Disney just released the trailer for its newest live-action remake, “The Little Mermaid,” and reactions have been strong from the get-go. Like with other projects, detractors are being told it’s racist to dislike this new version.

The studio chose Halle Bailey to portray the finned princess. Because the actress is black, many are already saying any criticism must be racially motivated. However, early critics have plenty of complaints about the movie that have nothing to do with Ariel’s skin color.

Saudi Arabia: man arrested after Mecca pilgrimage for Queen

Saudi authorities have arrested a man who claimed to have travelled to the Muslim holy city of Mecca to perform an umrah pilgrimage on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.

The man, a Yemeni national, published a video clip of himself on social media on Monday at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, where non-Muslims are forbidden.

In the clip, he held up a banner saying: “Umrah for the soul of Queen Elizabeth II, we ask God to accept her in heaven and among the righteous.”

Russian state TV utters the unspeakable: ‘Ukraine cannot be defeated’

Western-leaning politician allowed to voice rare criticism in what may be ploy to prepare the Russian people for possibility of peace talks

A war commentator invited on to Russian state television told viewers that Vladimir Putin has been misled by advisers and said Ukraine cannot be defeated, in what appeared to be a rare example of sanctioned criticism.

Boris Nadezhdin, a Western-leaning politician appearing for the first time in months, called for peace talks as he made a surprise appearance on state-controlled NTV over the weekend.

Mr Nadezhdin, who for years played the token liberal on state television, said: “We’re not at the point where we have to understand – it’s absolutely impossible to defeat Ukraine, using the resources and colonial war methods that Russia is using to win this war.

Germany: Activists protest on-going purchase of Russian uranium

Environmental activists on Monday protested in front of a fuel element factory in Germany where a Russian uranium shipment was set to arrive.

The Russian ship Mikhail Dudin was expected to arrive at the Rotterdam port Sunday evening, and the uranium was to be transported by truck on Monday to a plant in Lingen, near the German-Dutch border.

Protesters demanded an “immediate stop to nuclear deals with Russia,” according to a statement published by a citizen initiative.

Have these guys signed a non-aggression pact we’re not aware of?

The Conservative ‘populist’ targeting Trudeau

Canada’s new Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has vowed to “fight tooth and nail” for Canadians as he sets his sights on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government.

“Canadians are hurting, and it is our job to transform that hurt into hope,” Mr Poilievre said in his first address to his party caucus on Monday.

Mr Poilievre was elected leader of the Conservative party on Saturday after winning it in a landslide first-ballot victory with nearly 70% of the vote from party members.

Commentators have said the leader of the right-wing party will usher in a new era of populist politics in Canada.

Twitter misleading the public, whistleblower says

Twitter’s former head of security, Peiter Zatko, has told US lawmakers the firm is “misleading the public” about how secure the platform really is.

He claimed Twitter was “a decade behind” security standards, that users’ data is not sufficiently protected and that too many staff have access to it.

Mr Zatko was giving evidence following an 84-page long whistleblowing complaint he made about security practices inside the social network.

He was fired by the firm in January.

Inflation likely much higher than Statscan says

Now more than ever, Statscan needs to re-examine how it measures inflation

… A new paper from MEI director of research Valentin Petkantchin and senior economist Nathalie Elgrably-Lévy argues that the year-over-year change in the consumer price index, or CPI – the figure we commonly call the inflation rate, which sat at 7.6 per cent in July – has routinely understated the pace of consumer inflation this year.

They calculated that based on a more timely “speedometer” for prices, the annualized inflation pace exceeded 10 per cent from March through June, topping out at a massive 12.5 per cent in May – nearly five percentage points higher than the official inflation rate reported by Statistics Canada that month.

Shame on me for suggesting a politicized public service would finagle the numbers to help Trudeau!

Most Canadians indifferent to British monarchy, untouched by Queen’s death … says online survey

OTTAWA – A new poll suggests that while many Canadians plan to watch Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral next week, the vast majority have not been personally impacted by her passing and feel no attachment to the monarchy.

The poll from Leger and the Association of Canadian Studies also found that while some Canadians are happy about King Charles III taking the throne and others are not, most are largely indifferent to Canada’s new head of state.

The results, which are based on an online survey of 1,565 Canadians polled between Sept. 9 and 11, are among the first to assess how Canadians feel about the monarchy since the 96-year-old Queen died last week.
