UN Will Justify a Mirror Image of Putin’s War

The United Nations Human Rights Council’s Permanent Commission of Inquiry into Israel, due to make its initial report on June 13, has a mendacious mandate worthy of Vladimir Putin himself. Putin went to war to turn into reality his much repeated insistence that Ukraine is an illegitimate state that has no right to exist and is inseparable from the rest of Russia. Similarly, the UN mandate allows it to question the very existence of the State of Israel. Unlike all other UN inquiries, this one has no historic time limit and enables the commission to range right back to the foundation of the state. The commissioners won’t be bold enough to explicitly declare that Israel has no right to exist, but you can be certain that will be the subtext running throughout its report.

‘Five people presumed dead after military aircraft carrying nuclear material’ crashes in California

A military aircraft carrying nuclear material has crashed in California, leaving officials to believe all five passengers are dead.

The plane crashed in Imperial County near Highway 78 and the town of Glamis – 30 miles north of the Mexican border, and 150 miles east of San Diego.

The crash was confirmed by Naval Air Facility El Centro, 30 miles from the crash site.

Fighting alongside pro-Russia separatists as part of Moscow’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine wasn’t mentioned in the brochures of Luhansk University when Jean Claude Sangwa, a 27-year-old student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, moved to the breakaway region last year to study economics.

But when the head of the Kremlin-controlled, self-declared Luhansk People’s Republic announced a full military mobilisation of the region on 19 February, Sangwa, together with two friends and fellow students from DRC and Central African Republic, decided to join the local militia and take up arms against Ukraine.

“I joined because the war came to our republic. What should I have done? I am a man and have to fight,” Sangwa said in broken Russian. “The whole world is fighting against Russia,” he added when asked why he had decided to join the militia.

Allison Fluke-Ekren, also known by the alias Umm Mohammed al-Amrik, was originally detained and charged by the FBI in January, and has pleaded guilty to one count of aiding ISIS and confessed to training over 100 women and girls. Uvalde mass shooting: Wounded teacher condemns police as cowards

A teacher wounded in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, has criticised police as “cowards” for delaying taking action while his pupils were killed.

In a harrowing interview with ABC News he said he told his students to pretend to be asleep during the shooting.

Eleven of them died when the gunman stalked his and an adjacent classroom for over an hour as police stood in the hall.

“You had a bulletproof vest. I had nothing,” he said of the police.

The shooting claimed the lives of 21 people, including 19 young children.

Pro-Russia officials open trial against Britons captured fighting in Ukraine

Russian proxy fighters in east Ukraine have said they are opening a trial against two Britons, Aiden Aslin and Shaun Pinner, who were captured fighting alongside Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol.

The two men, who are serving in the Ukrainian military, and Ibrahim Saadun, a captive from Morocco, were shown sitting in a courtroom cage reserved for defendants in a video released on pro-Russian social media channels on Tuesday.

Prosecutors from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, a proxy government in east Ukraine controlled by Russia, have said that the men face the death penalty for “terrorism” and for fighting as “mercenaries” against the Russian invasion.
