UK Anti-Terror Programme Lists Reading 1984 as a Sign of “Far-Right” Extremism

Reading George Orwell’s 1984 or Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World among dozens of classic books and television shows is a sign that you could be a far-right extremist, a leaked document from a UK anti-terrorism programme reportedly claims.

A 2019 document said to have leaked from the UK’s much-criticised Prevent anti-terrorism programme has claimed that someone reading George Orwell’s 1984 or Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World should be viewed as potential warning signs of extremism, with the internal paper listing a wide range of other seminal pieces of media as being red flags indicating someone may hold radical views.

University used ChatGPT to console students after shootings

A university in Tennessee has apologised for sending students a message about a mass shooting written by a chatbot.

The office of equity, diversity and inclusion at Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College in Nashville told students: “One of the key ways to promote a culture of care on our campus is through building strong relationships with one another” — apparently intended to comfort them after three people were shot dead at Michigan State University last week.

Taliban bans contraception calling use a ‘western conspiracy’

Taliban fighters have stopped the sale of contraceptives in two of Afghanistan’s main cities, claiming their use by women is a western conspiracy to control the Muslim population.

The Guardian has learned that the Taliban has been going door to door, threatening midwives and ordering pharmacies to clear their shelves of all birth control medicines and devices.

“They came to my store twice with guns and threatened me not to keep contraceptive pills for sale. They are regularly checking every pharmacy in Kabul and we have stopped selling the products,” said one store owner in the city.

I agree with the Taliban.

Spain officials quit over trains that were too wide for tunnels

Two top Spanish transport officials have resigned over a botched order for new commuter trains that cost nearly €260m ($275m; £230m).

The trains could not fit into non-standard tunnels in the northern regions of Asturias and Cantabria.

The head of Spain’s rail operator Renfe, Isaías Táboas, and the Secretary of State for Transport, Isabel Pardo de Vera, have now left their roles.

In Canada they’d get a promotion.

Tim Hortons franchisee in P.E.I. evicts tenants to make way for temporary foreign workers

One of three people fighting eviction notices they received from the local Tim Hortons franchisee in Souris, P.E.I., says the company has no legal grounds to make tenants leave their apartment building.

D.P. Murphy Inc., which operates a number of Tim Hortons franchises across Prince Edward Island, bought the apartment building at 4 Pleasant St. in November, and issued eviction notices to the tenants on Jan. 5.

According to documents filed by the company with the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission, P.E.I.’s rentals regulator, the company plans to use the building to house temporary foreign workers.

Tim Horton’s disgusts me. They literally built the Temporary Foreign Workers program into their business plan.

YouTube Age-Restricts Catholic Disney Documentary

Last month, I stumbled across a story on CNS News about a documentary by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights called Walt’s Disenchanted Kingdom. As a member of GenX, I watched The Wonderful World of Disney when it came on every Sunday night. It was the last thing I watched before going to bed. And there were a few years in which we saved all of our money for a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando. We ate a lot of leftovers and skipped plenty of other things, but it was worth it for a few days in the Polynesian or Contemporary Resort and to wander around the Magic Kingdom. Of course, that was the ’70s, not the 2020s. And I’ve read a bio about Walt Disney and another about book about how Disney fared under Michael Eisner. So I was interested enough to spend 50 minutes watching the film.

City attempts to quell LGBTQ+ community’s concern about future plan for Hanlan’s Point

The beach at Hanlan’s Point on the Toronto Islands has served as a gathering place for the city’s LGBTQ+ community for decades, but some are worried that could soon be at risk.

A dozen people recently formed a group called Hands Off Hanlan’s to sound the alarm about the city’s master plan for the islands — a long-term planning document that’s still under development. The plan is meant to guide decisions about the future of the area, which sees close to 1.5 million visitors per year.

A dedicated space for public sex is more like it. Tell you what, you can have your space if you allow a dedicated Islamist spot right beside yours.

The splashback scandal: should all men sit down to urinate?

In German, there’s a word for one. Of course there is. In German, there’s a word for everything. But this is an especially excellent word: Sitzpinkler. You can probably guess what it means even if you don’t speak German: a Sitzpinkler is a man who sits to pee.

We have German friends: Flora, Till, their two boys. Flora confirms that the males in the house are encouraged to sit at home, as is common throughout the country. Some German bathrooms have amusing signs reminding men to sit. There’s even a device called a WC-Geist – toilet ghost – that lives under the seat and, when the seat is lifted, orders you to sit down. You can get a WC-Geist with the voice of Angela Merkel. Germany is a brilliant country.

US faces new threat from Canadian ‘super pig’

‘Incredibly intelligent, highly elusive’

For decades, wild pigs have been antagonizing flora and fauna in the US: gobbling up crops, spreading disease and even killing deer and elk.

Now, as fears over the potential of the pig impact in the US grow, North America is also facing a new swine-related threat, as a Canadian “super pig”, a giant, “incredibly intelligent, highly elusive” beast capable of surviving cold climates by tunneling under snow, is poised to infiltrate the north of the country.
