English Montreal School Board to launch legal challenge against Quebec French-language law

Another group has announced it will launch a legal challenge against Quebec’s controversial language reform law.

Bill 96 was passed in the provincial legislature earlier this week.

The English Montreal School Board (EMSB) announced late Thursday evening it has hired a legal firm to help it contest the validity of Bill 96, An Act Respecting French, the official and common language of Quebec.

This feels like something Indonesia would do, not a modern parliamentary democracy. Whoops sorry, I meant parliamentary dictatorship.

Opinion: Take aim at legal guns, too, in fight against violence

In a recent opinion piece in the Gazette , Concordia political science associate professor Noah Schwartz says calls for gun bans are among typical “knee-jerk” reactions to gun violence that “drain precious resources” that could be better invested in long-term solutions to crime and violence in Canada.

Schwartz seems to have accepted the argument — often presented by the gun lobby — that gun violence is mostly limited to criminal gangs “in specific neighbourhoods” and that “licensed, vetted” gun owners are already “heavily regulated” enough.

Multiple protests for the ‘liberation of Palestine’ in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg

Hundreds of people in Montreal waved Palestinian flags, drove through the streets and gathered in front of Israel’s consul general in Westmount in support of Palestine in wake of the growing violence between Israel and Hamas.

Pro-Israeli, pro-Palestinian supporters clash near Manitoba Legislature

Separated by a line of around 50 Winnipeg Police Service officers, approximately 50 Israel supporters and 300 Palestine supporters volleyed death threats, insults and bottles of water.

Then of course there’s Toronto… Diversity is our Strength!

Se Above vids – from the CBC – “Among the myriad of Palestinian flags were dozens of Israeli flags flown by counter-demonstrators in the square. Police appeared to set up a barrier to separate opposing protesters. As of Saturday night, police had no information about any arrests made in connection with the rally.”

From the StarA pro-Israel group of around 100 people were also protesting at the scene, with police setting up barricades to separate opposing protesters. Toronto police say there are no reports of violence at this time, and no arrests or charges have been made.

Ottawa tables legislation to send striking Port of Montreal workers back on the job

Federal Labour Minister Filomena Tassi has tabled back-to-work legislation for the Port of Montreal’s 1,150 dock workers, who have been on strike since Monday morning.

The legislation, set to be debated Tuesday afternoon, would require employees to return to work after the bill passes. It would also extend their previous collective agreement until a new one is negotiated.

The legislation would also prevent any strikes or lockouts until a new agreement is signed and impose a mediator-arbitrator on both parties if negotiations fail again. Workers at the port also walked off the job seven months ago.

Montreal thugs attack activist who opposes puberty blockers for kids

Can children consent to using puberty blockers? Really think about that question for a moment.

Can a child, whose portion of their brain responsible for good judgement won’t be fully developed until their mid-twenties, actually be expected to anticipate the physical and psychological consequences associated with believing that something is inherently wrong with their body and appearance, requiring medical intervention?

Toronto, Montreal see thousands protest against COVID restrictions

Canada’s largest city saw what appeared to be its largest protest against municipal and provincial lockdown restrictions yet. On a day where temperatures were above the seasonal average, a crowd that seemed to be in the thousands gathered on the lawns of Ontario’s legislature, Queen’s Park, just as they had nearly a year earlier.

Protesters started to fill the area shortly before noon, with police taking a mostly hands-off approach to the crowd, unlike previous weeks.
