U.S. hikes duty on Canadian softwood lumber to 17.9% — twice the old rate

Officials from various Canadian governments and the lumber industry are expressing disappointment that the U.S. has decided to go ahead with a plan to double the amount of duty it imposes on softwood lumber that comes from Canada.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Commerce said it will proceed to impose duties of 17.9 per cent, on average on softwood lumber imported from Canada. That’s more than twice the previous 8.99 per cent rate.

The effect of this policy is to reward past, and incentivize future, terrorism.

Last night, at Lady Mitchell Hall at Cambridge University, the Canadian psychologist and intellectual Dr Jordan Peterson made an appearance that has been more than two years in the making.

His speech was was preceded by an announcement by two of the university proctors, dressed in full academic robes, that they were “present to uphold freedom of speech.”

New ‘Rittenhouse law’ would hold prosecutors accountable

An Oklahoma state senator has introduced legislation that would force the state to compensate defendants accused of murder but later found not guilty due to justifiable homicide, and named it ‘Kyle’s law’ after Kyle Rittenhouse.

Introduced on Tuesday by State Senator Nathan Dahm, a Republican who is running for the US Senate, ‘Kyle’s Law’ would force Oklahoma to cover the legal fees and damages incurred by anyone accused of murder but found to have been acting in self-defense, if the defendant could prove they were the victim of “malicious prosecution.”

Darrell Brooks shared pro-Hitler memes, called for violence against white people

The ex-con charged over the deaths of six people at a Wisconsin Christmas parade shared social media posts calling for violence against white people — and suggesting “Hitler was right” for killing Jews.

Darrell Brooks Jr. — who has a decades-long rap sheet — shared a series of disturbing memes and messages on social media, most of which have been deleted since his arrest for Sunday’s deadly carnage.

They included numerous posts attacking cops, comparing them to Ku Klux Klan members and calling them “violent street gangs” — as well as calling for violence toward white people, according to screenshots.

GUNTER: Liberals don’t have a mandate to do much of anything

Get used to it. Whenever the Trudeau Liberal government climbs up on a soapbox to claim it has a mandate for anything – much less the complete reordering of Canada’s society and economy – I am going to point out that they were elected with the smallest share of the popular vote of any federal government in Canadian history.
