Colby Cosh: Grade inflation kneecapped Ontario students looking to go on to higher education

TDSB student protest poster. No I’m not kidding.

I know I shouldn’t feel spasms of Alberta smugness about the chaotic state of Ontario higher-education admissions, explained superbly for CBC News by Mike Crawley. This was a tragedy, although one exacerbated by the pandemic, that you could see coming a quarter-century ago. “Before the COVID-19 pandemic,” Crawley writes, “the grades of Ontario high school students had increased gradually but steadily for years.” An education prof is on hand in the story to say that this could simply have been due to the ever-intensifying brilliance of Ontario students. And who would doubt it?

GUNTER: Governor General flies high on our dollars

Indian name means “Put it on the tab”

Governor General Mary Simon doesn’t seem to give a damn about taxpayers’ dollars. Since becoming the King’s representative in Canada nearly two years ago, Simon has run up several staggering bills for which ordinary Canadians have had to pay.

Last time she was discussing “World Peace” this time she was saving the world from “Global warming.” You need a lot of luxury to accomplish that stuff.

The West’s child exploitation scandal: groomers and abusers

Wall of Transgender Heroines

One Nation is referring the Classification Board to a Senate inquiry regarding the creep of inappropriate content that has made its way into the hands and onto the screens of children.

Recent decisions to approve soft-porn and sexually explicit content for kids is being justified via the glitter of ‘rainbow politics’. It follows a new social ideology that says children must be exposed to queer adult sexual behaviours – including kink – and those who oppose risk being labelled as hate-fuelled bigots.

“The images of a little girl and her grandmother attacked in broad daylight in Bordeaux are unbearable,” Marine Le Pen said. “How many videos like this does it take for the power to react?”

Time to Get Rid of Federal ‘Disinformation’ Bureaus

Recently, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines announced the creation of a new office within the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI): The Foreign Malign Influence Center (FMIC). It would encompass “election threat work, essentially looking at foreign influence and interference in elections, but it also deals with disinformation more generally.” Legislation creating the center was passed by Congress and signed into law in 2022.

Although its work nominally deals with disinformation targeting U.S. elections and public opinion within the United States, there are at least two questions that need to be asked: First, is this office essential or duplicative of other ongoing efforts? Second, is this even appropriate work in which the federal government should be engaged?

Musk: ‘Cisgender’ and ‘Cis’ Are Now Considered Slurs on Twitter

If you’ve ever engaged with a proponent of radical leftist ideology, you’ve probably experienced having your opinions dismissed because you’re a “cisgendered” person. It’s an awful lot like how, once upon a time, men’s opinions on abortion were summarily dismissed by the pro-abortion crowd because “men can’t get pregnant.”

New emails show COVID vaccine mandates were based on a lie

It is not uncommon for politicians or bureaucrats to lie. What seems to be unique, though, is just how common and consequential the lies were during the COVID pandemic.

On Monday, we got a bombshell. New documents indicate the entire justification for vaccine mandates was based on a falsehood — and that public health officials knew it.

Canada getting no ‘tangible benefit’ from membership in Asian infrastructure bank: former executive

A Canadian former executive at the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is criticizing Canada’s membership in the institution, saying it’s inconsistent with Canadian values.

“I didn’t find a single, tangible benefit to communicate back home here to Canada of what this bank does that is consistent with our values in a way that would benefit Canadians,” Bob Pickard, who resigned from the AIIB last week, told Power & Politics host David Cochrane in an interview Monday.

Smells like another China Class Grift.

Claim: Ukrainians May Pause Counter Offensive After Lack of Meaningful Gains

Ukrainian forces launched their long-expected counter-offensive against Russia earlier this month, with German-made Leopard II main battle tanks, many of which have already been lost, taking part in the operations against Russian forces, but so far, territorial gains have been few in number.

The U.S.-based think tank the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) stated this week that while Ukraine was conducting offensive operations in at least four sectors of the frontline, they have made “limited territorial gains.”

‘What the heck is going on?’: Poilievre’s strategy gets hard look after uninspiring byelections

OTTAWA — Former Conservative national campaign director Fred DeLorey said his phone was “blowing up” in the hours following the results in Monday’s byelections. He said he was hearing from members of the Conservative caucus, party staff and party presidents from around the country wondering “what the heck is going on?”

I wonder how much manpower, effort and money was devoted by the parties in each of the 4 races?

Nothing changed as all were safe ridings.

German tabloid Bild to replace range of editorial jobs with AI

Germany’s Bild tabloid, the biggest-selling newspaper in Europe, plans to replace a range of editorial jobs with artificial intelligence as part of a €100m costcutting programme, it has told staff in an email.

The paper is also reorganising its regional newspaper business in a move expected to lead to hundreds of redundancies.

The newspaper would “unfortunately be parting ways with colleagues who have tasks that in the digital world are performed by AI and/or automated processes”, its owner, Europe’s largest media publisher, Axel Springer SE, said in an email to staff.

In Canada, Asking for Evidence Now Counts as ‘Denialism’

Sensational 2021 claims that unmarked Indigenous child graves had been discovered in British Columbia now seem doubtful. But saying so may soon be a criminal offence

It’s now been more than two years since Canada was convulsed by claims that 215 unmarked graves of Indigenous schoolchildren had been discovered on the grounds of a former residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. No actual bodies or human remains were in evidence—just ground-penetrating radar data indicating regularly-spaced soil dislocations. But you wouldn’t have known that from the breathless manner in which the story was reported at the time. A Global News headline announced the “Discovery of Human Remains at Kamloops Residential School Grounds.” Another, at the Toronto Star, declared, “The Remains of 215 Children Have Been Found.”
