Torstar owners ‘deadlocked’ in feud over direction of company including Toronto Star

NordStar Capital Inc. co-owner Paul Rivett is seeking a court order to wind up the company after a breakdown in his relationship with business partner Jordan Bitove, raising uncertainty about the control of Torstar Corp. and the Toronto Star newspaper.

Mr. Rivett detailed the significant rift with his partner in an application filed with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice on September 1, alleging Mr. Bitove thwarted business plans they had agreed to, ignored proper corporate governance, and attempted to sideline him. “There is complete deadlock between Rivett and Bitove,” the application states. “They can no longer work together.”

John Podesta: Biden’s New Green Investment Czar

In the Biden administration’s uncanny ability to put the wrong people in the wrong jobs, naming John Podesta to be the new “climate czar” might be its masterstroke.

The White House announced recently that John Podesta will oversee $370 billion in clean energy investments included in the Inflation Reduction Act. This makes him the decision-maker for handing out money to make green energy a viable, cost-effective replacement for fossil fuels. Green energy subsidies and other government giveaways have been tried before, and failed, but not at this scale. With so much money at stake, you might have expected the administration to choose someone with a strong background in energy technologies or perhaps someone possessing deep experience in the energy business who can spot the good (and bad) uses for all that money.

Trudeau is about to raise taxes three times but hopes you won’t notice

When is a tax not a tax? When it’s a Liberal raising the tax, apparently.

For the past two weeks, newly minted Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has been asking the Trudeau Liberal government to halt planned tax hikes due to the rising cost of living. The government has not only refused, they’ve at times denied that raising premiums on employment insurance or the Canada Pension Plan amounts to a tax hike.

Apotex, Barry Sherman’s ‘fifth child,’ sold to American buyer as police continue to probe his murder

He was “butterball” to one teacher at Forest Hill Collegiate. Another called him “sluggish.” But Bernard “Barry” Sherman’s brain was alive with schemes and ideas that would eventually take him to the heights of the Canadian business and philanthropy scene.

“I like to make money and give it away,” Sherman would say when people asked what got him out of bed in the morning. In his life, Sherman did both, becoming a billionaire and giving enormous gifts to Jewish and non-Jewish causes.

Postcard from Paris …

Pierre Lellouche: “40% of children aged 0 to 4 are immigrants or of immigrant origin. We have a profound change in the population of this country with a decisive weight of Islam, since most of this immigration comes from the Maghreb

France: according to a survey, almost a third of women of childbearing age do not want children

Among the respondents who do not feel a desire for motherhood, 50% believe that a child is not essential to their personal development when 48% do not wish to assume parental responsibility. The environmental and climate crisis also motivates the non-desire for children of 39% of the women questioned, followed by political and social crises (37%) and the fear of overpopulation (35%), details Elle.

30 ex-FBI agents stand up to support whistleblower who exposed agency’s political bias

Thirty former FBI agents, including a retired deputy assistant director, head of counterterrorism and five SWAT team members, have spoken out publicly in support of suspended FBI whistleblower Stephen Friend.

Their heartfelt messages, obtained exclusively by The Post, show a deep and widespread anguish about the politicization of the FBI.

“It’s time to stop the FBI from being the enforcer of a political party’s ideology,” says Ernie Tibaldi, a retired agent from San Francisco. “We need to reestablish the FBI as the apolitical and independent law enforcement entity that it always was.”

Anti-western sentiment pervades Czech protests

Yesterday afternoon, tens of thousands of Czechs gathered in Prague calling for the resignation of the government and a “180-degree turn” in the country’s foreign policy.

… Like last time, this protest will almost certainly be portrayed by the media as overtly “pro-Russian”. But the reality is more complex — and perhaps even more troubling for the West.

… Indeed, for the first hour or so Ukraine was hardly mentioned. Speakers mostly focused on the cost-of-living crisis, with one listing price increases for potatoes, eggs and other everyday items. Nonetheless, the war was ever present through a group of pro-Ukraine counter-demonstrators standing at the top of the square.

And if there was one overriding concern, it was not support for Russia, but loathing for the western international order. Many flags and placards called for exit from the EU and NATO; others included calls to “stop censorship” and “stop green poverty.” One attendee said the goal is for the Czech Republic “to leave NATO and stop serving American interests.”

Not Pro-Russian but anti-western order. I wonder how closely aligned the man on the street in Prague is with the man on the street in Berlin etc. Nothing in Canada’s MSM about this.

From the NYT – Protests in Prague Signal a Troubled Winter Ahead in Europe

Tens of thousands gathered in the Czech capital for the second such protest in a month, spurred by an energy crisis and rising prices that are affecting countries across Europe.

PRAGUE — Thousands of protesters flocked into Prague’s Wenceslas Square on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of the government of the Czech Republic as an energy crisis stoked popular unrest that will be closely watched in other European capitals.

Despite a rain-soaked start, demonstrators hoisting Czech flags and chanting, “Shame! Shame!” turned out for the second time in a month to rally under the slogan “Czech Republic First.” They were a hodgepodge of figures with a broad range of causes, including Kremlin sympathizers and those who said they are fighting a “global elite.”

Saskatchewan Joins Alberta in Opposing Ottawa’s Gun Buyback Program

The Saskatchewan government has told the RCMP that it will not financially aid Ottawa in its efforts within the province to implement a federal firearms buyback program.

Christine Tell, the province’s minister of corrections, policing, and public safety, wrote a letter to RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore saying that no government money committed to the RCMP would be used to seize and buy back the firearms of Saskatchewan residents, according to the province’s Chief Firearms Officer Robert Freberg.
