Legault says he’s against multiculturalism because ‘it’s important to have culture where we integrate’

Ahead of Fête nationale celebrations this week, Premier François Legault said he’s against the idea of multiculturalism, saying it is a threat to the French language and Quebec culture.

“It’s important that we don’t put all cultures on the same level; that’s why we oppose multiculturalism,” Legault told reporters Thursday. “We prefer to concentrate on what we call interculturalism, where we have one culture, the Quebec culture, and we try to integrate newcomers. I think new people coming to Quebec add to our culture, but it’s important to have culture where we integrate, especially to our language.”

Makes sense. Rare for a Canadian politician.

With the nation’s capital bracing for anticipated anti-mandate “freedom” movement protests during Canada Day weekend, interim Conservative Leader Candice Bergen says her MPs are free to attend.

“I support peaceful and legal demonstrations, and if my MPs want to be there, they’re free to do whatever they want, and they’ll answer to their constituents,” Bergen said in an interview on CTV’s Question Period airing on Sunday.

This morning, in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a majority of the Supreme Court decided that “The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion.” Roe has been centrally “responsible for the emergence of the conservative legal movement”; conservatives, at least for now, have won that fight.

Ukraine Urges U.S. To Provide ‘Fire Parity’ With Russia As Struggle In East Worsens

Ukraine’s top general has told his U.S. counterpart that his country desperately needs “fire parity” with Russia to “stabilize” the difficult situation in the east, where Kyiv’s forces have suffered setbacks against Moscow’s troops backed by powerful artillery bombardments.

“We discussed the operational situation and the delivery flow of international technical assistance,” General Valeriy Zaluzhniy wrote in an online posting after holding a phone call on June 24 with General Mark Milley, the U.S. chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Kyiv has received billions of dollars in aid from its Western partners since Moscow’s unprovoked invasion began on February 24.

Eighteen killed as hundreds try to cross into Spain’s Melilla enclave

Eighteen people have died after a mass attempt to cross from Morocco into Spain’s enclave of Melilla.

About 2,000 people approached Melilla at dawn on Friday and more than 500 managed to enter a border control area after cutting a fence with shears, the Spanish government’s local delegation said in a statement.

Moroccan officials said late on Friday that 13 people had died of injuries sustained in the incursion, in addition to five who were confirmed dead earlier in the day.

How much influence should politicians have over police?

Controversy erupted this week when allegations came to light that the Liberal government may have tried to interfere in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) investigation into the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting where 17 people were killed.

According to RCMP Supt. Darren Campbell’s notes, RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki said in a phone call that she had promised the Prime Minister’s Office and then-Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair that the RCMP would publicly release information about the weapons the gunman used. Lucki was reportedly angry when the RCMP did not do so.

The Liberal government is alleged to have wanted the information made public to further their gun control agenda. Critics and opposition politicians have accused the government of attempting to use the tragedy for political gain. Lucki, Blair and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have denied that there was interference in the investigation.

Police investigate Ontario town council meeting where speech against LGBTQ2+ community was made

Ontario Provincial Police are looking into the Tuesday council meeting in tiny Norwich, Ont., where a man facing criminal charges for taking down Pride flags spoke for half an hour about his opposition to the LGBTQ2+ community, particularly transgender people.

“I can tell you that we are aware of the council meeting and information is being reviewed at this time,” said Oxford OPP Const. Patti Cote.

Norwich Township council has released a statement saying it had asked for legal advice before allowing businessman Jacob (Jake) Dey to address the Tuesday meeting, leaving many “hurt and unsafe” by “what many consider hateful comments.”

Norway shooting: Mohammedan charged with terrorism after deadly Oslo attack

 

A 42-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder and terrorist acts after a shooting in the centre of Norway’s capital, Oslo.

Two people were killed and 21 injured in the overnight attack on a busy nightlife district.

There was gunfire at about 01:00 local time (23:00 GMT) on Saturday, in three locations including a gay bar.

Shots were fired at the London Pub, a popular LGBTQ+ venue, and near the Herr Nilsen jazz club and a pub.

Norwegian Iranian being investigated for terrorist shooting at Gay bar and 2 other locations

Two people were killed and 21 injured in three consecutive shootings in Norway’s capital, Oslo, including in a gay bar. All Pride events have now been cancelled.

Authorities in Oslo said a 42-year-old Norwegian national of Iranian origin, who was previously known to police, had been arrested within minutes of the shootings and was believed to be the sole perpetrator.

The state prosecutor, Christian Hatlo, told a news conference on Saturday that 10 people had been seriously injured in the shootings and 11 more were slightly wounded. Two weapons, a pistol and an automatic rifle, had been seized, he said.

It is a sign of our times that movements have emerged to teach pedophilia in schools and to subject children to drag queen performances. Perversions like this are borne of an insidious attitude known as moral relativism.

As the term suggests, moral relativism is the belief that morality is subjective rather than objective. That is, what is right and wrong varies from person to person instead of emerging from a fixed universal standard, meaning that there are no ultimate moral truths. Before examining why such a view is incoherent, it is worth considering why ordinary people have been seduced into believing it. There are two major reasons. The first is that, because there is widespread disagreement about matters of right and wrong, morality is assumed to be subjective. The second stems from a pervasive attitude that it is “intolerant” to uphold a fixed standard of morality. Both reasons are flimsy.

Our Russia strategy has backfired … Biden is more likely to be toppled

Whatever the origins of the Ukraine war, the West and Russia are now engaged in a broader confrontation that is not confined to the military struggle: the war has become a competition in pain-tolerance.

This is, as Thomas Schelling wrote, “a conscious process of dirty bargaining”, whereby each side tries to inflict pain and suffering on the other side until one or both yield. Put simply, the West and Russia are playing a violent version of the schoolyard game Mercy. The centrepiece of the West’s effort to inflict pain on Russia is what the historian Nicholas Mulder has called “the economic weapon”, which has been deployed at unprecedented scale. The centrepiece of Russia’s effort to inflict pain on the West is the commodities weapon. In this competition in pain-tolerance, it is not immediate whether the West or Russia has the upper hand.
