Are there any photos of Canadian PM Justin Trudeau where he isn’t in blackface? I’m struggling to remember the last time I saw one. There he was again yesterday, this wokest of world leaders, this darling of centrist Twitter, covered in black facepaint and sticking his tongue out. You know, like those dark-skinned foreigners do. The pic is from an Arabian Nights fancy-dress party – man, the bourgeoisie are weird – that Trudeau attended in 2001, when he was 29. Twenty-nine. If you’re on the cusp of 30, at the dawn of this new millennium, and you still don’t know it’s wrong to don blackface, there’s something wrong with you.

Erin O’Toole disappointed after election loss, triggers campaign review

Me sad.

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole says he’s triggered a review looking into his party’s election loss, underscoring that he’s committed to making sure the Tories are battle-ready for the next one.

O’Toole appeared at his party’s broadcast studio in downtown Ottawa striking a less spirited tone than during his speech early Tuesday after the election results first came in.

…The Conservative leader did say the party came within 2,000 votes in 30 ridings and will work to close that gap.

Black Lives Matter activists demonstrated Monday against “racist” COVID-19 vaccine mandates, staging a rally outside a restaurant they said used the city’s mandate to deny service to Black patrons.

The crowd protesting in front of Carmine’s restaurant in Manhattan chanted “Carmine’s are racist,” according to reports.

For the poor of the city, the majority, scraping together a few hundred Afghanis, a couple of dollars, to stave off starvation is the biggest challenge.

Millions live in desperate poverty in a country that has received huge sums in foreign aid. The money left over that might help them, around $9bn in central bank reserves, is frozen by the Americans to keep it away from the Taliban.

More than 65 percent of Jewish students on America’s college campuses report feeling unsafe, and around 50 percent say they have hidden their religious identity to avoid physical or verbal attacks, according to a recent poll.

A rising number of Jewish students feel unsafe on college campuses as anti-Israel and anti-Zionist organizations mount increasing attacks on the Jewish state and its supporters, according to the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, an advocacy organization that conducted the first-ever poll to examine the rates of anti-Semitism faced by Jewish college students.

Iran enriches uranium as the West watches

Iran may now be capable of producing enough weapons-grade uranium for a single nuclear warhead within just a month. That’s according to US experts who were quoted in The New York Times last Wednesday after reviewing classified new data from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The experts weren’t permitted to speak in an official capacity, but told the newspaper off the record they think Iran could have the necessary materials to arm a warhead in the foreseeable future. But they think it will be some time before Tehran will have a deployable nuclear device.

The UK is facing a “baby shortage”, with fertility rates dropping to nearly half those seen in the Post-War Boom, raising concerns over potential “long-term” economic stagnation.

A report from Social Market Foundation (SMF) found that in 2020, the total fertility rate (TFR) – the number of children per woman – stood at 1.58 in England and Wales, nearly half of the peak following the Second World War of 2.93. Scotland saw the sharpest decline, with a fertility rate of 1.29.

What’s behind low voter turnout in Canada’s election?

Preliminary data from Canada’s pandemic election is showing a low voter turnout, sparking conversations among experts around its impact on the country’s democracy.

As of Tuesday morning with 98 per cent of polls reporting, 15,993,868 of 27,366,297 registered electors showed up to vote — a turnout rate of 58.4 per cent so far.

I recall a poll that found a sizable chunk of those surveyed say they were unimpressed with all the mainstream parties. That’s not mentioned in the article.

Traffic was blocked on Tuesday in both directions on Melbourne’s West Gate Freeway after people angry about forced vaccinations cut off the road. The rally in the Australian city was as violent as the first one on Monday.

The government of Victoria province demanded that construction workers get vaccinated, with the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) backing the decision. Many of the workers were outraged and are planning to hold daily rallies to make their point
