UK scientists suggest many more have Omicron coronavirus variant than reported

LONDON, Dec 18 (Reuters) – Scientific advisors to Britain’s government said it was “almost certain” that hundreds of thousands of people were being infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant every day and hospital admissions were likely to surge.

“Currently observed numbers of Omicron infections admitted to hospital in the UK are probably around one tenth of the true number because the data lags of hospital reporting,” the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies said in minutes of a meeting on Dec. 16.

Covid-19: More than 10,000 new Omicron cases found in UK

A major incident has been declared in London and more than 10,000 new Omicron cases have been confirmed in the UK, as the variant surges across the country.

A further 90,418 daily Covid cases have been reported across the UK on Saturday, after days of record highs.

Scientific advisers have warned England’s hospital admissions could reach 3,000 a day without new measures.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the major incident in the capital showed “how serious things are”.

Stop criticizing Quebec’s ban on religious symbols, Erin O’Toole warns Conservative MPs in tense meeting

OTTAWA – Erin O’Toole has told Conservative MPs to stop speaking out publicly against Quebec’s Bill 21 and raise concerns about it at party caucus meetings – or not at all.

The warning from the Tory leader and his closest allies came during a tense caucus meeting this week in which some MPs criticized O’Toole for refusing to categorically condemn a teacher’s withdrawal of a classroom in Quebec because she wears a hijab.

Of course he would… Toronto City Council Approves Funds for Legal Challenge to Quebec’s Secularism Law

Whatever O’Toole’s motivation it’s the right decision. The alleged controversy over Quebec’s religious symbols ban is media manufactured. Only the Islamists along with their useful idiots in the media and the usual cast of vote whoring pols support sharia law in our schools.

Rex Murphy: The not-so-magical erasure of J.K. Rowling

Imagine if you were a young woman, with a child, living on your own in hard circumstances — small income, very poor housing. You’d feel pretty bleak.

You’re living, or rather just getting by, in England, on the bottom end of the economic scale, with no influential family or social contacts. Kind of a Dickensian scenario. You’ve gone through a very turbulent time personally, are without employment, and depressed over what seems an inevitably rocky future.

Amazon’s patents could turn whole neighborhoods into ‘surveilled space’

Amazon has registered 17 new patents for biometric technology intended to help its doorbell cameras identify “suspicious” people by scent, skin texture, fingerprints, eyes, voice, and gait.

The tech giant has been developing its doorbell security camera system since 2018, when Amazon acquired the firm named Ring and, with it, the original technology. According to media reports, Jeff Bezos’ company is now preparing to enable the devices to identify “suspicious” people with the help of biometric technology, based on skin texture, gait, finger, voice, retina, iris, and even odor.

China is buying up the critical green-revolution minerals sector in Canada and elsewhere. Enough already

A week ago, the shareholders of Canada’s Neo Lithium approved the sale of the TSX Venture Exchange-listed company to China’s Zijin Mining for about $960-million. The announcement received little coverage and appears to have bothered almost no one in the federal government. It should have.

While Neo Lithium is hardly a household name, and the company is relatively small, its purchase should have raised a stink not just in Ottawa but in Washington and among North America’s electric-car makers. That’s because lithium is an essential component of the batteries that power electric vehicles (EVs), a suddenly burgeoning market, and vast amounts of the global supply of the light, silvery-white metal are going to Chinese companies.

Biden Administration Silent Against Iran’s Mullahs’ Terror Threat

In the wake of the largest seizure of arms and fuel from Iranian terror groups to date, the Biden administration has remained silent.

The US Department of Justice announced on December 7, 2021 the successful forfeiture of two large caches of Iranian weapons. The weapons reportedly included advanced arms such as “171 guided anti-tank missiles, eight surface-to-air missiles, land attack cruise missile components, anti-ship cruise missile components, thermal weapon optics and other components for missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles [drones]”. The U.S. Navy also seized Iranian petroleum products from “four foreign-flagged tankers in or around the Arabian Sea while en route to Venezuela. These actions represent the government’s largest-ever forfeitures of fuel and weapons shipments from Iran.”

Germany: COVID demonstrations planned across country

Opponents of vaccinations and the German government’s coronavirus policies were planning to hold demonstrations in several German cities on Saturday.

The largest protest was expected to be held in the northern port city of Hamburg, with around 8,000 registered attendees. Under the slogan “Hands off our children,” they planned to march through the city center, police said.

Vaccinations for children are beginning in Germany, following recommendations made by the country’s top vaccine body. However, parents are divided on the issue.

Oh No! Scientists watch giant ‘doomsday’ glacier in Antarctica with concern

Twenty years ago, an area of ice thought to weigh almost 500bn tonnes dramatically broke off the Antarctic continent and shattered into thousands of icebergs into the Weddell Sea.

The 1,255-sq-mile (3,250-sq-km) Larsen B ice shelf was known to be melting fast but no one had predicted that it would take just one month for the 200-metre-thick behemoth to completely disintegrate.

Glaciologists were shocked as much by the speed as by the scale of the collapse. “This is staggering. It’s just broken apart. It fell over like a wall and has broken as if into hundreds of thousands of bricks”, said one.
