England must reduce meat intake to avoid climate breakdown, says food tsar
The only way to have sustainable land use in this country, and avoid ecological breakdown, is to vastly reduce consumption of meat and dairy, according to the UK government’s food tsar.
Henry Dimbleby told the Guardian that although asking the public to eat less meat – supported by a mix of incentives and penalties – would be politically toxic, it was the only way to meet the country’s climate and biodiversity targets.
“It’s an incredibly inefficient use of land to grow crops, feed them to a ruminant or pig or chicken which then over its lifecycle converts them into a very small amount of protein for us to eat,” he said.

Committee set to hear testimony on alleged political interference in N.S. mass shooting
OTTAWA – The House of Commons Public Safety and National Security Committee is set to meet today to discuss allegations of political interference in the 2020 mass shooting in Nova Scotia.
Seven people are slated to appear before the committee on Tuesday, including Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General of Canada François Daigle, Nova Scotia RCMP Chief Supt. and lead investigator Darren Campbell, and Lia Scanlan, a strategic communications director.

The shooting death of a cinematographer by actor Alec Baldwin on the set of “Rust” last year was an accident, New Mexico’s Office of Medical Investigator determined.
The medical investigator’s report, which was completed following an autopsy and a review of police reports, was made public Monday by the Santé Fe County Sheriff’s Office.

Gasoline got cheaper last month, but grocery prices continued to climb
Canada’s inflation rate fell to 7.6 per cent in July, according to a report Tuesday from Statistics Canada, marking the first time in 12 months that the rate has decreased from the previous month.
In June, inflation hit a 39-year high of 8.1 per cent, with gasoline prices the single biggest contributor to the overall rate increase.
By contrast, gasoline prices declined on a monthly basis in July, according to the agency’s Consumer Price Index. Consumers paid 9.2 per cent less for gasoline in July than they did in June, a monthly decline not seen since April 2020.
DOJ opposes release of Trump warrant affidavit
The Department of Justice is opposing the release of the underlying affidavit justifying its unprecedented raid of Mar-a-Lago, just days after it agreed to unseal the warrant approving the FBI search of former President Donald Trump’s Florida resort.
“There remain compelling reasons, including to protect the integrity of an ongoing law enforcement investigation that implicates national security, that support keeping the affidavit sealed,” DOJ lawyers declared on Monday, also indicating, however, that they would be open to releasing redacted portions of other related documents.
Of course they do – there’s no probable cause. There’s no whistleblower.
Over 60,000 People Sign Petition To End Canada’s Telecom Oligopoly
Canadians are calling on the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to end the domination of Rogers Communications Inc. (TSX: RCI.B), BCE Inc (TSX: BCE) and Telus Corporation (TSX: T) over the country’s telecommunications industry.
The campaign, in the form of a Change.org petition started by Nicole Goodmurphy-McCallum, has gathered over 60,300 signatures so far.
This was triggered by a series of recent events that stress the glaring need for telecom competition in the country: first was the proposed merger between Rogers and Shaw Communications (TSX: SJR.B), exacerbated by the massive, 19-hour Canada-wide Rogers outage last month, and then most recently, Telus’ request to charge a 1.5% credit card processing fee on all customer bill payments.

Toronto council approves creation of over 600 refugee shelter spaces at North York hotel
Toronto city council approved on Monday the creation of more than 600 new emergency shelter spaces for refugees and refugee claimants.
In a news release, the City said council approved a recommendation by City staff to execute an agreement with the hotel located at 3 Park Home Ave. in North York.
The statement noted that refugee occupancy in the shelter system has been “steadily increasing” since September of last year, largely due to the border reopening and easing of travel restrictions.

Spike in FBI threats unsettles the right
An uptick in threats to the FBI after it executed a search warrant at former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate is unsettling the political right, with some calling on allies of the former president to tone down their rhetoric.
