in prison.

When she entered the room, Alexanda Kotey was already there, seated amid a flurry of activity and noise from FBI agents and defence lawyers and minders.

The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission (USCC) recently warned that China’s interest in the agriculture of the United States poses both a serious economic challenge and a security risk to the United States.

China sits on 7-9% percent of the world’s arable land, 294 million acres, but is home to nearly 20% (1.4 billion in 2020) of the global population (nearly 8 billion in 2022). By comparison, the US has more than 375 million acres of arable land and a population of 329.5 million.

Doubts cast over Elon Musk’s Twitter bot claims

Filings made by Elon Musk’s legal team in his battle with Twitter have been questioned by leading bot researchers.

Botometer – an online tool that tracks spam and fake accounts – was used by Mr Musk in a countersuit against Twitter.

Using the tool, Mr Musk’s team estimated that 33% of “visible accounts” on the social media platform were “false or spam accounts”.

However, Botometer creator and maintainer, Kaicheng Yang, said the figure “doesn’t mean anything”

A Black Lives Matter activist whose Boston non-profit was shut down amid a federal fraud case against her after she allegedly blew thousands in charity donations on dinners, vacations and nail salon trips, is now requesting to apply for unemployment benefits.

Monica Cannon-Grant, 41, the former head of the non-profit ‘Violence in Boston,’ and her husband, Clark Grant, 38, were federally indicted in March for allegedly soliciting millions of dollars in donations following the 2020 killing of George Floyd that they used for their own personal gain.

They’re also accused of illegally collecting an estimated $100,000 in pandemic unemployment benefits and lying on a mortgage application.

In a recent study by the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California Berkeley, San Francisco’s downtown area was found to be only 31 percent active over the spring of 2022 when compared to pre-pandemic levels, with Cleveland at 36 percent and Portland at 41 percent.

Meanwhile, cities like Salt Lake City, Utah, Bakersfield, California and Columbus Ohio are enjoying the fastest comeback, seeing their downtown activity go up by more than 110 percent since 2019.

British ‘Beatle’ El Shafee Elsheikh faces life sentence for role in Islamic State beheadings

A US federal court will today sentence a British-born jihadist to a potential life term for his involvement with a brutal Islamic State terror cell that kidnapped, tortured and beheaded western hostages in Syria.

El Shafee Elsheikh, 33, was convicted by jury in Virginia earlier this year on eight charges related to his role in the notorious gang of British terrorists known by their captives as the Beatles. The jury delivered a unanimous verdict that Elsheikh was part of the hostage-taking gang that beheaded three Americans, two British aid workers and two Japanese men under the Isis regime.

Unexplained excess deaths outstrip those from virus as medics call figures ‘terrifying’

The effects of lockdown may now be killing more people than are dying of Covid, official statistics suggest.

Figures for excess deaths from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that around 1,000 more people than usual are currently dying each week from conditions other than the virus.

The Telegraph understands that the Department of Health has ordered an investigation into the figures amid concern that the deaths are linked to delays to and deferment of treatment for conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Ahmed Hussen has asked Canadian Heritage to “look closely at the situation” after what he called “unacceptable behaviour” by Laith Marouf, a senior consultant involved in the government-funded project to combat racism in broadcasting.

Canadian ban on handgun imports kicks in with exceptions

As of Friday, individuals and businesses are no longer able to import restricted handguns into Canada, with limited exceptions.

The move announced earlier this month is aimed at expediting a key pillar of the federal effort to cap the number of handguns in the country.

In May, the Liberal government announced a plan to implement a freeze on importing, buying, selling or otherwise transferring handguns to help quell firearm-related violence.

Longtime B.C. Liberal MLA removed from caucus after questioning climate change science

B.C. Liberal leader Kevin Falcon has removed longtime MLA John Rustad from the party caucus after Rustad boosted a social media post casting doubt on climate change science and urging people to “celebrate CO2.”

In posts on both Facebook and Twitter, Rustad, the MLA for the Nechako Lakes riding west of Prince George, shared a graphic and post arguing that people had been “hoodwinked” by climate change science and they should be glad CO2 is being emitted into the atmosphere.

Sounds like they’re a bit fearful about following the science.
