Arming the Taliban—But Not Cops?

Lawmakers take aim at a program equipping police with military-surplus gear.

Can anyone forget the images of Taliban fighters riding around Kabul on U.S. vehicles, wearing U.S.-supplied uniforms, and carrying U.S.-made rifles? In addition to stranding people in Afghanistan, the Americans also abandoned Humvees; trucks and armored vehicles, including Mine-Resistant Ambush Protection (MRAP) vehicles valued at about $800,000 each; artillery; aging but operable helicopters and attack aircraft; drones; artillery and mortars; and millions of rounds of ammunition. No one is quite sure how many of these items were disabled or are too sophisticated for the Taliban to operate. Estimates of their value range from $24 billion to $83 billion. Whatever the true figure, U.S. agencies and a few independent investigators agree that close to one-third of what Washington spent on the Afghan defense forces went for war matériel now held by an enemy we ousted 20 years ago.

“The Basic Message Is Hatred”: The Persecution of Christians, September 2021

Afghanistan: Muslims linked to the Islamic State murdered four Christians. While trying to escape the country, a Christian family was intercepted by the jihadists. According to a local source:

“ISIS asked them, ‘we have tape about you that you are no longer Muslims. So is it true that you are not Muslim?’ They said, ‘Yes, we are not Muslims anymore. We are Christians.’ So the men of this family were killed at the spot. The children and women, they let them go.”

Also and in keeping with what several international human rights groups are warning, former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wrote an article in which he expressed his concern that a “genocide” of Christians is brewing in Afghanistan…

The Alec Baldwin shooting: everything was done wrong

The big news this week about Alec Baldwin is that he shot two people on the set of his movie, Rust. Director Joel Souza was wounded but will make a full recovery. Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was less lucky. She died, leaving her husband Matthew Hutchins and their young son. She was only 42 years old.

It now seems clear there were violations of safety protocols. Mostly, decades of gunplay in films have led to very few accidents. One of the most publicized involved Jon-Erik Hexum, who shot himself in the head on the set of his TV show Cover Up.

The anatomy of a media smear

Why did the media spread falsehoods about those pro-Chappelle counter-protesters?

On Wednesday staff at Netflix walked out in protest against Dave Chappelle’s new Netflix special, The Closer, which they claim is transphobic. This attempt on the part of Netflix employees and others to censor the streaming giant’s output was worrying. But so was what happened next.

Protesters were standing outside Netflix’s offices in Los Gatos, California, busily complaining about Chappelle’s supposed bigotry, when they were joined by some unexpected guests. Comedians Vito Gesualdi and Dick Masterson turned up with placards that read ‘Jokes are funny’ and ‘We like Dave’.

Washington Post mocked for claiming Biden suffering through ‘vulgar taunts’ on ‘another level’ from other politicians

The Washington Post earned US President Joe Biden little sympathy with a piece claiming that the increasing “vulgar taunts” are “on another level,” compared to the usual insults politicians face.

“The current eruption of anti-Biden signs and chants,” the Post’s piece claims, is “far more vulgar and widespread” than the heated responses recent presidents such as Donald Trump and Barack Obama have faced.

CNN Calls for Press to Ditch Objectivity, Portray GOP as Threat to the Country

CNN continued to escalate its dangerous rhetoric against Republicans on Sunday, as so-called “Reliable Sources” host Brian Stelter and LA Times columnist Jackie Calmes urged the press to ditch objectivity when reporting about Republicans and just portray them as threats to the country. She even claimed that’s not what she wanted to do while she actively called for it.

‘We hope it’s not an adversary here on Earth’: NASA leader suggests UFOs could be aliens

The leader of NASA hinted at the possibility that some UFOs might be extraterrestrial life forms or beings from an alternate universe this week.

Bill Nelson, who has served as President Joe Biden’s NASA administrator since May, said Tuesday he didn’t know for sure what some of the unidentified aerial phenomena seen by Navy pilots are. He said, however, that “we hope it’s not an adversary here on Earth that has that kind of technology,” bringing up the topic of the search for alien life and the mystery of UFOs unprompted after a back-and-forth about what would happen if a massive asteroid hit the Earth.

Facebook employees tried to suppress conservative news outlets, report shows

Facebook’s bias is showing — again.

The tech giant’s employees have consistently pushed to suppress or de-platform right-wing outlets such as Breitbart, despite objections from managers trying to avoid political blowback, a scathing report by the Wall Street Journal revealed.

The internal debates — captured in message-board conversations reviewed by the publication — fuel new concerns that the platform is treating news outlets differently based on political slant.

Douglas Todd: What do Indigenous voices say about immigration?

As a First Nations leader, what would you think of Canada’s immigration policy?

“It’s a bit late to ask that question,” answers Tsawwassen First Nations Chief Ken Baird, with a wry smile.

Indeed, Canada’s Indigenous people have never really been asked how they feel about immigration policy, despite experiencing wave after wave of newcomers.

The latest celebrity must have? A trans child!

The Facts of Life passed from adult to child have become fictions passed from child to adult

Hard luck, Madonna, your lovingly assembled rainbow family is no longer the most cutting-edge crew on the showbiz block. If you want to excel as an A-list parent these days, you need a trans child to show off on social media.

Jamie Lee Curtis has revealed that her child, born Thomas, now answers to the name of Ruby. The 62-year-old actress has declared to a waiting world — via People magazine — that the most difficult thing about adjusting to this unforeseen circumstance is calling them by their new name.

Will More Eco-Authoritarianism Come From COP26?

Will world leaders use lockdown policies to lower climate emissions?

Our international political class is set to descend on Glasgow this November for the United Nations climate change summit, COP26. A swarm seems to be an apt comparison given that 1,500 waste disposal staff are set to strike for the duration of the event, leaving the unnecessary trash produced by environmental devotees flowing out of bags and bins for all to see. And, like flies, the bad ideas proposed to revolutionize everyone’s lives for the worst are bound to be in abundance.
