New $674.5M capital plan would increase shelter beds by 1,600 over next decade

Over half of Toronto’s shelter spaces for the unhoused aren’t financially sustainable, according to city civil servants proposing a new 10-year plan to replace them with city-owned facilities.

Staff are making the pitch in a capital plan aimed at fundamentally changing the way the city operates its shelters for people experiencing homelessness.

The city added thousands of shelter beds during the pandemic to create necessary space between people using the service, signing leases with hotels to provide the accommodations. But staff have long-warned that those leases are set to expire in late 2024 and are not financially viable in the long-term.

John Tory broke ethic rules over relationship with Bimbo & 2026 World Cup vote: report

Former Toronto mayor John Tory broke city council’s code of conduct when he had a relationship with a woman that started when she was a junior subordinate in his office, the integrity commissioner has found.

In a report released Thursday, Jonathan Batty finds that Tory, who resigned in February after the Star revealed his relationship with the young woman, breached two articles of the code of conduct.

Tory “failed to observe the terms of the Human Resources Management and Ethical Framework” for council members staff, Batty found in a 122-page report.

Sad spectacle of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT may be the tip of the iceberg

Metrolinx CEO Phil Verster’s press conference last week, wherein he announced he could not announce a planned opening date for the provincial transit agency’s Eglinton Crosstown project, was a sad spectacle for a bunch of reasons.

What can you even say about a delayed non-announcement about a delayed project, delivered by a guy who makes $856,551 a year and is now urging the public to — seriously — “give us some space” to fix a bunch of mysterious problems and get it open at an unspecified date?

Toronto Police need to explain second shutdown at Queen’s Park

For the second time in a week, major streets in the core of Toronto were shut down on Sunday.

Also, for the second time in a week, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) was not overly forthcoming in why those shutdowns were happening.

This is a case of the police serving as a private army to suppress citizen rights.

Transit authorities were converting a surface rail line to a subway, which meant lowering one set of tracks to connect with another, underground set. “We have been saying that, while the allegations may be true, we felt that there was more to it, and we should look at the circumstances that may have contributed to the actions,” said David Betty, president of the Jamaican Canadian Association, who watched Clarke’s plea.

Metrolinx refuses to provide new opening date for troubled Eglinton Crosstown project

Metrolinx is refusing to provide an update on an opening date for the long-delayed Eglinton Crosstown, citing technical issues in the testing and commissioning phase that are continuously pushing the finish date further down the road.

“We will announce an opening date once the high risk commissioning work has been completed, but not before that time. Any prediction of an the opening date in the project will just be an estimate, and I’m not comfortable giving that,” said Metrolinx CEO Phil Verster.

“When I give you a date it must be something I believe in and we’re not there yet.”

As Toronto ponders EV mandate for rideshare drivers, experts say they can’t lead the charge without chargers

As Toronto is considering a proposal to mandate that all rideshare drivers use electric vehicles — the city urgently needs to prioritize upgrading its charging infrastructure specifically in high-rise, multi-unit buildings, where many drivers live, an environmental agency and academics say.

According to Ian Klesmer, the director of strategy and grants with The Atmospheric Fund (TAF), a climate agency and non-profit funded by government endowments, their research has shown that many rideshare drivers are low-income earners or new immigrants who live in apartments that need to be upgraded with electric chargers.

Insurance companies will enjoy a bonanza of juicy rate hikes insuring buildings forced to have EV chargers installed.

That assumes we ever have the hydro infrastructure to support even that level of charger intsallation.

Recent violence on Toronto transit ‘indicative of something larger’: TTC

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) says the rash of recent violent incidents that erupted on its network over the weekend points to a bigger problem that requires an “all hands-on-deck” approach.

“These incidents that are happening on the TTC are indicative of something larger,” TTC spokesperson, Stuart Green, told CP24 Live at Noon on Monday. “There were a number of violent incidents right across this city and throughout the GTA this weekend, and we saw at least two on the TTC. So, all of these are of great concern.”

We’ve got a ways to go before we become as bad as the typical Democrat run progressive paradise city but city hall is working on it rest assured.
