TikTok tells European users its staff in China get access to their data

TikTok is spelling out to its European users of the platform that their data can be accessed by employees outside the continent, including in China, amid political and regulatory concerns about Chinese access to user information on the site.

The Chinese-owned social video app is updating its privacy policy to confirm that staff in countries, including China, are allowed to access user data to ensure their experience of the platform is “consistent, enjoyable and safe”.

The other countries where European user data could be accessed by TikTok staff include Brazil, Canada and Israel as well as the US and Singapore, where European user data is stored currently.

The United Nations has decided that Israel needs to get rid of its nuclear weapons — if indeed it has any. But the organization has nothing to say about Iran.

In a 152-5 vote on Friday, the UN’s General Assembly voted to have Israel dispose of its nuclear weapons and place any nuclear sites within its borders under the watchful eye of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The dissenting votes were from the United States, Canada, Israel, Micronesia, and Palau. Twenty-three nations and the European Union abstained.

ATF, Enforcer of Gun Laws, Lost ‘Thousands of Firearms, Firearm Parts’ to Thieves

With inflation, prices are up pretty much across the board, but if you’re looking for a new gun for recreation or self-defense, here’s a hint: the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) is offering them at an absolute steal. Seriously, the federal agency tasked with enforcing firearms regulations has such poor security that thousands of guns and gun parts once in its possession disappeared in the hands of thieves. And it has yet to fully implement recommended reforms.

Special committee of MPs will see secret documents on firing of two Winnipeg infectious disease scientists

Justin Trudeau Xiangguo Qiu Keding Cheng – Everybody say Xi

The federal government and the three main opposition parties have agreed to set up a special committee of MPs that will have unfettered access to all national security documents related to the firing of two infectious disease scientists at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.

Government House Leader Mark Holland said Tuesday that his Conservative, Bloc Québécois and NDP counterparts have signed a memorandum of understanding that will allow MPs on an ad hoc committee to learn why Xiangguo Qiu and her husband, Keding Cheng, were dismissed in January, 2021. The committee will also see all secret documents involving the transfer of Ebola and Henipah viruses, overseen by Dr. Qiu, to China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology in March, 2019.

The View Blames GOP/Fox for Pelosi Attack, This Is ‘On Your Hands’

It’s a fact that the ladies of ABC’s The View find political violence palatable when it’s Republicans who are the targets and their lives are in danger. But on Tuesday’s show, they were trying to tie Republicans and Fox News to an attack on Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) husband Paul, claiming “this is on your hands,” falsely suggesting Republicans have not condemned the attack, and demanding people stop speaking badly about Democrats lest they get hurt.

Trudeau seeks to flood country with new goal of 500K immigrants per year … for your own good of course

The federal government is planning a massive increase in the number of immigrants entering Canada, with a goal of seeing 500,000 people arrive each year by 2025.

Immigration Minister Sean Fraser revealed the new targets Tuesday, saying the move is necessary to ensure Canada’s economic prosperity.

Canadian industries are facing a significant labour shortage, with about one million job vacancies across the country.

Who benefits?

Corporate Canada gets the depressed wages it wants.

Bank of Canada gets to fight inflation on the backs of the working class.

The rich will get richer off the contrived shortages citizens will face in everything from food to shelter.

Trudeau gets to play divide and conquer and hope a few votes come his way.

Be clear about this. Your country is being sold to corporate interests by the Trudeau government.

UK Police chief: Petty disputes being recorded as crime in ‘completely mad way’

Petty disputes are being recorded as crime in a “completely mad way” that is scaring the public, a police chief has said.

Sir David Thompson, chief constable of the West Midlands, told The Times that verbal spats between neighbours were being registered as criminal incidents in official data submitted to the government.

Police-recorded crime in England and Wales hit a new high last week with a total of 6.5 million offences in the 12 months to June 2022, up from the previous all-time high of 6.3 million in the year to March.

Continental Breakfast (Open Thread)

Is this the worst political ad ever? I’m not Jewish, but shande-wise this is embarrassing to me as a human. (I’m picturing Nancy Pelosi’s version. “Putani, eh? Dassa Italiano for Republicans. Pazzo! Imma talking anyone who vota for these stronzi…” Then Biden can get in on it with his fake Irish act, although that would take a while to record. Ilhan Omar, we could learn Somali…)

Liz Truss’s phone hack and the crisis of leadership

We live in serious times – yet our leaders are woefully inept.

During this summer’s Tory leadership contest, when the UK’s then foreign secretary, Liz Truss, was battling to become prime minister, the security services discovered that her personal mobile phone had been hacked. A year’s worth of messages – including sensitive discussions with foreign colleagues about the war in Ukraine as well as private conversations with her political allies – are believed to have been compromised. Then prime minister Boris Johnson and cabinet secretary Simon Case managed to suppress the news of the hack, until it was revealed in yesterday’s Mail on Sunday.

A year’s worth of messages between allies compromised? It makes me wonder if the speculation the US and Britain teamed up to destroy the Nordstream pipelines is true and has been exposed by the Truss hack.

UK: Don’t sleep around, servicewomen told

Women in the armed forces have been threatened with disciplinary action and told to stop “sleeping around” after they reported sexual abuse, The Times has been told.

The claims emerged as new analysis showed that only one in ten rape cases brought to MoD trial results in a conviction. Campaigners want an overhaul of the military justice system after a Times investigation found the conviction rate for rape cases heard at court martial was only a seventh of that in the civilian courts.

Actress Elizabeth Banks on NPR: Abortion Is ‘Our Society’s Insurance Policy’ for Easy Sex

For your daily laugh that NPR calls their evening newscast All Things Considered, on Saturday night they celebrated the new pro-abortion movie Call Jane with actress Elizabeth Banks. Over eight and a half minutes, NPR host Michel Martin had no difficult or challenging questions, just facilitations.

Martin asked “How did this project come about and what attracted you to it?” And: “Do you have somebody in mind that you hope will see this film? And what are you hoping people will take away from it?”
