GOLDSTEIN: Carbon tax will cost 200,000 jobs, $1,800 per worker, says study

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax of $170 per tonne of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 will cost more than 200,000 Canadian jobs and $1,800 annually in less income for the average worker, according to a study by the Fraser Institute.

The study — Estimated Impacts of a $170 Carbon Tax in Canada — by Ross McKitrick and Elmira Aliakbari, also concludes Trudeau’s carbon tax will cause a 2.1% drop in Canada’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

George Floyd death: How will jurors be selected in Derek Chauvin trial?

…A pool of eligible local citizens has been called to appear by Hennepin County in Minnesota. From them, a jury of 12 and four alternates will be selected. It could take weeks.

Although it is highly unlikely potential jurors will have no prior knowledge of the case – George Floyd’s death in May last year in Minneapolis inspired weeks of global protests – they will be questioned to determine whether they will be able to judge Derek Chauvin fairly.

The prosecution and defence can both ask Judge Peter Cahill to dismiss a potential juror “for cause” if they perceive bias. The prosecution can also dismiss nine potential jurors – and the defence team 15 – without giving any reason, although this can be objected to.

Kielburgers torpedo relationship with Liberals — ‘We never prorogued Parliament’

Kielburgers torpedo relationship with Liberals — ‘We never prorogued Parliament’

It was maybe an hour or so into the Kielburger brothers’ testimony on Monday when Nathaniel Erskine-Smith finally cut to the heart of the matter. The Liberal MP, in his mild and polite way, absolutely skewered the Kielburgers over the heartbreaking story shared by U.S. journalist Reed Cowan. Cowan had donated to WE Charity, and helped raise a sum reportedly running into the millions. Cowan was told by WE that the funds had gone to the construction of a school in Kenya, and that a plaque honouring Cowan’s late son Wesley had been put up in his honour. The problem is that the plaque was later taken down and replaced by another plaque, honouring another donor, which Cowan discovered on a subsequent visit.

It’s difficult to like the Kielbugger boys.

Mozambique insurgency: Mohammedans beheading children, aid agency reports

Aid agency Save the Children says Islamist militants are beheading children as young as 11 in Mozambique’s northern province of Cabo Delgado.

One mother told the agency she had had to watch as her 12-year-old son was killed in this way close to where she was hiding with her other children.

More than 2,500 people have been killed and 700,000 have fled their homes since an Islamist insurgency began in 2017.

The militants have pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group.

Justin hardest hit… Canadians’ view of relations with China hits all time low: poll

A poll by the Angus-Reid Institute of 5,004 Canadians from Feb. 26 to March 3 has found that opinions of China sit at record lows and that there can be no moving forward until two detained Canadians are released from prison.

Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were arrested by Chinese authorities on Dec. 10, 2018, shortly after the detention in Canada of Chinese Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. extradition warrant. Here are the results from the poll.

No, you’re not imagining the media’s Pravda-ization

Matt Taibbi is that rare breed – an honest leftist journalist. And make no mistake about his leftism, for this is a man who thinks Noam Chomsky is a great thinker. Despite that serious ideological confusion on his part, Taibbi understands something profoundly important in American politics; namely, that our media has become completely corrupt, and more closely represents the media in Soviet Russia than the media in a free country with a First Amendment. If you haven’t yet, you must read his article, “The Sovietization of the American Press.”

Taibbi, who has collected examples of Soviet newspapers over the years so he knows whereof he speaks, says that, in 2021, there is nothing to distinguish the American media from the Soviet press.

Chicago’s Monumental Mistake – A committee to “review” the city’s public shrines shows contempt for American history.

Chicago’s Monumental Mistake – A committee to “review” the city’s public shrines shows contempt for American history.

Last summer, Chicago, like many cities, was engulfed by riots and looting. For several nights, crowds, including professional anarchists, surrounded the statue of Christopher Columbus in Grant Park, the city’s central meeting place. They repeatedly tried to topple Columbus from his pedestal. The police deployed to protect the statue; violent clashes resulted. In the dead of night, without notice or consultation, Chicago’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot, ordered the statue, along with another Columbus statue located in Chicago’s Little Italy, removed.

COVID-19 Hysteria and Panic – A reflection on popular delusions and the madness of crowds.

In 1841, Charles Mackay wrote a 702-page book titled Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds. The book details investment hysteria and panic, but it’s really about human nature, something that doesn’t change throughout recorded history. I will show the reader, in this essay, how we are experiencing popular delusions and the madness of crowds, right now, with the current corona virus, COVID-19 hysteria and panic.

Discovering WW1 tunnel of death hidden in France for a century

Not since the 1970s has there been such an important discovery from the Great War in France. In woods on a ridge not far from the city of Reims, the bodies of more than 270 German soldiers have lain for more than a century – after they died the most agonising deaths imaginable.

Forgotten in the confusion of war, their exact location was till now a mystery – one which the French and German authorities were in no hurry to elucidate. But thanks to the work of a father-and-son team of local historians, the entrance to the Winterberg tunnel on the Chemin des Dames battlefront has been found.

Derek Chauvin lawyers ‘gravely concerned’ about juror impartiality after George Floyd civil settlement, ask for trial delay

Lawyers for Minneapolis ex-cop and accused murderer Derek Chauvin are desperate to postpone his trial, hoping to find impartial jurors to hear the high-profile case after the city of Minneapolis delivered a massive settlement.

With nine jurors seated as of Monday afternoon, the defense was granted a motion to eventually recall those who’d already been seated before the city of Minneapolis delivered the largest-ever civil settlement to the family of George Floyd on Friday.
