Roughly 35 kilometres to the west, in the town of Barrhead, four flags have been removed from municipal flag poles. Soon two crosswalks will be redone: one for pride, another supporting people with disabilities.

Using the online alias “Dark Foreigner,” an Ottawa man made hate propaganda videos and images for an international neo-Nazi organization to promote hatred against Jews and others, and to recruit people to spread that hate, federal Crown prosecutors alleged at the beginning of his trial on Monday.

Patrick Gordon Macdonald, 27, pleaded not guilty to participating in terrorist activity, facilitating terrorist activity and committing an offence for the terrorist group Atomwaffen Division in 2018 and 2019.

Atomwaffen Division — now defunct — was later branded a terrorist organization in Canada in 2021.

In a process expected to take seven years, researchers will collect and analyse all of Hitler’s speeches delivered between 1933 and 1945. The aim, they say, is to move the academic focus away from Mein Kampf and provide a better insight into the dictator’s use of propaganda during his years in power. Hitler delivered a total of 1,525 speeches from 1919 to 1945.

Or at least enough success to have sparked an open letter republished on many individual Substacks calling on Substack to get rid of Nazis, a counter–open letter calling on it to maintain its liberal content-moderation standards, a statement from Substack co-founders Hamish McKenzie, Chris Best, and Jairaj Sethi explicitly stating that they do not plan to ban Nazis from the platform, a bunch of Substackers responding by leaving or threatening to leave if Substack doesn’t moderate the content it hosts more aggressively, and a spate of news coverage of all of the above.
